2013-2014 Columbia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This has probably been addressed already, but how long is Columbia's WL? Is it like 600-800 people?

That was what I have been told. Not sure how many people are still on the WL but I would assume that it would still be very large. Any big WL movement yet?

Nope...Probably starting next week? Though this might be a busy time for them with graduation and possibly prepping for the next cycle

True of every school haha.

Nah but last year movement didn't start until like Mid-June or something (checked the thread a while ago). They could have their stuff together earlier this year, who knows

not true i know quite a few ppl who got off the waitlist last year and they all heard anywhere from midmay-beginning of june. seems like very little movement occurs after mid june its prob just ppl who were committed to columbia but then got off a waitlist somewhere else and withdrew so the waitlist at columbia moves a tiny bit. i believe most wl offers are made by the end of may and latest by mid june (any current students please correct me if im wrong but thats the impression i got from speakign with current students who were WLers)

True I guess it would all depend on the type of people that withdraw and if they feel comfortable accepting someone else right away or not. Since the waitlist is unranked and all

The wait list movement has definitely started. I know a friend who was accepted off the wait list.

I just spoke with the admissions office and was told that they haven't begun accepting, which in assuming means post may-15th. Was this before then or for mstp?

Some SDNers on this thread have posted saying they've been accepted off the waitlist before May 15th (I'm assuming it's been those applicants who have had second interviews).

I called admissions today and they said some people have come off the wait list but the majority of people haven't yet.

It was for MD.

Isn't that because there are 800 people on the waitlist?

Getting off the waitlist is as hard as getting accepted right away

Yea that was kinda unclear the way I worded that. No what I meant was he said the bulk of people that are going to come off of the wait list have not yet, and he also said they could be pulling people off the wait list all the way until the start of classes.

yea i think she means the majority of ppl who are going to be accepted off the waitlist by the end of this cycle...not the majority of the ppl on the wl obviously since only a fraction will actually get in....no one said it was easier to get off the wl...

Thank you for clarifying that!

Random question but does anyone know if an orientation schedule is posted anywhere?

Cant wait🙂

To everyone wondering if there is wait list movement, etc, though they are "closed groups" basically most if not all medical schools have facebook groups which they or a student-representative administrate. The numbers in P&S's 2018 group have waxed and waned over the last several weeks. It was up to around 160, which actually seems like a lot (are 90+ percent of students really on facebook?) and then decreased to 150 and is now again at 153 or whatever.

Congrats on making a decision! And congrats to everyone else making or approaching decisions these days!

I don't believe that orientation's schedule has been fully ironed out yet, but it will begin on August 10 and will last for a week. There is also an optional 3 day hike (entitled P-SOOP) led by some of my intrepid classmates that will happen a little bit earlier in August. Orientation should be a blast! Judging from past years, it should include, among other things, Broadway shows, time in Central Park, an all-New York scavenger hunt, potentially a boat cruise, and certainly lots of free food.

As plans firm up, details should be posted at this site: http://psclub.columbia.edu/orientation

I don't feel like that's a good metric to use since some of the members will be admins, and often current students will join to post information as well.

Nothing today either?

Strange... I stalked the facebook group, and it seems that a handful (like 4-5) people joined the group within the past 2 days. But some of them seemed to be current P&S students, so I'm not sure if there has been some movement after May 15th.

Yeah honestly going by the Facebook page would be inefficient. People could join the FB group at any time no matter when they were accepted or make a decision.

Its moving slowly along.

based on previous years do you happen to know by when the majority of wait list movement has occurred? for instance are they usually almost done taking from the waitlist by the end of the may/beginning of june? just trying to figure out when to stop waiting and start moving on...thanks!

Mmmcdowe is currently in the middle of graduating so it may take him a while to respond. 🙂

Most movement occurs by mid June traditionally, but trickles on to a day before med school starts sometimes.

Should we start giving up hope? In past years, it seemed like several people got in and posted on the thread. This year, there have been very few people (at least on sdn) saying anything and it's almost June. This is very strange to say the least.

If I don't hear anything by the end of the week I might. I need to find a place to live soonish for the school at which I'm currently holding an acceptance

from what I remember from reading through last year's thread, the bulk of movement wasn't until mid-June.

What sort of responses do applicants usually receive after uploading an update letter? A quick email of acknowledgement from the office? A personalized email from the Dean? Silence?

I've gotten both a standard email signed either by the office or by the Dean.

Can anyone comment on the health insurance they offer? I'm wondering if it would be cheaper to go with that or buy my own insurance from the state exchange where I might receive financial assistance

Insurance is probably better than the exchange, but it doesn't include dental in the basic package. Then again, the exchange was just starting when I bought my insurance.

Waitlist movement is happening, people just aren't posting on the open forum about it. If you call they will tell you what they say every year, waitlist movement is "unusually slow".

Ugh, that's really tough to hear. 🙁 Would you say it would be best to move on if we haven't heard anything at this point/are people at admissions open to very briefly discussing chances of getting off the waitlist?

Moving on is a personal choice, but waitlist movement is continuing. No they aren't typically very open, partially because the admissions staff has no clue and the dean, the only member of the adcom actually in the offices, is busy with his own schedule.

Has anyone called recently to ask about waitlist movement? If you don't want to post about calling (because of paranoia), you can PM me and I can post it up here without your SDN handle.
