1) Describe your ideas about how the medical profession can best respond to disparities in healthcare.

By medical profession do they mean just a Physician practicing medicine or do they mean the entire medical community, like incl. hospitals, organizations, etc. ?

2) If you have experienced academic difficulties, please explain the situation and how it was resolved. (Please explain all grades less than a “B” (including B-) or any “withdrawal” on your transcripts). Is "withdrawal" the same thing as dropping a course after the drop/add period so you get a grade of DR?

Thanks guys!

1. I talked about the medical system as a whole.

2. Yes

Waitlisted...anyone else hear back? Interviewed 12/4

Pretty much knew I was either waitlisted or declined when I saw the letter in my mailbox as they said they would call for acceptances haha.

Did NOT want to open the letter.

When did you get the letter? I interviewed the same day but haven't heard anything one way or the other

I know this is a long shot but I was just wondering if any 4th year working in admissions know if they are reviewing/sending ii before the winter break?? Thanks.

IS here...wanting some IS love:luck::xf:

I'm not a 4th year in admissions, but I did get a SELECT interview invitation today for January 14th. I hope this helps a little.

Does anyone know how many individuals will be accepted into the SELECT program this year? And do they interview fewer individuals for this program compared to the core?

Last year they offered 40ish spots. For core they offer around 120 spots so I would assume they interview fewer SELECT only as compared to core only applicants.

when were you complete ?

I was complete 8/31. Also, I declined the offer to interview so maybe one of you will get a chance. I thought about it A LOT, and I ultimately decided to commit to FSU because I will be able to spend my clinical years at home much closer to family. Anyway, I wish everyone the best of luck at this school. It seems like an AMAZING program, and I am so grateful that I was even considered for it. Happy Holidays!

ACCEPTED! Interviewed 11/26 for the SELECT program. So pumped, this is definitely my #1!!

for those of you who attend, how are the classes? i heard that if your late the seats in the class fill up and if you have to go to another room where you just hear the audio of the professor lecturing. do they also post lectures online? are the classes p/f? thanks

...That doesn't sound right...

yeah thats why i was asking lol i remember reading that in a previous USF thread

I was wondering if anyone knew approximately how much scholarship money on average USF has dispersed to students suffering from financial difficulties. I understand that the committee uses the information from the FAFSA analysis. Is the money awared completely dependent on the specific scenario? Ball park range would be nice if someone had ideas. Thanks!

No, they renovated both the first and second year lecture spaces. More than enough seats for all. Chairs are so comfortable it's sometimes hard to stay awake 😉

All lectures are recorded and posted online so you can watch whenever/at your own speed.

We are pass/fail with a cut off of 73% or 2 Standard deviations from the mean, whichever is lower.

Thanks! Is pass/fail for all 4 years? Is there high pass, honors, etc? If not, how is class rank and AOA determined?

Well the pass fail thing is new, the class of 2014 (current MS3 class) was the first to have it so I'm not 100% sure about 3rd and 4th year grades in terms of high pass/honors BUT I know it remains pass fail. During years one and two, there is a simple pass/fail, if you get a 73 it is the same as a 93 at the end of the course.

There is no rank or AOA as far as we are told. I will speak with the powers that be after break and share what I learn with y'all.

That would be awesome, thank you! I'm glad a current student is available to provide info about the school.

Does anyone know if there is a Facebook group for accepted class of 2017 students?

Hey all. Interviewing for the SELECT MD program on Jan 28th.

I'm an old foagie applicant, ripe old 29. Been in the Army 5 years as an environmental health officer and now I'm leaving the service to go to medical school. Florida resident.

Currently waitlisted at U of Florida and still in consideration for U of A-Tuscon.

I completed secondary for USF back in August, but I just got the e-mail last week so for those still waiting, don't give up hope.

Any tips for the SELECT interview would be appreciated. I'm flying back from Korea (where I'm currently stationed) for this interview, so I will probably still be a bit jet-lagged.

anyone who interviewed on 11/14 hear anything back? How many people did select interview ?

Has anyone who interviewed in December for the regular MD program heard anything?

No AOA? That is really, really strange for them to not participate in that.

Edit: Just looked it up, USF does participate in AOA. Therefore there is some sort of ranking system to determine who gets inducted.

Pretty sure there's still AOA, but based on clinical grades

This is not surprising, as ejw5075 told us that the first class with pass/fail was the Class of 2014...whether or not there is AOA starting next year is the interesting part.

If you click on one or the links (I think it was selection process) it indicates that the top quartile of the class is eligible and then from there they use your clinical grades to decide. It may be pass fail but there has to be some sort of internal ranking that they use, but probably not tell the students. There is a scholarship available for the person who is #1 in their class each year so they have to keep track some how.

My reasoning behind why it was so surprising is because so many established medical schools participate in the honor society.

II this morning. Complete 11/1

I interviewed 12/11 and was lucky enough to get accepted recently.

I interviewed on 12/11.

Missed a phone call this Tuesday from director of admissions because I was in class. Haven't able to reach the number since. I don't want to sound presumptuous but it is probably an acceptance right?

For those accepted do you mind sharing the gist of the conversation?

I don't think you're being presumptuous:

"Hey you've been accepted. There's nothing you need to do. There will be an envelope in the mail. Congrats."

I think they only call for acceptances so congrats!!! Degausser gave a good description of what the call was like.

is this school receptive to Letter of Interests? Its where I did my undergrand and would love to attend here, but no love from USF yet.

I interviewed here Tuesday, but I can't remember seeing many group study spaces.
I remember the room they showed us with the white board walls that can expand to create a large room- this was used for the problem based learning with faculty correct?
Were there other quiet places on campus that had small rooms for students to get together to study? I didn't see much of the library, beyond that the first floor was kind of an open study area.
Thanks for the help!

You're talking about Group Learning, with the removable white board walls. A lot of people study there but the rooms fill up fast. The med school library is ok, but I don't like it because there's not much space, it's either too cold or too hot for me, and it smells weird. Your other option is the undergrad library on the other side of campus. It's open 24/5 and has a Starbucks that's open 24/5 too, but it's full of undergrads. There are not really any open classrooms after hours. We are definitely pressed for space, so a lot of people study at home or at a Starbucks near their house.
I love USF, but my one concern is the huge lack of study spaces. However, USF is very receptive to student feedback, and they have been discussing possible solutions for more space, especially as the MS2s are beginning to study for Step 1. Hopefully they will find a solution soon!
