Both of these schools are at the top of my list, and I've run down my pros and cons until crosseyed. I'd be interested to see if anyone else is wrestling with this decision as well and what criteria you are weighing most heavily. Cheers to all!

Current students: When does SA send scholarship information? Will they let us know before ranking like UTSW? Thanks

Have any OOS applicants received news? Interviewed on 11/12...not a peep...this and Phoenix are my top choices...

Nope, nothing since the first round that went out. Hopefully this week!

Avg. USMLE scores are irrelevant as they represent the old curriculum.

I agree that USMLE scores are irrelevant with the new curriculum. I only imagine the scores will be better for those studying the new curriculum.

I'm also struggling with how to rank SA and UTMB. Both seemed like a great fit for me and are my top two. I seriously need to make a list of pros and cons.

Although I agree current scores are not representative of the new curriculum I wouldn't quite say they are completely irrelevant. The scores MAY increase with the new curriculum, but they MAY also decrease. Therefore, I would argue that current scores are all the only thing we can use to predict future scores.

Either way, step scores aren't really going to influence my decision much, as they speak more about the individual student rather than the school. I was just curious as to what they were. Although one of my interviewers at UTMB argued that the Step 1/MCAT ratio can be used to as a method of determining quality of education and therefore UTMB was the best medical school in Texas, lol.

A note of caution on step scores: Just remember that official step reports are never published, or even compiled AFAIK. Rather, each school "self-reports" their own scores, and it is very easy to bias those scores without technically lying (like only reporting the scores of the first "batch" of students to take the exam in any given year...i.e. those who felt most prepared and didn't want to delay the exam). Some schools may be more transparent than others. I honestly have no idea how UTHSCSA reports their scores. This is just a general note.

Just want to make sure, for those who prematched, we only needed to accept through the website to make it official, correct? No papers to sign and mail in or anything? I got the letter of acceptance in the mail and read it over carefully, but I'm still paranoid about missing something.

Anything new out there on the OOS acceptance front?

Is there a second round of pre matches coming out for those later interviewees (11/12)?

Nothing new for OOS, as far as I know. My guess is they'll send out the remaining ~7 to get the number up to 22 around Xmas, and then trickle out acceptances as people withdraw.

Alas, I didn't pre-match here. I'm lighting candles and séancing my way thru the disappointment. There is rumor of a new Chipotle sprouting up next to the med school, which leads me to believe this institution and I are meant to be.

And here all this time I had pegged you as a Qdoba kind of guy.

I think there will be more pre-matches coming up for all who have interviewed and have not been pre-matched yet, regardless of when they interviewed....if they have your app on file, and you interviewed last week or in September...you could potentially receive a prematch offer

There is a Chipole opening It opens in August. Walk able distance.

This isn't fair 🙁 I couldn't bear the waiting for this school. Send me pre-match already !!

im OOS and im scheduled to interview in mid december. does anyone know if ill be interviewing for a waitlist spot ?? it seems like for OOS it has been rolling admissions and many spots are already given out. thanks!

Me too! I want a premAtch! Top choice probably. Does anyone know if you have to buy a particular laptop or iPad as part of the new curriculum. Do we get programs or anything like that? I want to buy an iPad and new Mac laptop but I'm wondering if we'd need to buy something like that as part of the curriculum.

I live across the street from the school and there is indeed a chipotle opening right next to the chik-fil-a.

They don't make you buy any specific laptop, but they do have minimum requirements. I think the min specs are too high and definitely not necessary to run the software they give you, but whatever. If you're buying a new computer it will almost certainly meet the requirements anyway. The school does give you the option to purchase a laptop through them and they'll also install and configure stuff for you. Here's the computer options and minimum specs we current MS1s had. Can't say what will change next year.

The school is very technology-intensive. You pay a technology fee (installments spread over 4 years) that includes lifetime licenses to some 24 e-textbooks (VitalSource, with unlimited ability to copy/past/print), an external hard-drive with a ton of virtual microscopy/histology stuff, radiology images, and an anatomy study question bank with 2700 previous exam questions. Having a computer is mandatory at least twice a week, once for the histopathology lab and once for the synthesis case discussion. Additionally each class sets up a shared Google drive that everyone has access to and people upload tons of notes/tables/charts/reviews that they made or found or that have been passed down from upperclassmen. For most lectures someone usually sets up a google doc into which the learning objectives are copied and those who want will collectively answer those objectives as the class goes on. It's then available to anyone in the class, even if you didn't contribute. They also video podcast every lecture (with powerpoint presentations synced) and use online modules a lot. The entire curriculum is administered through Blackboard.

I was quite nervous going in about not having any physical textbooks, as I was afraid reading from a screen wouldn't be effective, but it's really worked out nicely thus far. I also have an ipad, which is a lot easier on the eyes when reading 10+ pages in one sitting since it can be held closer to my eyes. Even without a tablet I think the benefits outweigh any disadvantages. You can search your entire library (including your notes that you've typed) at once and open up any images or figures as full size high quality images for copy/pasting into review slides or whatever.

Awesome. I'm guessing a new Mac should be no problem as they Are a fairly common choice?

Talked to admissions about an address change, and they told me they should be sending out the last of the OOS acceptances before Dec. 15. Don't know if that's definite, but that's what I heard.

Yeah probably half the class uses a macbook. The on-campus IT dept is a certified service provider for Apple, Dell, and Lenovo, so if you have any problems with one of those laptops you can just drop it off there. If you buy your laptop from the school and ever need repairs they'll give you a lonor to use, too.

I was nervous too. I don't really enjoy reading hundreds of pages off a computer screen, so I usually print out what I want to read and put it in binders. It's not too expensive that way if you buy toner off the internet, I think I paid around $20 for discount toner online and it has worked well so far. I do read some (maybe up to 20 or so pages from the computer or ipad) and it isn't really a problem.

The best thing about the electronic books (and vital source which is the program they run from) is the search feature. You can search all book simultaneously or specific books depending on how you set up the search. It makes research very fast and of course the sources are reliable. The highlighting and notes feature is also pretty cool and you can share your notes and highlights with other people in your class (though admittedly I don't use the highlighter that often, I just take notes).

And this school is very cooperative. I would not survive without the google drive the class set up. You can contribute what you want/can to it and it is there for everybody to see and use. If students or faculty have great sources or learning materials they share it. The people are what brought me here originally and I have not been disappointed. Aside from the normal stress that comes with school everybody seems very happy here.

Best of luck to everybody!

does anyone know when utsa will stop interview invites for TX?

Im assuming they already stopped. I think their last interview date is December 16th. I guess its still possible but I kind of already gave up.

JUST GOT AN II

Dates available were 12/10, 12/17, and 1/7.

Now the only schools in Texas that haven't given me an interview invite are Baylor and Texas Tech Lubbock, so grateful I have 6/8 interviews in Texas. :luck:

There is still hope for the test out there who haven't heard anything!

Accepted!!!! OOS, interviewed 10/15. Soooooooo excited.

Congrats guys. I guess thats probably it? 🙁

Just browsed the old San Antonio thread and it doesn't look like they sent out anymore prematches after nov 15 🙁. I interviewed after the prematch and was hoping to hear something earlier, but It looks I might have to wait till feb 1st.

Nah, there are plenty of people who matched after 15 Nov and posted on sdn. I would be surprised if no one else posted a prematch here before the end of the month....just hafta wait n see.......

I dunno why I could not find any. Just oos acceptances.

Edit: oh I know why. It's because they sent more prematches late November and around this week last year, but they haven't sent any out since nov 15 this yr. I guess they are just running a later schedule this yr.
