2013-2014 Columbia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That's right. I must of looked at it wrong. 😵

So many conflicts. :annoyed:

Actually when I visited, I remember them saying that they likely were not going to have it on the 11th because of conflicts with many other schools. I guess we will have to wait and see to know for sure

When providing a post-interview update letter, should we address it to Dean Nicholas? Is it sufficient to just upload it via the website? Or should we also drop Dean Nicholas and/or our interviewer an email saying that we uploaded an update letter?

I addressed it to Dean Nicholas. And I don't think there's a need to email him personally; I'm pretty sure he reads them himself. He replied to one of my letters once.

Cool I was wondering the same. Will we get a confirmation?

Based on previous years, is it reasonable to assume that we'll hear a decision by Mar. 1? Does Columbia release all decisions at the same time, or just accepted ones first?

Judging by previous threads, those who are accepted may be called by their interviewers the day before. Last year the decisions went out on March 1st, but only for those who have been accepted I believe.

do you think decision would be released on a Saturday though?

As someone who never received an interview invite, I am eager to see Columbia's rejection email. What will it say?

Will they, like Cornell, tell me they had x1000 applicants and could only interview x100?
Or will they be like Mt Sinai, telling me they carefully reviewed my application and assure me that I am super-duper qualified but just unfortunate?
Or perhaps they will be like Georgetown, and tell me to go f--- myself.

Can't wait!

EDIT: Dean Nicholas hopes "that you gained admissions in another medical school." Isn't that sweet?

I was wondering if all the communications appeared under the communications tab? It seems like one of mine is missing.

Not always. I received a reply for my post-interview thank you letter that did not show up under the communications tab.

Any chance we could hear earlier than the 28th?

I just received an e-mail from psadmissions, heart dropped, then I realized it was to make sure our info is up to date on AMCAS.

I haven't received any such email. Any chance you could share the text?

Me too! I started reading it and it sounded just like rejection emails I've received. Very passive and avoiding the point at the beginning. Hopefully the real decisions come soon.

Thank you for your application to Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. We are nearing the end of our application review and will soon notify applicants of our decisions.

We are sending you this email to request that you check and update your information with AMCAS, save

[email protected]

to your email address book, and make sure you are able to log into our online application system

Then it says to email with any questions.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN! Sorry for yelling but I was caught off guard. I thought they didn't release until March... What's going on here?

Yeah, that email gave me a mini freakout as well haha.

I don't think this email is that weird or unexpected. We're only 10 days from March. It makes sense that the school might want to make sure they have all our updated contact info.

They really had to start the email with "Thank you for your application to Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons." It sounds like a rejection letter :S

I definitely thought it was a rejection email. I braced myself for the worst. Only 10 more days...

Oh wow, heart attack just now with that "update your info" email!

Has anyone in the post-Christmas interviews heard from Bassett yet? If we got this Columbia email does this mean that we got rejected by Bassett?

Slowly starting to regret not sending a post-interview update letter 🙁

Just for future curiosity, what would count as something "remarkable?" A publication? A research presentation?

Yep, that would certainly be extraordinary. But I think update letters do help (as long as you've done new stuff since your AMCAS, of course).

Am I correct in assuming that everyone who sent a thank-note post-interview received a letter from the Dean saying something like "we'll keep you strongly in mind?" Is the content of the letter in any way predictive of final decisions?

I think this came up at one point earlier in the thread (it's a little hazy at this point). It seems like many, but not all, people who send a thank you letter receive a letter from the Dean with essentially the same wording. However, based on previous years, getting a response doesn't seem to be necessarily indicative of your admissions decision. We're almost there! Just a little more waiting left!

Past threads indicate that it is not indicative.

for this cycle, yes.

when do you think decisions will be out

2012-2013: Acceptance calls to some starting 2/28 with an update to portal (and an email sent to check it) on 3/1.
2011-2012: Acceptance calls to some starting 3/1 with acceptance packets sent via overnight/priority post the day before.

I'm not sure if calls are made to everyone since they're made by the interviewers themselves and not everyone may have the time, but in any case, I'm thinking we can expect something at right around 2/28 or 3/1 :scared:

Does anyone know how much movement the waitlist has traditionally/how large it is? Not looking for exact number I just know there are some schools that are notorious for not having any movement or having a large unranked list with little transparency.
