Hi guys! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, though I am sure that everyone assumed this anyways....I just talked to Joni on the phone and she said that she hopes that final decisions will be out by the end of the week. I then asked her if we can assume that if we have not heard by now that we are either wait listed or rejected, and she said not necessarily. I then asked if there were acceptances left, were they outright acceptances or off of the wait list and she said off of the wait list. She said that they are currently working on the wait list. Soooo....there we go.

We're not necessarily WL'd or rejected, but won't be outright accepted...so there's still a chance that we hear absolutely nothing!

Thanks for the update. Hoping for a waitlist spot now..

Maybe I'm just frustrated as to the likely outcome of my UNC application this year, but I can't be alone in feeling that it is absolutely ridiculous that they have not given those of us still waiting any information regarding our applications. I mean seriously, it has been nearly seven months since I interviewed in September with nary a word on the status of my application save for a note around Christmas that I was still under consideration and the constant FAFSA reminders. I mean I'm thankful to not have received a rejection, but the silence is driving me insane! I suppose that I just want a bit of closure. Either outcome, waitlist or rejection would hit me hard, I just want the chance to start processing it. UNC is a great school in many regards and is still by far my top-choice, but IMO they need to reexamine their treatment of applicants.

Sorry for the non-informative post everyone, needed to get that out there...

right there with ya- seems like there are a bunch of us which makes me less hopeful about getting in off of the waitlist if I'm lucky enough to end up there.

just got my waitlist email, I guess that's better than a rejection...more waiting

any idea on movement? I'm assuming they won't tell you where you stand?

So I guess I can assume that I am getting a rejection tomorrow if I didn't receive the wait list email a little while ago... 🙁

I hope you don't, but if you do get rejected you should be getting it today...I just did.

Rejected. Hello $300k debt from out of state school, hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rejected after interviewing in october. 🙁 Wish they woulda just did it awhile back instead of all the waiting for nothing...

Well I asked and I received.... I was right, the rejection hit me hard.

To everyone else receiving sad news tonight, I am truly sorry as I am sure that many of you, if not all, were amazing applicants as well as people (I think the two categories can be divorced sometimes). Though I was not a prolific poster in this thread, I was a constant lurker and you've all helped me through the last seven months a great deal!

Anyone know when financial aid decisions will come out?

I think they said financial aid info will be available at the end of April- beginning of May so that students can make their decisions of where to attend by the May 15 deadline.

I'm on the wait list here and I want to send a letter of intent. Should I send it to my committee member interviewer? If not, who should I send it to? Dean of admissions?

Has anyone heard from the financial aid office? It's getting close to the end of April so I want to make sure I didn't just miss something...thanks!

Also, is it normal for schools to give financial aid decisions so late? It seems like they give us information really close to the deadline for committing to a school.

Anybody?

Nope. Also has the financial office requested any documents from anyone (i.e parent's tax returns or yours)? I've only filled out FAFSA.

Hello. New to this site. 10th grader. NC resident. 4.0 GPA. SAT-I 2300(M780 R760 W760). Lots of very good ECs(AP-Subjects, Research. Shadowing, Sports, Math/Science-Competitions). Need some advise.

(1) If I do undergraduate in schools like Ivy, Stanford, MIT, John Hopkins, Duke etc then if I apply to UNC MD, would it increase my in-state-quoto admission chances OR reduce OR neutral?
(2) Does UNC give preference to "NC Resident who did UG in InState-Public-School" over "NC Resident who did UG in OOS or Private school undergraduates"?
(3) If I attend Ivy league schools under graduate, I bet my GPA likely to be less. Are there any "Unofficial" conversion table, something like Harvard-GPA 3.3 = Columbia-GPA 3.5 = ECU-GPA 3.7?
(4) If I get BS/MD(Schools like ECU, Miami, VCU, Drexel, Penn State etc.,) right out of high school, what would you suggest. Take it? Dont take it? I am not sure what you guys are going thru to get into MD. Study/Work/Research/Study-abroad/Volunteer/GPA/MCAT/ApplicationProcess/Interview/Overall-Stress? What is the success rate of MD applicants. For example, UNC honors has 200+ students. I bet most of them are already working towards that MD seat. Similarly there are honors all over the in-state schools. How many apply and succeed?

