FYI, I spoke with the admissions office, and she said we are all still being considered for scholarships. Some should be awarded by the end of the month, and some can be awarded by the end of April. Definitely in time for the May 15th deadline, but the award letter we received today is not final.

Thanks for sharing. That's good to know.

But certainly it can't be all that bad. You have acceptances at so many schools, this just helps you narrow down your choices.🙂

haha! But I can easily be bought though, so just need to see where all the chips fall when its all said and done.

Right, just when we think it's over it still aint over. I still don't know where I'm going *sigh* to matriculate that is.

Unfortunately the state of illinois is really broke and cutting higher education funding. This may make COA worse as you go.

BTW, just to be clear, all we had to do for fin aid was fill out the FAFSA, right?

I wish I was in that position 😉

I feel ya fellow SDner. I was stuck in that same position (waiting on decisions), so I'm rooting for you! Noticed you in the CMS thread also. Seems like you had a really positive experience there. Good luck to all!

BTW, got assigned to UPR-Rockford. No surprise there but really bummed. Now off to petition. I'm just curious how MANY chicago tracks will be available once May 16th hits.

I just sent in my site preference card. Has anyone gotten into the Chicago campus lately? How soon after they receive it do they assign your campus?

I think it's been more than a month since someone posted matching to Chicago. It's been mostly UPR. Quick turn around on the cards. Usually in 7-10 days you have your response.

I was recently assigned to Chicago. I interviewed in mid February and accepted 2-3 weeks after. I am OOS.

Has anyone heard some first-hand experience of what the GMED program actually is? I have a feeling it's just extra work with little benefits. Do you get any credentials out of it or cool internship possibilites?

Wow. Did you do anything out of the ordinary?

Anyhow, is there anything special that we need to do to petition for a new site? I emailed Dean Azar my reasons for staying in Chicago.

You should try to search the thread. Someone mentioned the address to send the petition to at some pt awhile back.

Aside from being simply amazing? No I haven't done anything special 😉.

I'm guessing they are just trying to create a diverse class at each campus and I fit the profile of the type of applicant they needed to fill.

Yeah, I wish we knew what factors go into the campus assignments.

what does this mean: "A final decision was made on your application on . Please allow two-weeks to receive the correspondence in the mail. If you do not receive this correspondence in two-weeks, please contact the Admissions Office. No decision will be given over the telephone."

No date was on there. Also I haven't interviewed. I'm assuming it's a rejection. Safe to say so?

Yup 🙁

Thanks. I searched the thread n gave up halfway bc it took too long. Thought it was as simple as sending the dean an email so I'm glad I asked.

There is a "Search this thread" option right next to the "Thread Tools". No need to read the whole thread 🙂

So she said we have to write a letter and email it to the admissions committee ([email protected]) . In the letter include why you want to be re-located. It is NOT based on first come first serve bc all petitions are look at after May 15. I asked about the success rate to get re-placed in Chicago and she says it varies year to year. I have read a few threads from 2008 that suggested those from Chicago may get a little more priority then out of state kids... My fiance just took a job in Chicago so being assigned UPR was quite devastating

^^^^

I'm an M1 at UIC Chicago. There were a number of people who switched into the Chicago campus between this time last year and the start of school in August. When petitioning, I would recommend that you tell them why you'd like to be in Chicago. How will it improve your medical education? What's in Chicago that isn't elsewhere? Interested in urban medicine? Do you have connections to the city? Etc.

It's also useful to know that from anecdotal evidence, the Chicago campus' first year seems more difficult.

I was looking at last years "required materials" list, and I wanted to find out which of these are actually used. I'm contemplating spending like 400 dollars on a tablet as opposed to something like 800 dollars in books if I can "acquire" the PDF's. Can any current medical student tell me what is relevant?

http://chicago.medicine.uic.edu/dep...t_students/m1_required_textbooks___materials/
The books you will buy will end up being very different from the list they publish. The College publishes the official text books, which tend to be too dense for what we are required to know. When you start in August, our class will provide you with a list of recommendations and you can choose from those depending on your learning style.

Generally speaking my classmates in the GMED program have enjoyed their experience. Like anything it's all about interacting with likeminded people - you end up exposed to faculty and classmates with similar interestes. It's also a way to make the med school experience feel more personalized while in a class of 180 students.

Anyone else interviewing tomorrow?

I am interviewing tomorrow. I applied in November turned in my secondary december and received an interview late january. So I'm hoping my chances of getting in aren't less bc its late in the cycle and if I do get in I hope I can stay in Chicago (I'm a local). Do you know how soon we would hear back after the interview tomorrow?

From what I read on this thread, the committee meets on the 3rd thursday of every month, so you may get your decision back by the end of this week.

You A.M interviewees message me so I could Facebook you guys. Great to meet all of you 🙂

But then how do they interview people who are on the other tracks but are applying to Umed and Gmed?

I'm not sure about the Umed program, but the Gmed program is ONLY available at the Chicago campus. You can't do it if you are UPR. I was assigned to Rockford, and I still submitted a GMED application. They told me that in the past, they've been able to get students reassigned to the Chicago campus if they are accepted into GMED.

Umed is available only in Chicago.

Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about them doing that. UMED I understand, but GMED doesn't seem as necessary. With this, though, GMED is now going to flood with applicants who would prefer to actually be in Chicago over actually doing the program, which is how I assume Umed is already like.

That's probably why they interview though... So they can pick who they want and sort through those people who are only faking interest or whatever.

hah, yeaaaah.....

God blessed people with silver tongues to get what they want regardless of motive.....

I can be kind of cynical from time to time...

I agree with you there will probably be quite a few people who do this. It's weird though... have you guys been getting all the emails about GMED, how they extended the application deadline, had an information session on Monday and basically put out a call for more applications. It kind of made it seem like they hadn't gotten the number or caliber of applications they wanted. I don't know what that means. but I'm sure they're going to get a bunch more applications now.

And as far as I know, they haven't sent out any invitations for GMED interviews yet. At least I haven't heard of any yet.

Adcom meeting this thursday? It is a third thursday!

I haven't seen anyone go from this holding pattern no decision e-mails to accepted yet.

Hi all, I'll be declining my acceptance to UIC. Liked the program, but I got into my #1 choice last week. Hopefully this opens up a spot for one of you guys. I'm OOS btw.

Garie mentioned on Monday that he wasn't sure if the 3/18 crowd would be included on today's meeting agenda but I'm still listed as "evaluation not complete" so I'm assuming we'll need to wait until the April meeting.

Withdrew today. Really liked this school during my interview, but COA and changes to my significant others ability to move across the country with me pushed my decision. Best of luck to everyone; especially all of the people in the no final decision purgatory.

After obsessively searching this thread.. this is most likely an acceptance? Don't want to get too excited just yet!

There was a guy a page or two back that had that and a rejections. Just a warning.

ooo that's unfortunate! guess I got to wait for some mail. thanks sodium 🙂

Sigh.... *still* pending, entering month number 5 of no decision.
