Just to clarify, they start dealing with petitions after May 15th, right? Or is it before then? A site change would definitely shake up my decision process...

Edit: also, do applicants to the UMed program who were assigned to a non-Chicago track have less of a chance of getting into the UMed program? Do they get looked at for interviews only after those who got assigned to the Chicago track?

Wrt the first point, I'm not sure. I sent my letter around that time anyway since that was when I got in. I remember getting a response in late May.

No idea about how UMed works.

Gotcha, well thanks for the response 🙂

Per chance the flight to Chicago gets cancelled due to bad weather, would UIC let you reschedule? When I talked to the admissions staff on the phone to confirm my interview date, she was clear that I wouldn't be able to change the date once decided.

for the committee meeting, is it every third thurs or last thurs of the month? which is it?

Third Thursday usually

Hey guys, I really liked UIC. I interviewed for the MD-PhD program and was recently selected to be in the running for MD as well (no need to interview as my MD-PhD interview sufficed). I heard that once you have an MD-PhD interview you've got a pretty good chance at the MD acceptance, they don't guarantee it but they do tell you that if you're not accepted to the MD-PhD program you will be highly considered for the MD if the program submits your name to the MD program, which they did for me. I know nothing is for sure, etc., but I am a little concerned that if accepted into the MD-only program I would not be able to attend due to the ridiculous high tuition for OOS students.

Anybody here already an M1/2/3/4 at UIC from OOS that would like to comment on this? Just trying to narrow the choices, I might just withdraw from the MD application due to the tuition. Are they likely to give scholarships to OOS students? How have you been able to handle this astronomical tuition? If you had another choice of schools in the Chicago area would you have gone due to the lower tuition (ex: Loyola/Rush/etc.)?

I'd appreciate any info. Thanks in advance 🙂

Anyone know how the fin aid process goes here? I've submitted my fafsa, but I'm not sure if we should do anything else right now.

should I fill out my Fafsa now? I didn't know how early we could start submitting that and if we did it early, would our chances of receiving more aid increase? ...now time to start freaking out about the cost 😱

Got my assignment today. Put down Chicago as my preference and did not get it. So apparently it's full right now 🙁.
Going to make my decision easy if I can't be switched over to Chicago...

How long did it take to get your assignment after sending in your card?

I live a 10 minute walk away from the school so I walked it over when I got my packet in the mail, which was January 31st. So took about 1 1/2 weeks.

Just got UPR track...not my choice, anyone know where to find info on petitioning?

so it appears that the Chicago track is closed...with the potential of a few spots to be open....is anyone going to petition or know about the process of...I'm going to call today and inquire about it but it sucks that these decisions aren't made until after May 15th :-(

Thanks for sharing, do you know about how long you were applicant in progress the 2nd time by any chance?
What is the difference between "Applicant in Progress" and "Applicant in Process?"

Thank you 🙂

I wish I knew!! It seems like Applicant in Process means you're actually in review vs. progress your application is either not been reviewed yet or completed the first review but that is PURELY speculation based on what I've seen.

TODAY is the day that I finally switched from applicant in progress --> applicant in process after being "progress" for > 2 months.

What'd you hear from calling today?

After reading through this thread I was certain that I would get assigned to the UPR track but somehow got Chicago. Happy about that but now to find a place to live/a roommate...

Congrats! Must have been a few spots open

Congrats! I haven't got my assignment yet but this still gives me hope that I'll land Chicago!

I called and the lady at admissions said Chicago is booked full...then proceeded to explain the petition process...ugh so frustrating 🙁
Yea definitely frustrating. What is the process if you wouldn't mind sharing. I was going to talk to them today as well.

So she said we have to write a letter and email it to the admissions committee ([email protected]) . In the letter include why you want to be re-located. It is NOT based on first come first serve bc all petitions are look at after May 15. I asked about the success rate to get re-placed in Chicago and she says it varies year to year. I have read a few threads from 2008 that suggested those from Chicago may get a little more priority then out of state kids... My fiance just took a job in Chicago so being assigned UPR was quite devastating

Yea I can see how that would be really tough. Hopefully it works out for you so that you can be with your fiancee, would be a lot nicer🙂.
I'm in a similar boat as all my family lives close, I currently live (for a cheap price) with my brother who goes to UIC dental, and I do research with a UIC Physician here. So I would not be able to continue the research that I have put so much time into if I do not get Chicago.
Really tough overall.

I interviewed on 2/5/13 any insight on when I should receive a decision?

The committee often meets on the third Thursday of every month. The decision will most likely be made by the end of February. I interviewed on 1/18 and the decision was made on 1/25.

Are there any curriculum differences between the Chicago and other tracks?

I switched as well the same day you did! I am now "applicant in process" after being "applicant in progress." Weird. Maybe one day we'll know the actual difference ;-)

I have an interview this week and was wondering what would be the best way to Get to ohare airport after my interview. Are there any shuttle/public transportation options or are there taxis near the school I could take. Thanks

The blue line goes directly to O'Hare. A cab would be faster, but muuuuch more expensive, so it all depends on how much time and money you're willing to spend 😳

How long after your interview is your pflight? I had a 6:30 flight..took the blue line and barely made it. I think a taxi might actually take you longer..there was bumper to bumper traffic. When you get to your interview ask gary about getting to the airport he was very helpful!

My flight is at 815 so I think I'll have enough time. Seems like I'll be taking the blue line.

Taxi to ohare is a bad move that time of day. Kennedy is terrible

Does anyone have difficulties logging in the admissions website? I cannot log in as of now.

I hope so! I wonder how long it will take for the next status change =/ I'm starting to lose hope for an II here which is super sad.

Don't lose hope. My best friend didn't get an II until early March and was later accepted.

M1 in GMED now... it is specific to the Chicago campus only.

I mean the application status website.

I actually did earlier. Said something about regular maintenance on Tuesdays and Thursdays but then I thought to myself, "wait it's Friday..." Haha. But I was too lazy to try to login again.

Wondering why there is a difference in the style of interview among three campuses?

From the looks of it, Peoria and Rockford will have less burden on the interviewee because they are only 30 min long versus a whopping 1hr and half at Chicago campus..

What are the consensus here? Which campus is the best to get the interview with?

There is a difference between campuses. Peoria is one student interview and one professional interview (2 professors, doctors or administrations - or a mix).

Not sure which is which, but for the others, one is a panel interview and the other has three separate interviews.

At the end of the day, it really depends on preference. I personally liked the Peoria approach - a chance to redeem yourself, yet not too long of a day repeating yourself.

I interviewed at Rockford and it was panel style. There were about 15-20 people in the room and they rebounded off each other to ask me questions. That being said, I interviewed for the RMED program so I don't know if the atmosphere of my interview was different than a regular student interview.
