2013-2014 Columbia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
how can a wait-list be "unranked"? do they accept students at random off the wait-list then?

I think in general, most schools, even though they say their waitlist is unranked, use a two-tier system in which waitlisters are separated into a higher tier and a lower one. However, I think that within those two groups, everyone is unranked. The reasoning behind this is that schools are trying to build the most diverse classes possible, and because of that, having a formally ranked waitlist would make things too rigid.

Does anyone know when we get our financial aid packages?

Yeah, i called the admissions office and they basically just said they look back at everyone's applications again instead of just picking from a pre-determined rank. The way I see it is if someone with your skill, hobby, ethnicity, or what have you, drops out of the running, then they're looking at you to fill that spot.

Does anyone know if they also had an unranked waitlist last year??

So no one has had any personalization yet? Maybe they don't do it anymore?

Edit: finally got my own letter. No personalization :/

Was anyone else surprised at the word choice ("survivived") in their acceptance letter?
I had no idea my life had been in danger because of application to Columbia. :wtf:

Are they all worded identically? (e.g. " ... you are a very highly regarded applicant, ...")

Anyway, I officially withdrew today. Best of luck to everyone who decides to stay on the WL. :luck:

Wait I don't have a "very"! I just have "you are a highly regarded applicant"!

Ditto. I think it's possible some people have "very", because the letter that I got after I sent in my thank you note had "very strongly in mind", while others just had "strongly in mind".

I don't think it really matters guys why would they waste their time trying to let you know so cryptically that you are actually a higher priority than other applicants when they could just come out and tell you if it was that important to them that you know.

Use your head guys it's Columbia University not the illuminati

 Maybe we are reading too much into it.

Scarlett my dear, the wait-list was a mistake... because you got in!! 🙂

Does anyone know what time revisit starts and what activities will we participate in?

@plumazul probably just misread it or mistyped

Nope, that's exactly what it said, but, it's from the MSTP office so they obviously use a different form letter with slightly different wording. And it was just a form letter (down to the fake bitmapped signatures)

According to our Revisit Leader: "This year's revisit is a one-day event. Registration starts at 9:30am and we have events planned until 10:30pm. Although not officially part of the Revisit schedule, there will be a social event planned for the night. If you're coming from out of town, you'll have the option to stay with a host. Hope that helps!"

Has anyone made a fb page yet?

Also, are there any married people that were accepted?

I was accepted and am married...assuming you are too? Also, is your username a reference to your undergrad by chance?

The revisit leaders made a facebook page already.

As far as letters, don't read too much into the wording. Every year people try to analyze it and the only known thing is all versions result in acceptances and rejections.

Another Columbia first-year (and Revisit Leader) here! I'm super excited about Revisit; you're going to have a great time. We want to make sure everyone is aware of the Class of 2018 Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1412127799039118/ There are a bunch of current students in the group ready and willing to answer any questions you have. We still use our Facebook group as a class all the time, so go ahead and join yours now!

Hello everyone,
Longtime lurker here. I was just invited for a second interview at Columbia after being waitlisted, what exactly does that mean/entail?
Sounds like you are being considered for an acceptance off the waiting list. Congratulations.

Wtfffff. Great more reason to freak out now. Anyone else receive the same thing?

That's amazing! Congrats! Did you receive a phone call or email?

Hello everyone,

I have no idea what it means for medical schools, but the same thing happened to my friend who was waitlisted at Harvard. It turns out the school was highly interested in her, but there were some issues with her initial interview (she came off as too shy/not confident), so they gave a second interview to see if it was actually a problem.

Congrats on the second interview!

2nd interviews were a thing that columbia did in the past, predominantly during the time when Dean Franz was in charge. The vast majority of ppl they accept off the waitlist will NOT have a 2nd interview. They might even just want some clarification or a reevaluation.

Congrats! Ok, can you please tell us if you sent in a letter of interest or letter of intent? If so, when did you send these documents in? Pre-interview? Post-interview? or Post-waitlist? Your response would greatly aid in alleviating some anxiety.

I sent a letter of intent a week after being waitlisted and got nothing but a confirmation email :/ so congrats on your second interview!!! It can't be a bad thing if they want to see you again.

Congratulations! This is definitely an interesting development.
If you don't mind me asking, are you from New York or currently living in the area? It seems strange that they'd ask anyone but a New Yorker to fly back out to NYC.

Thanks!

2nd interview here too. Sent an update/letter of interest post-interview, but I didn't send anything post-waitlist. I live a long ways away from NY, so I will be flying back. P&S is definitely my first choice school!

How did you hear back? I have yet to receive my wait-list letter in the mail...

Did you or @Mac Attack5464 get a personalization on your waitlist letters (i.e. crossing out of a name, etc)?

From previous threads, @mmmcdowe said that after Dean Nicholas took over, the second interview hasn't been the main factor in being selected off the waitlist so I wouldn't sweat this too much.

for those of you who uploaded LOIs since being WLed - did you get a confirmation/response signed by the general admissions office or dean nicholas? (either way probably doesnt mean much but im just curious...)
