Got the alternate pool email from UTMB.

Then I found this quote on their website.

"The number taken from the pool varies from year to year, but is usually somewhere between 10 and 15."

Guess its time to start work on reapplying...

I got the same email and am OOS as well. Anyone have any idea how many OOS applicants are on this list (or is it simply everyone who hasn't been accepted yet..)? It also said applicants holding an acceptance at any other school on June 1st will be withdrawn from this list. Does that include AMCAS schools or only TMDSAS schools?

I think they're referring to tmdsas applicants. Then again as a reread the email they could be talking for all application services. Maybe someone else can clarify. If that us the case, then I will be out the running.

I got the same email. I am IS. I think all interviewed students but not accepted got this email because the pool seems too large.

I have not gotten the e-mail. Does that mean I'm not even considered anymore for the school?!?!?!? 😕

Alternate pool 🙁 oh no..
OOS
Ugh

Got my acceptance at exactly 12:00!!
Texas A&M Biology major
3.96 GPA 3.94 SGPA
8ph 9vb 10bio- taken once (was stupid and didn't study, I regret that)

I Interviewed in late August, I don't have any formal leadership roles, I've been through moderate hardship, I have moderate medical experience, a lot of volunteer and research along with work experience, I felt like I interviewed well and I wrote creative essays...

I'm extremely excited to see all of you as members of UTMB's class of 2017!

Good luck to those wait-listed :luck:

Got an email at midnight, thought it was a match at first but turns out to be a MD/PhD acceptance!

Congrats! If you have any questions about the program, feel free to PM me. 🙂

Congrats to everyone who also matched here!

Thanks for the input. I guess now we just have to wait for another 3 months. What else is new haha

Any suggestions on housing? I have a 3 year old son that will start school in 2015.

Does anyone know how likely an OOS gets pulled from the alternate list?

I've tried looking at the last 2 years threads but can't gather anything from it. We will be in the dark for a while buddy. We need to hope that the OOSers accepted choose to withdraw early and go to other choices; otherwise, it's neurotic waiting. This will be my last post on this thread until I hear something or withdraw. Whichever comes first. Good luck everyone.

Is there any IS applicant receiving "alternate pool" letter from UTMB?

is anyone else having trouble logining into Mystar????

I don't have kids, but I did a little reseach on housing and I found gulf apartment locators..they do houses as well. You should check them out!

Thanks, I will look them up

I live in Part at Cedar Lawn apartments in the island (~5 - 7 minutes in car). They are very nice ($50-100 more). I see a public school just behind these apartments (from my balcony actually!) and within walking distance. I have no more information about it as I do not have kids. You could inquire about it, if interested.

There is also another option of living in league city (20 min), webster, or clearlake (~30 min to island) which has some good schools, if driving is not a problem.

Hope this is helpful and Congratulations on you acceptance!!

finally got into Mystar and accepted my offer!

Now, is there a Facebook page made for the Class of 2017 yet?

ACCEPTED!!!

I got the email with the video! So happy to be going to UTMB!!!

So, I went online to MyStar and accepted the offer. Do we need to do anything else at this point?

Yeah baby!!!

Regarding housing, do most people live in nearby apartments (like Ferry Road Apts) or the school housing? I really like the efficiency suit ($360 per month) offered by the Ferry Road Apts but the school housing (~$2000 per semester) seems much nicer.

Does anyone know anything about the fraternities on campus? Phi Rho Sigma,
Alpha Kappa Kappa, Phi Beta Pi, Phi Chi, Theta Kappa Psi.

Pros / Cons of each perhaps?

And the pros/cons of living at the fraternity house VS. somewhere else on the island.

Thanks in advance.

just called the admissions office to ask whether they are receptive to letters of intent/an additional rec letter. they said they prefer not to receive them but would take it if i felt it was necessary... any thoughts? should i do it?

What have you got to lose?

So this means nobody got rejected post interview???

For any current Medical Students. Did many of your fellow classmates get in off the waitlist? If so, is there some common actions that they took to improve their chances(ie update letters, calls, additional LORS)? Thanks in advance. The wait is killer.

If UTMB were to pull someone off the waiting list, how long does the applicant have to respond? Do they have to withdraw from the school where they are already holding an acceptance immediately, or do they get sometime to do all this?

I think they give you two weeks or so, and if you need more time you can always call.

I got in off the waitlist at UTMB on the last week of May. I originally matched to TTU Lubbock, but I sent a letter of intent in mid-March telling the admissions director (Theresa Silva) that I would drop this acceptance and fully intend on attending UTMB should I be given the offer. I sent a letter of continued interest in mid-May reminding them that I continue to be interested in matriculating there. About a week after I sent that second letter, I got accepted off the waitlist.

Also, congrats to all those who matched here.

I seriously want to meet the person in the jersey when I get there. Best harlem shake ever!

If any currents students plan on having a vacant apartment for part of the summer and would be willing to rent it out, I am a very willing clean obsessed potential tenant! Please message me if so or if you are aware of any other students willing to rent out there place for PREP! Any other suggestions as to where to live during PREP would be greatly appreciated 😀

I did not get invited to PREP. I thought every new student would be invited, or am I missing something?

There aren't enough spots for every student. If you really want to do it, email someone and ask and they will invite you if there are openings. Most people I know didn't do it. Might as well enjoy your summer IMO.

If anyone has considered military medicine and wants more info, let me know. I am in the Navy's HSCP program and it pays pretty well, full health benefits for you and your family, etc. Send me a private message if you want more info.

Retrospectively, I wish I had just enjoyed that last summer vs. doing PREP... I think it can be useful, but honestly, you just do it all again and it only gives you a bit of a leg up for a couple weeks. After those first few weeks, you're on the exact same playing field as everyone else. And because you mostly use Scribes (student written lecture notes) to study once school starts for real (which you don't have in PREP) ... you end up having to redo all the "studying" you did during PREP.

But really, I would go back and enjoy my summer if I could. I haven't had more than a few days off since January 2012... joys of medical school - no spring break, and after winter break 2nd year, the only time you get off is the time you don't schedule electives in / get by taking Step 1 early.

ENJOY YOUR LIVES 😀

Don't expect anything until May 15th at the absolute earliest. I met with a TX dean of admissions (not UTMB's, but all the same) recently and they said that the adcoms usually won't even meet until the week before the 15th. Depending on how many people drop from the class on May 15th, they may pull one or a few off of the list in that next week.
