We have any ideas as to when OOS interviews are gonna start coming?

Congratulations 1289 🙂 that's an optimistic status given the context. It seems like they have started reviewing out of state applicants. Good luck.

And to the poster right above me, I hope oos interviews are coming soon. I was complete July 16th.

Hey guys, I have a 27 P Mcat (10,6,11) and a 4.0 GPA at Virginia Tech. I have 150 shadowing and 150 volunteering hours. 2 years of research and leadership experiences. Do I have a chance here?

Honestly, with a 6 in anything it is nearly impossible getting into an MD school.

Your sciences are competitive. Your verbal will sink you. DO is always an option but you should first try a few different things to raise your verbal.

Going for MD is going to be difficult with a 6. I would re-take the MCAT and bring up your verbal score. If it was in the same range as your PS and BS scores, you'd be much more competitive. In fact, based on your other stats you'd have a very strong application in general and could go for some reach schools!

Thanks guys for the advice. I was scoring from 7-9 on my verbal. I never felt confident about it. I am just afraid that my scores might decrease. I am just going to try this cycle and if not retake it next year. VCU said they look at overall scores rather than individual. But still a 27 is right on the average. I hope they can see my GPA

I don't think vcu's average is a 27 Mcat. Even your composite is low. I wish u the best of luck but like the others mentioned, things may be difficult.

If you decide to re-take I found that reading a lot of high quality magazine articles over several months helped my verbal score out quite a bit. I got better at remembering details and paying attention to what I was reading. You can try stuff from magazines like Scientific American, The Economist, or The Atlantic.

Don't laugh but updating my contact lens/glasses Rx helped me raise my score 4 points from my first pratice test.

just got the MAY status change. OOS, 3.5cGPA, 31R MCAT

has anyone who received the "MAY" status change received an interview yet? im getting a little worried, especially since my stats aren't strikingly good...

I got the further status, and also got put on hold. Anyone have any idea about this? I am doing an SMP this year, but was given an interview last year and wait-listed lasted year without an SMP.

Do people get interview invites while on hold?? My first semester SMP grades won't come out until Mid to late December so I don't want to lessen my chances by interviewing late.

I was in an SMP last year and I know some of my classmates got put on hold until fall grades came out. So thats probably what their doing.

Congrats to all of you.

I am really curious what their reservations are about my application.. My stats are higher than many getting further or may statuses. I have a lot of clinical experience (paid and volunteering) and tons of non-clinical volunteering. This makes me very pessimistic about this application season.

🙁

did anyone have trouble with the format of their supplemental essay? I can't seem to get my essay in paragraph form when verifying my application. Thanks!

Got the further status. IS 3.75/32 and from Richmond.. hmmm

I submitted the secondary 8/1 and have yet to be marked as complete. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, after 3 weeks of waiting, I sent the admissions office an email. I was complete by the end of the day.

Bad grade? Personal statement? Breaks in ecs? Med schools want dedication and long term committments in ecs

I heard subcommittees are for those who committed offenses or academic violations and u didnt tell them.

This is for paisley

You are going to get an interview. You are a strong candidate.

Can't be any offenses, I am squeaky clean.

I think I'll just have to wait until the ax comes down so I can ask them.

I know how you are feeling. VCU just emailed me a rejection letter, just when I was about to send them post baccelurate degree updates. I obtained a 100 hours of clinical service after graduation and I am going to be involved in a free-clinic program and research.

I emailed them asking if the status change is true and asked them to reconsider in lieu of my post graduate credientials. If it is insufficient clinical service, this should do it.

Just a few minuets after I posted I wanted the ax already. I got my rejection email. Creepy. Too close for comfort. Getting rid of my SDN account. I like my anonymity.

Well we can ask them what did it. The VCU people seem at least nice to tell you what went wrong and help you.

I wonder if the admissions committee will reconsider my application. Is there a chance? I think they made the decision prematurely. I was about to email them updates to my file that includes 100 hours of clinical service through scribe work and future 100s of hours that will include free-clinic community service and research that builds connections for patient care.

I really wanted to visit VCU. VCU was a top choice of mine. I actually was planning the following week to visit and tour the campus.

Guess today was a rejection day...rejected here as well :x

they are rejecting us just like that? Not even consider down the road? This is ridiculous. Its one thing for obvious "nos" but strongly qualified people who are at least maybes?

Get off your high horse.

I was not looking down on others who were getting interviews. I don't begrudge people's successes. I just think VCU has been acting ridiculously.

you have like 20 of the most recent 30 posts....

on another note, i submitted july 11th or 12th and haven't heard a peep. no status update.

Keep in mind the sheer number of applicants this year, and the admissions aren't based on numbers alone. It really is a crap shoot.

rejections suck 🙁 got one from tulane today...

for those of you who were rejected, when were u complete?

Send in the secondary today. I guess it'll be a while before I hear any news though

Maybe this entitled attitude came off in your personal statement/secondaries. I'm fairly certain the reason I was waitlisted and ultimately rejected after my only interview in my first app cycle was because I felt that I was over-qualified for the school, and it probably came off in my interactions on interview day, etc. Looking back on that experience, and how much I've learned since then, I would kill to be able to go to that school now. A little humility will get you a long way. Clearly there was something in your application they didn't like, and they did not think you were strongly qualified, whether it is obvious to your or not. Try to find out what it was so you can fix it for other schools.

Like I mentioned, I was just frustrated at the VCU admissions process, just like other frustrations people were expressing. I clarified I was not mad at other people for being successful. My personal statements and secondaries do not have an air of entitlement. My premed advisor would have let me know.

In case this helps anyone figure out their timeline...

App Completed: 7/20
"Further" Status: 8/1
Interview Invite: 8/15

Good luck guys!

I emailed VCU asking why I was incomplete on Monday. Still no email back. I emailed to somume@vcu.

THUMBS DOWN.
