I really have no interest in discouraging you. I'm just trying to shed light on possible explanations for the age demographic trend at UNMC. From my experience, doctors who have had to work just to eat at some point 1) complain less about long hours and 2) are not as big of douche bags. It sounded like some at UNMC came to the same conclusion.

That's totally understandable; I didn't think you were trying to discourage. I feel that tends to be true actually. Unfortunately, I'm not the large portion that act that way. Hopefully they see past my age, but it appears they have already made a stereotype. I guess I'll find out in December! haha

I'm sure that 42 MCAT and 4.0/triple major while saving baby seals demonstrates your dedication and good will. 😛 👍

On another note, does anyone know if UNMC has a ping pong table? This could be crucial...

You and I are going to get along fantastically if we end up at the same school, but the medical building does NOT have one (yes, that was among the first questions I asked). We can change that if we end up here.

Boom. I have raised funds for a table at a previous institution of study, and I'm prepared to do it again. It's truly the ideal study break activity.

Just found this site, got the acceptance letter earlier this month through EDP. I saw this statistic over the summer and I legitimately think something is wrong with it. I sent in my application when I was still 20yo (sent to AMCAS in June, birthday in July), interviewed at 21yo, will be starting classes when I'm a 22yo and a month. My scores are competitive, but not anywhere near good enough to get in based off that alone. In fact I know a couple of others who started M1 at UNMC this year at 22yo or younger, and some others who I have heard got accepted through EDP this year have to fit in that 20-22 age group. This leads me to believe that there is something weird with how they're calculating and coming to this statistic. Hope this eases your concerns.

Yes, this helps me out a lot and thank you for the reply! I thought it would be really odd if they only had one or so students that fell into the 20-22 category. I was almost convinced that they did indeed select for older applicants. I feel a lot better now haha so thanks again. Congrats on the acceptance. Hopefully I'll get the same good news in December 🙂

I also had a question about doing EDP. How was your experience with it and would you recommend it to others? I know that you may have a bias because the risk ended up being worth it for you, but I was hoping to get your take on it. If I have to reapply next year, I didn't know if it would be beneficial to do EDP.

I'm not sure. I just did it because unmc was by far and away my first choice. But I didn't like that if I didn't get in, I would have been so far behind with my secondaries to other schools.

Okay, that's what I thought. It would be worth it if you get in, but if you don't, you have a poor chance of getting into other schools.

Hey,

I just found this thread. Glad to see that there are others in my shoes. I submitted my app to AMCAS on Sep 17th, but my transcripts were delivered until a couple days ago. :-(

Hopefully, there will still be some spots to interview for me. This is my top choice. I applied to UNMC and Creighton.

Do you know if the admissions are on a rolling basis or not?

creighton is rolling. unmc is not rolling and begins sending out acceptances around the end of december through mid-march

Awesome. I have ties at Creighton, so hopefully it will help me. Crossing my fingers for UNMC!

I hope you guys get in. Big fan of Ping Pong and the Office ha.

OOS with my whole father being born there and family still there. Rejected, appealed, rejected. Ouch. 70$ down the drain 🙁

me too, OOS just got the email 2 hours ago, rej, appeal, rej.

November: the loneliest month for UNMC's thread...

Yes, its been going by fast though because of all of the exciting Husker games. Any of you think Penn State's got enough to avoid/induce another Husker rally?

Sorry to hear about this...🙁 I'd like to think me not being a native Neb ( although I'm a resident) had some influence in not getting into the EDP. Best of luck to you.

pretty much the same here. I am 21 and sent in my application and was accepted EDP as well (will start next august 2013 when im 22). My adviser said that the stats were accurate though...so idk, good luck to everyone though, but i wouldnt worry about your age

Don't the first decisions (not including EDP) go out in a couple weeks?

last year the first acceptancers went out around the third week of december. i believe the committee meets every wednesday or thursday and selects completed files randomly for decisions that week. the letters are usually mailed out on the thursday/friday of that week for decisions on the randomly selected files. i live in hawaii and got my letter on a tuesday last year

My interview is soon. I have roughly a 27 MCAT in state resident. I hope I get in. Otherwise, I might have to restudy for the darn MCAT again ::shudders::

Hope so too! At least there won't be a writing section 🙂

Don't count yourself out. From my interview impression, UNMC seems to just focus on recruiting well rounded individuals with overall solid apps that present around 9-11's on each MCAT section. Until the MCAT scoring process becomes more transparent no one can truly get down on themselves. Could go on about that, but this is the wrong forum, lol. Good luck🙂

Thanks man. I was scoring 34s on my practice AAMCs and somehow ended-up with a 27. I never scored below a 13 on PS. On the real test, I get a 9 and I was confided in my answers too! Ugh, so frustrating! I wish I knew where I made mistakes!

Hang in there, take a little relief in the fact that you have done everything you can at this point and it is out of your hands. Hope to meet you next fall :xf:

Balloon Hands: I hope you get accepted just so we could spit quotes back and forth from "Drinking out of Cups" 🙂

Is anyone familiar with how thoroughly they review your file?

I heard that each 3-hour committee "decision" session they go over 50 applications.

Each application is over 20 pages of coursework, activities, personal statement, LORs, and interview report...

Do each of the 17 or so committee member really thoroughly read through your file???

Haha. The world will never know.

So is anybody else in the position of going away for a week or two for Christmas right when people are traditionally mailed acceptance packets in December? Snap.

Rrrrrrrrright. But the first non-EDP acceptances are typically mailed out a few days before Christmas, and for those who have eagerly been awaiting any news for several months, it's kind of a big deal.

I don't think our streams crossed on that one.

Do you guys know if every in-state student who applies actually gets an interview? For instance, in 2009, 295 residents applied, but does everyone get an interview? Some say yes and some say no...

According to MSAR - not everyone gets interview. Out of 295 residents, only roughly 230 were selected. I guess they do weed out the very low-stats.

According to the MSAR;

Out of the 230ish interviewed, 130 in-state were "accepted" - don't know if that also includes the waitlisted people.

Can anyone shed light on how the decision is made by the admission committee?

Your file is randomly selected and forwarded to the committee for decision during their meeting. But if they go through so many - like 50ish, how can they really read each applicant's information thoroughly? Isn't it likely that they would miss something - like an important experience or award??

That's what I heard, but you can't really make sure that they read your file. I guess it's all up to them at this point. They spend roughly 7-10 mins on each application. It probably takes 3 mins to read personal statement, 4 mins to read experiences, and the rest of the time is probably spent deliberating on your interview...

I am scared out of mind, if anything. I bombed one of the questions at my interview...ugh.

3 minutes for your PS
5 minutes for your experiences
5 minutes to read many pages of LORs
2 minutes to scan your course history and read your MCAT score
2 minutes to read Interview report
Finally - maybe 5 minutes to deliberate this candidate...

That is nearly 20 minutes at least for each candidate!

For a 3 hour session - that is impossible to go over 50 applicants!

But we assuming that every candidate was "well qualified." I am sure there are candidates that only had like 3 experiences and summarized everything in one line. Or ones that have such low stats that they are probably not going to make it in the second cut (3.3 or below 24 or below ppl)...

Unless the sessions are longer than 3 hours...

On my interview day I spoke with a secretary for awhile, and from that conversation I inferred that there is some sort of advocacy element (by your interviewer) to the review process, so don't discount the influence of interviewers' comments in addition to all of the info we present in the application.

Oh God. My interviewer was Dr. Hill. I hope he has a good impression of me. 😛
