2013-2014 Columbia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did you interview w Dr. hutcherson?
Yeah I think he mentioned it earlier in the thread.

I think it is pretty silly... Time consuming for the committee and stressful for applicants. We are in 2014... just email >.<

Me too. But I got a call a few weeks completely unexpectedly in the middle of the morning. Made my day and week and month thus far. Luckily, I didn't check SDN and get my heart pounding every time my phone vibrated. Why.

Haha, I guess they can be sweet sometimes. I just wish all schools were as transparent as others (why not just tell us an exact day/time???).

One call reported on SDN does not equal one call made to candidates. I ask this in all earnestness, what percentage of the 1000+ of us that were interviewed are on the board this afternoon? My guess is that it is a tiny percent. Engaging in some idle speculation of my own...while I think they are likely to make more acceptance calls, I am sure many more than 1 call has be made to-date.

Well, obviously (no offense meant). I'd say the SDN population is closer to 15% of total. And if you look at last years thread, like 10 people posted at once about getting those first calls. Anywayyyyyyy we will know soon enough! Sending positive vibes to everyone else on tenterhooks!

Wolf, can you give more details about your call? What else did he/she say?
Thanks
Sure no problem. She called from a 212 number, so I had no idea who it was. She introduced herself as Dr. Hutcherson, and then I immediately recognized her voice (Those who interviewed with her will understand). She told me that she was delighted to offer me admission for the class 0f 2018, and she said some other things, I don't really recall because I was hyperventilating. She said that an official email would follow, along with a status change on the portal, and she mentioned a link that would appear so I could confirm the acceptance of their offer. That was it basically! The call lasted 2 minutes and 42 seconds, I screenshotted it on my iPhone and now it's my background. Cringey, I know, but oh well. Hope this helps!

I know that reading from last year's thread that calls are also interviewer dependent. I know that no one seemed to have gotten a call from my interviewer (or at least no one posted about it). Some people got no calls and were accepted later on.

Any NYC residents get anything by snail mail today? Intra-Manhattan mail frequently arrives next day. I got nada.

Not sure if a blessing or a curse but I'm on the other side of the world right now until March 2nd. Still checking SDN like a freak but can't receive any phone calls lol 🙁 good luck to everyone over these next few days!

Seems last year the portal was updated the evening after letters were mailed, although that was Mar 1. @RocDiva4040 do you have any predictions?

haha. I actually haven't paid attention to this pattern. I just assume that today the majority of calls will go out, some people will receive the packet in the mail, and by Friday I think everyone will know, so the portal will be updated by then. I hope the portal is updated by tonight. That would be lovely.

I know this is driving me crazy! I hope the torture ends today lol.

Thanks for calling! I figured they would say something like that though. We just have to wait.... *looks at the clock*

Yeah i figured there is no harm in asking they know we are very anxious waiting for our decisions haha.

haha thanks for trying 🙂 i'm going to get off SDN... it has been a very unproductive morning

Is there anyway to tell how many of us are viewing this thread? I'm accessing sdn from the iphone app so some functionality is limited. I am just curious because, obviously, the more of us on here, the more likely that news (e.g., receipt of calls; receipt of snail mail) will be reported.

hahaha omg i just got a call from a number i didnt know and my heart jumped and i pick up with my heart racing and its a telemarketer....

I just started watching this thread (to keep from refreshing) and my heart jumped when I got an email about your message..about freaking out over nothing... :smack:

Edit: I can't do this, unsubscribing 🙂

Why don't schools understand that making us stress and suffer like this will probably just give us a negative impression of their school? And hence make us less likely to choose them if accepted...

I see what you're saying, but this school hasn't done anything wrong yet. They have told us that the earliest they would let us know is March 1 and we're still in February.

I only have a problem with the schools when they tell you one thing and do another (see: Stanford this cycle).

Just got the curriculum update email from Cornell and nearly fell out of my seat. I think my heart's done enough cardio the past few days for the whole week.

There is a way, but I'm also on my phone. I think they're watching us.

anyone check their snail mail?

Do you actually get mail this early in the day? Wow, my postwoman doesn't start her route until 1pm. I don't get mail until 3pm. I enormously respect the work of postal workers. Just to keep us distracted, a question for the group: do you leave a holiday card or a holiday $ for your postperson? I have debated the merits and protocol of this with others but never got any consensus.

This is a great idea, I can't believe I have never thought of this - I dunno about $ but at least the card!

any chance itll take a letter a day to get from columbia to one of the outer boroughs? probably a long shot and probably more like 2-3 days but soooo hoping it might magically be a day 🙁

When I mail from Manhattan to the outer boroughs it usually takes 2 days --- arrives the second day after I drop it. Given the report that letters went out Monday, I would suspect you could receive a letter as early as today. Just speculating.

Should we all temper our anxiety and reexamine our expectations for today. Our expectation that today will be the day is informed but just 2 sources of info.
1. Post by 1st yr med student who received email indicating that letters were dropped Monday. While I sincerely believe her/him, we don't know if office logistics actually allowed for the posting of mail on Monday
2. Post by one student that he received a call. This could be aberration

I am confident that all decisions have been made and we will know by Friday evening, but is there really any good evidence to suggest that calls will be placed today or snail mail to be received today? How much of this expectation that today is the day is the result of wishful thinking vs. actual good data?

Checked the snail mail that came today (note: I'm in Boston) and it consisted of only supermarket ads and an letter from my undergrad's alumni fund asking for a donation. Another day it is, then.

Looks like we are waiting until Friday. :corny:

Ugh this wait is soooo annoying. I mean if they already know...just go ahead and email us. I don't understand.

Agreed...it's so frustrating to know that they know but won't tell us.

While I am also frustrated, we should keep in mind what someone said earlier: they never told us we would know by now so I don't really blame them. @obviouslyteal was kind enough to let us know that the letters had been sent out and that we should expect calls soonish, but I don't think we should be upset if we dont know until Friday. Most schools probably know long before they inform students, we just have the (dis)advantage of hearing earlier through the grapevine

yea...and i dont understand what the point is of this whole dragged out thing.....like why send letters a few days before and then spend a few days making phone calls before letting everyone know....what does anyone even gain from this prolonged anxiety ridden wait....how does it even help them? its been long enough....

True it's not really their fault. This whole process is just kinda nightmarish :scared:

I didn't even apply here, but I'm anxious just reading these posts! Then again, that may have something to do with the fact that I'm still waiting from several places as well... :nailbiting:

Good luck to you all, hope they let you know soon!

The MS1 actually posted about the letters being sent yesterday (not Monday), so they were probably sent yesterday.

Rejected today pre-II. A very nice rejection too, I might add.

Do you mind me asking if it was an email or status update?

Both, received an automated email letting me know.

Edit: Just to be clear, my "status" is unchanged. However under "Communications" there is the "P&S Admissions Decision," which is the email I got.