Many thanks in advance for your advise.

You might want to consider starting a thread about this elsewhere; at this point, people are probably mostly checking this thread for waitlist movement and financial aid information.

You're probably better off asking the questions about success rate to the actual admissions office or the pre-med office at the schools you're interested in (I think if you look at all applicants to medical school across the country, the success rate is ~40%). The other questions probably don't actually have real answers other than "go where you feel comfortable and do well". (If UNC has preferences other than "in state", they probably won't tell you. This site has the demographics, including schools attended, of their incoming class. http://www.med.unc.edu/admit/about-unc/our-students/demographics/demographics#schools)

NOTE: Honestly though, 10th grade is pretty early to be worrying about med school.

(1) If I do undergraduate in schools like Ivy, Stanford, MIT, John Hopkins, Duke etc then if I apply to UNC MD, would it increase my in-state-quoto admission chances OR reduce OR neutral? This really is person-dependent. Go where you'll be successful.
(2) Does UNC give preference to "NC Resident who did UG in InState-Public-School" over "NC Resident who did UG in OOS or Private school undergraduates"? It doesn't matter where you go, it matters if you're a NC resident or not.
(3) If I attend Ivy league schools under graduate, I bet my GPA likely to be less. Are there any "Unofficial" conversion table, something like Harvard-GPA 3.3 = Columbia-GPA 3.5 = ECU-GPA 3.7? No conversion table, official or unofficial. Your undergrad really doesn't matter much unless you go to an unknown school in which case it's a disadvantage.
(4) If I get BS/MD(Schools like ECU, Miami, VCU, Drexel, Penn State etc.,) right out of high school, what would you suggest. Take it? Dont take it? I am not sure what you guys are going thru to get into MD. Study/Work/Research/Study-abroad/Volunteer/GPA/MCAT/ApplicationProcess/Interview/Overall-Stress? That's totally up to you, but if you don't take it be prepared to be more stressed and work much harder during your undergrad years.
What is the success rate of MD applicants. Historically, 40-45% get accepted to at least one medical school.
For example, UNC honors has 200+ students. I bet most of them are already working towards that MD seat. Similarly there are honors all over the in-state schools. How many apply and succeed? Honors or not really doesn't matter much. Also FYI at UNC, Honor Program is not the same thing as graduating with honors.

Many thanks in advance for your advise.

Pick an undergraduate institution that will provide you the broadest resources and opportunities possible while offering an education and lifestyle that meet your needs. That's all you should really consider as a high school student. You may very well find another field or profession that interests you more than medicine. And that's the beauty of going to undergrad. (For that reason, I personally would avoid a BS/MD program.)

Whether you attend an elite private such as Yale or Stanford or an elite public such as UCLA or Virginia or UNC, you will be competitive for any medical school should that be where your heart is 4-5 years from now, assuming of course you do well in the classroom, on the MCAT, and elsewhere.

As trite as it sounds, the journey is the fun part. Don't limit yourself from the outset. If medicine interests you, of course register for the requisite bios and chems. But allow yourself to explore other things in college, as well. Enjoy the ride.

you're stressing me out.

ALL: Thank you. You showed some good points/directions.

peanutz & tenover: Is there a specific UNC-MD thread. Would appreciate if you could point me if there is one. I will move my thread to that place.

TheKDizzle: Thank you for the tips. Planning ahead. By next October, I should be applying to schools. Want to gauge myself towards either to BS/MD or BS accordingly.

SSCCSS: Thank you.🙂

This is the unc thread.

Did anybody hear about financial aid yet?
Still not heard. They told me on April 29 that we would hear "very soon." Have since emailed and left voicemail - no response. Seems very close to the May 15 deadline.

yep this is kind of annoying/stressful

Am wondering if this is not so much a problem with UNC, but a state-wide problem in NC. Specifically, "Gov. Pat McCrory's proposed $140 million in cuts to the state's university system, which include tuition hikes and slashing financial aid." http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=news/local&id=9086088

Perhaps UNC has been unsure of funds it will get for 2013-2014, and is still trying to sort it all out.

