2013-2014 Central Michigan University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I expect it will be similar.

CMED seems to have a strong in-state bias due to their mission, and, even if they don't explicitly favor in-state applicants, I think the tuition could discourage many out-of-state applicants ($33,536 IS versus $67,072 OOS).

Edit:
The following is explicitly stated in their FAQs:
All eligible U.S. and Canadian applications will be considered. CMED intends to have 80% in-state enrollment and 20% out-of-state enrollment.

By any chance do you know how many OOS applicants they interview?

No idea, sorry! Maybe someone in their inaugural class could weigh in?

The closest I've seen (as far as this year goes) is this information from their Twitter feed. My best logical guess is that ~20% of those interview invites would be for OOSers.

Admissions Update: Nearly 2000 AMCAS apps, 1142 verified, 975 secondary invites and 92 interview invites.

woww! i feel special right now 😀 i keep rechecking to make sure that the ii was not a mistake LOL

II this afternoon! IS, 3.7+, 30-33, complete 7/12

are those odds for this year? What was the acceptance statistic for last year's class?

I am still nervous because its a new school and I assume its going to be slightly harder than last year/more applicants.

Any idea how big their target size is this year?

ii today! IL resident. 3.3/32

What's your favorite and least favorite aspect of the curriculum, and most/least favorite aspect of the school and experience in general?
The curriculum is very unique. Unlike other schools, you can't just stay at home and choose to watch recorded lectures. Attendance is mandatory and that is due to the fact that the the curriculum revolves around problem- based and team-based learning. Problem-based learning is very engaging and helps you retain more info in my opinion. In addition to that, the early clinical training and exposure ( as early as the second week of your first semester) gives CMED an edge over most other schools.

In all honesty, I have no complaints about the school. It's a great school in a very friendly environment.

The inaugural class is composed of 64 students. Approximately 15 - 20% of the class is OOS. If I'm not mistaken, the total number of applicants last year was close to 2750 applicants.

As for the prospective class, there are 104 seats but a significant increase in the number of applicants is expected.

I was complete 8/8 and still have not heard anything! I did have a pending MCAT when I submitted my application which was scored 8/28 so I am wondering if they were holding off. Anyone have any opinion on whether or not I should follow up with a call or an email to see where I am at?

😕

II this week. MCAT 30ish GPA 3.6ish Masters degree, etc. First interview of the season, and pretty excited!

Nice! Where are you from and what day will you be interviewing?

First II ever! OOS, 29MCAT, 3.6 GPA, Master's in progress. Some good ECs and work experience. Not sure which day I'll be interviewing. Pretty excited!

Not any "concrete" ties. Grew up in a town called Sarnia which borders Port Huron MI. Have some family in Detroit, and Some on the Canadian side of the twin Soo's (northern Michigan). Spent many vacations in Michigan at Mackinaw Island. Very familiar with the state. Very happy to get an interview!

just got my II today. I have problems booking flights. Do DTW airport has shuttle to Mount Pleasant? Thanks for helping in advance

I don't know of a shuttle from DTW to Mount Pleasant. You might want to just rent a car if you're coming in through DTW; It's about a 2.5 hour drive.
If you fly into Saginaw, it's much closer. I'm still not sure if there is a shuttle, but there are certainly cabs that can get you to CMU without too much of a problem.

Alternatively, you could take a Greyhound from DTW to Mount Pleasant. I believe it's around $20-30.

Congratulations!

those of you with interviews, have you received your interview confirmation email? it says on the first email that we should be getting our confirmation email 2 weeks before the interview day but i havent received it yet..

my interview date is coming up

I have an interview this Friday (Sept. 20) and I got the confirmation/reminder email on Sept. 12.

Flying into Detroit on the 19th at 7pm for the interview date on the 20th. Would be willing to drive with someone if they wanted to chip in for gas and a bit for the rental car. As they said above, probably no shuttle from dtw to mt pleasant. So pm me if you are interested!

Kinda nervous for my first interview! Hope it goes well haha

Good luck to all the interviewees! I hope to join you soon 🙂

how are you guys preparing for this interview? Is there even a way to prepare lol

The interview was really fun. Nice MMI and they set it up so that it's pretty low stress. The facilities here and amazing, faculty seems very friendly, and a really intimate feel. I was impressed.

I agree with everything you said, wasn't sure what to expect with the MMI but it wasn't bad at all. I walked away very impressed with the facilities and the whole program, hope I hear back from them 🙂

For the poster above asking for how to prepare for the MMI, just know how to frame the question and present both sides before giving you answer. Besides that, just prepare for it like you would for a traditional interview.

For sure. I felt like it was all about the presentation and the vast majority of the interviewers were friendly so I don't know that your answer itself matter as much as thoughtfulness. (Everyone said this beforehand about MMIs in general but I was still nervous, lol.) I think a very cursory review of bioethics and the common cases could help in that you'd have some knowledge-based statements to fall back on if necessary but really I feel like interview answers (traditional or MMI) are stronger when based on life experiences and personal conviction.

The MSAR 2014 doesn't have the admissions data of the inaugural class. Does anyone know what it is (sorry if this is classified information! If it is, just let me know).

Whelp, cross this school off my list! Thanks for the info!

Anyone know the acceptance rate for people who interview?
Well, here are the numbers I could find for last year's interview cycle:

2765 applicants
~350 interviews offered
~78 accepted (not sure if this includes waitlist movement)
64 enrolled

So the overall acceptance rate for those interviewed was was ~22% last year.

Yikes... looking at those numbers makes me nervous! 😳

I cobbled this together from various web sources, so I can't guarantee those are the correct stats. It seems like a very high enrolled/accepted ratio, so I would have expected somewhere around 150 accepted (which would be a ~43% acceptance). But, who knows!

78 seems a little low to me...
Yeah. This is the only place I could find relevant numbers, so I somewhat question the veracity of the website. However, it was from March... so there may have been some significant movement after that. I'm just confused because it says 70 had accepted at that time? Maybe someone has more accurate/official numbers, because I agree that a 90% yield seems awfully high.

Hmm seems like those are the actual numbers. Guess they only accept students who are great fits for the school. Thanks for the link!

No problem! 👍

Does anyone have any more advice/feedback from their interview last weekend? It sounds like you all enjoyed it. I have mine this weekend, so I'm just starting to get really nervous...

For those who haven't been to the Mt. Pleasant area, I've been there and its got a very nice small-town rural feel to it. Definitely a "pleasant" place to live!

Best of luck to all those going; for those who've already been to the interview days, how did it go?

anyone else who has received interview invites yet?? I'm getting nervous on mine..completed secondary on 9/4.

hey so i have a question to anyone who has gone to the interview.

we just park at lot 20, put that parking identifier thing on the dashboard and walk to the health professional building? or the college of medicine building?

Are there signs leading us ? I just dont want to panic lol

theres like no real direction on where I am supposed to go

I'd guess the college of medicine building, but it looks like they're attached anyway. I'm sure there will be someone around to ask where the auditorium is.

The college of medicine building is the building closer to the street that your turned in from. Forgot the name. Was there last Friday. It's the closest door to you when you park in lot 20. The health professions building is a bit further away but if you do happen to venture in there you will probably know you are in the wrong place because no one will be there to greet you.

I've also heard nothing from this school. I have a pending MCAT score from 9/11/13.

I spoke to someone from admissions who said they don't go in any particular order but a committee is looking over applications now. She basically said be patient it's a slow process.
