I interviewed 10/6 with Dr gettes. 3.8/3.8/30. Reapplicant IS.

I know the waiting is hard... I waited 4 months last time and never got the call... my advice is (as hard as it is), try to stay away from sdn and don't even think ab it being Monday or if they'll call. I was expecting another long wait (I thought my adcom interviewer was rather skeptical and unimpressed with my application). I stressed myself out so bad last time, its just not worth it.

I wanted to comment on what some others said ab nontrads. I agree that UNC looks at nontrads in a very skeptical way, as opposed to many other schools that view it as a positive or at least interesting. I tried my best to tone down my nontradiness, bc I am almost positive that was a big part of the reason that I was rejected last time.

Good luck everyone! And if it doesn't work out this year call up UNC, see why they rejected you and improve exactly what they say and you will have a good shot at it next time!

For those who are curious, I am an in-state reapplicant, submitted to AMCAS in late June, received secondary August 17th , submitted secondary August 28th, interviewed on October 9th, and just got the call tonight (11/27).

In my excitement I forgot to mention who my ADCOM was; it was Dr. Houpt. He wasn't the person who made the phone call though. And GrabSlamBoot, I was surprised too haha...i've been telling everyone how horribly my interview went. In fact, I didn't even want to describe my experience here on SDN haha.
 
Any other reapplicants who have interviewed but haven't heard about a decision yet?

Haha I think they kinda gave us a hard time... I thought this was one of my worst too. Congrats!!!

Random question, but does anyone know if dependents are able to sign up to use the gym (for a fee or not)
 
People in last year's forum talked about a subcommittee. Is that the two people who interviewed you or something else?

All I know is that every other week (generally Monday nights), the admissions committee (ADCOM) meets and votes on who to accept. One of your two interviewers is a voting member on this admissions committee, so if they really liked you they will pull out your application during the meeting and tell the other ADCOM members to vote for you. I'm not aware of any sort of formal subcommittee.

I too have seen references to a "subcommittee". It would be really, really nice if they provided a little more info about how the process works. I wonder if anyone who knows a current student would be able to get the inside scoop?
 
I've heard that the order that they decide on your apps is rather arbitrary and that's it is almost solely based on your adcoms schedule and wether or not they have made it to meetings. No news is good news.

Every candidate is interviewed by two individuals at UNC - one voting member and one non-voting member. The non-voting member's responsibilities and involvement with a candidate's application end after they submit a post-interview evaluation of their impressions of the interview + application. Conversely, your voting member is your 'advocate' - not only do they craft a post-interview evaluation, they also usher your application through the rest of the process.

The ADCOM (all of the voting members who interview candidates) is divided into subcommittees. At some point after the interview, an advocate presents an application to their subcommittee. The subcommittee then determines where that applicant stands relative to everyone else interviewed by the members of that subcommittee.

However, getting out of the subcommittee is apparently the hardest part as they are the group they really tears apart and analyzes an application + interviews in their entirety.

thank you for the insight. I'm guessing my adcom has decided not to advocate for me since he has admitted a bunch of other folks. sad that one person has so much control over the fate of an application. meh.

I wouldent assume your chances are shot. I had friends get accepted in February after interviewing in sept. it'll all work out got the best.
 
I was under the impression that it works pretty much exactly like that as well...

In the way I understand things, there is some correlation between how fast the turnaround is and how much they like your app. Obviously their favorites are going to be the first to let in, and least favorites wont be considered until they are rejected in the spring (me last time) but there are tons of applicants that are in the middle. I imagine when they are discussing these applicants is when the waiting time gets arbitrary.

Perhaps each subcommittee can only bring a certain number of applicants per meeting to the committee, so their top few get there. So if you interview early, there is a better chance of you getting into that group each time they meet. Depending what the ad com members think of the new ppl they interview, you may surpass them at any point. Also consider that the applicants tend to be more competitive earlier on. This is just speculation, but another school I know of has a system that works this way ( they are completely transparent ab it) and it seems it could really fit in this case as well...

I think the pessimism is unwarranted. It's November. People are outright admitted through March. I've heard UNC is still admitting a lot of their all-star 38/3.95 applicants now, though obviously not exclusively. You could be at the top end of the heap and it's all a matter of time for all you know. Hang tough.

I've mostly looked at reapplicants in years past (as a reapplicant myself), but stats don't seem to correlate to strongly with wait time between interview and decision. A number of folks with stats below yours waited less than 30 days and others with high stats had to wait 90. Roughly half of them were accepted after 2 adcom meetings following their interview. A few found out after only 1 meeting and the rest were between 3 and 5.

I think KDizz is right. At this point, post interview, stats become less important (still important, but less so than pre-interview).

I wouldent worry. It's all dependent on your admission members schedule. If he hasn't been to a meeting yet then you shouldent sweat it. My guy hasn't been to any and there's no point in beating urself up waiting. It'll all work out

I thought someone who had Toews got accepted Monday. I also interviewed with him back in Sept, still no news, so I hope I'm wrong.
 
Nice. At my interview I do remember him saying something along the lines of "if you hear back in October that would be light speed". Maybe we'll hear from him after the next meeting.

You had Dr. Falk as your adcom right? I thought my interview with her went pretty badly. She was basically stoic when I told her my life story (I think she asks that question for everyone she interviews haha) and I didn't really get the impression that she was very interested in what I had to say. So if you had a similar experience, I wouldn't worry too much about it, your time will come!
 
How do you know how many meetings your adcom has been to? Do you just infer from what other folks have posted?

Yeah. I just inferred that since it was your other one who called you. Then he is the one who represented you since it seems to be the trend that the one who represents you is the one who gives you the good news. But who knows.

Sometimes voting members of the committee stand in as non-voting members to facilitate interviews. This often happens when non-voting faculty are unavailable on random days. And they function just as non-voting members who are not part of the full committee would. There is only one designated advocate - you're only put in one subcommittee.

Correct, normally one is called by their advocate.
 
Hi guys,

Congratulations to those of you who are already accepted! I still remember that day in my life exactly a year and a month ago.

To all those still waiting, hang in there! Some adcoms are late in discussing their applicants. I was accepted by Dr. Gettis (He is one of the faster ones).

But I'm here to answer any of your questions if you have any. Obviously, UNC is the best school out there and no one should pick anyone over us. Jk, but seriously.
 
Anyone know how to go about sending update letters? Do I email a specific person or is there a general email for updates?

I'm OOS, if that makes a difference.

At interview day they said they don't generally consider them. You could email Ms. Joni and ask.
 
Anyone here interview with Dr. Church? Is it true that he doesn't usually call and he takes forever (assuming you are accepted)?
 
I interviewed with Dr. Church as well, I only did recently so I am not sure how he operates but would be interested to know.
 
Has anyone interviewed with Dr. Woodard? I know he is not local to Chapel Hill, so I was wondering if he attends every committee meeting.

There has been one person in this thread with an acceptance from Dr. Church and I believe that applicant received a phone call. I interviewed with him in September and haven't heard back, so I'm hoping he's just busy.