If this is the case, it would be nice to get an email or any type of notice from them, so that we are not left out in the dark about this. Or at least a call back for the people who emailed them/ left voicemails.
Oh well, it can't be much longer. April 15 is exactly a week away.

he seems to be proposing oos tuition hikes, and putting that money into the state's general fund instead of back into the university (hence the potential decrease in financial aid). these articles seem to be talking about undergrad, though.

Hey guys...

I am working in Nephrology currently in Raleigh. Has anyone ever gone to this: http://www.unckidneycenter.org/grandrounds.pdf ? Or the Regular "Grand Rounds"? Can anyone show up? I feel like it would be cool to go not only to meet people but because since I am already working in nephrology the education would actually benefit me. Thanks.

I'd email UNC Nephrology to ask if you need to register for GR and whether it would be alright for you to attend.

They emailed my UNC account (I work here, and I recently figured out that the @med.unc.edu just sends stuff to my existing @email.unc.edu address), so I checked ConnectCarolina.

http://my.unc.edu/

Click "ConnectCarolina Student Center" and sign in. You'll see a place to View Financial Aid.

Yes, I got mine yesterday morning too. 95% COE covered by loans. I think that is the standard offer to instate applicants.

One thing to keep in mind to help you in-state NC folks out there who are applying in the future. I'm an NC resident and always thought it would be cheaper to go to school instate. Logical right? But this view can be very much mistaken - as I've just found out. Turns out, it will be much more expensive for me to go to UNC than to go out of state. If I take out all the loans at UNC (to pay the full $50K instate COE per year), I will be close to $200K in debt, not counting interest. (Be wary of that $100K average indebtedness figure for UNC - I thought that would be the debt I would incur at UNC - you may end up well over that). In my case, it turns out that I will graduate with about $50K less debt if I go to a top 10 private school in the north-east instead, which has offered me an almost full tuition scholarship. UNC was always my #1 choice and am now agonizing over whether to withdraw or not before May 15, based purely on financial reasons. UNC is in the difficult position of being a state school, exposed to hikes in tuition (mainly coming from new NC legislature), while their scholarship funds stay flat. More hikes in UNC med school tuition are expected over the next 4 years. Private schools obviously have more control over their tuition and have access to more resources for scholarships.

Hey guys. Are they gonna send out emails as well? I can't check mine on ConnectCarolina because I don't know my password. Apparently I got and onyen when I was accepted for undergrad but I didn't attend. I tried to create a new password but they won't let me -_-

Is anybody else waiting for their fin aid? I submitted FAFSA before the deadline, but there is nothing listed in ConnectCarolina yet...

Two things to consider:

1. There are a number of scholarships students can apply for within the Medical Alumni Association. I'm not sure if those are offered to entering MS1s but MS2s and on are certainly notified about them in the spring. Perhaps inquire about those options in the next few days? I know several people who received minimal tuition grants initially and then were selected for additional scholarships.

2. I am good friends with a number of UNC MS1s, each of whom have taken out far less than UNC's COA ~$47K figure. Conversely, I've found in my own experience that cost of living in major cities is never as 'cheap' as school figures calculate them to be. Assuming the private to which you are referring is in a Boston, NYC, or Philly, you could end up spending quite a bit to maintain the lifestyle you want, eating away at that $50K.

You're right - UNC is in a tough place because it's a school worthy of students who are weighing Top 10s like yourself; however, they are so limited in terms of the resources they can offer those candidates. Hopefully you'll stick with Chapel Hill - it's a wonderful place. But you're in an understandably tough position.

I have to agree with this. Here is the UNC budget: http://www.med.unc.edu/ome/finaid/cost-of-education

Room is quoted at 12,512... you could easily spend half this. Board is 4,560 which is also overstated for the triangle area. And miscellaneous is 6,000 whereas other schools' budgets are closer to 4,000 for this category. This is the same with other schools, but nobody spends >2,000 on books. Put this all together and you could very comfortably spend 35k a year to attend UNC, which I would imagine makes it close to the same price as the other school you're considering.

Thanks all for the great advice. Will try everything possible to make it work with UNC.
