2013-2014 Loyola University (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello all! I'm hoping a current student can offer some advice, but I will gladly take it from anyone here. I am currently on the alternate list, which is a shame because Loyola is my top choice and I felt like I connected really well with my interviewers. Because I got such a great vibe from the school, I sent a letter of intent immediately following my interview in late February. Does anyone think sending a 2nd letter of interest/intent would be worth it as May 15th approaches? On the one hand, I have heard that Loyola loves students who show enthusiasm and sincere interest in the school. On the other hand, I've seen a few adcoms comment on SDN how LOIs are pretty useless unless you have something significant to update your application with.

Dear M.MD, I feel obligated to respond bc you're rocking my future initials 😉
Anyway, I distinctly remember Viviana telling me during our one-on-one that Loyola likes to feel the love from its candidates. The dating analogy got used a lot during season!
Also, my thought is, what do you have to lose? If I were in your shoes and Loyola was really my top choice, Id take the risk. But, that's just me. GL!

Was a difficult decision but withdrew my acceptance and dean's scholarship today. Hope this goes to one of you guys! Good luck!

I agree with Mmedran. At this point you have nothing to lose but a lot to gain if it works. Good Luck!

It was a very tough decision to make, since I really did love Loyola, but I withdrew my acceptance today. Hope my spot goes to one of you SDN hopefuls - good luck to all of you!

Also @M.MD: when I called another school's admissions office last week and asked about LOIs, the admissions officer said sending one at this point has more weight than if you sent one earlier just because it shows you are still interested after hearing back from every school. Plus waitlist movement starts right after May 15th so it doesn't hurt to have your application fresh on their minds.

Just wondering, did anyone get any mail or an email or anything asking us to confirm that we will be attending loyola? The only email that I received was the on a few weeks ago that was meant to see where we stood with the school, but I haven't received anything that allowed me to fully commit to the school. Really don't wanna lose my spot, that would kinda suck

I just emailed them an hour ago and tried calling but the office was closed. I never received an email asking me to state my intent to register. I will call first thing in the morning to verify.

Anyone else know when the official May 15th deadline is? Would it be before 12am? I emailed to withdraw from my other acceptances at around 4pm today. I tried calling Stritch to confirm my intent to matriculate but the office was closed so I emailed them instead. Am I fine?

I didn't call/email on the 15th because I figured the survey from a couple of weeks ago would suffice (since we provided our name), but I emailed today regardless. I heard back instantly and was told that in the coming weeks we'll receive matriculation info and that there wasn't anything else to worry about at this time. So if you responded to the survey and clicked on the "I plan to matriculate at the SSOM" button, you should be fine! That's all I did!

Is it safe to say that the waitlist movement has now ended? Does anyone who goes there have any idea? Maybe from talking with the admissions office?

I spoke with Tony in the admissions office and he told me they would be calling students every day for the next three weeks giving acceptances. I don't know how convinced I am of this though. I would imagine a lot more people would be posting their acceptances on SDN if they were really calling students every day. :/ I also tried asking how many spots were available and if they could disclose how many people were ahead on the waitlist but he couldn't say.

No waitlist movement in the past couple of weeks? :/

Unless there has been movement and no one has been posting?

Is anyone still looking for a roommate? I posted on fb but haven't really gotten a response. Please PM if you are interested in finding a place at oak or forest park!! Thank you!!

I was accepted off the alternate list this morning by phone call. I am in a total state of shock right now. That was my one and ONLY acceptance this cycle, and it comes on June 18th, more than a year after I started this process. I'm so humbled, and so excited to be attending my top choice school. I loved Stritch on my interview day, and I can't wait to meet all of my classmates!

Hi guys. Been lurking on this forum incessantly for months and months. I wanted to keep hope alive and tell everyone that I just received a phone call from admissions and was taken off the alternate list... I am truly in shock and overwhelmed with emotion. I love this school and cannot describe my relief. There is obviously still WL movement.

Did anyone else initially have trouble setting up an account with LOCUS? It's telling me to use the PAM to set one up, but when I click on it, I don't see an option for new users.

For anyone looking to make a LOCUS account, here are the instructions. Your universal ID will be your first initial and your last name. Good luck!

Log into the portal using your universal ID, which is 'jsmith' and your temporary password which consists of your first name initial + last name initial + date of birth. For example, if your name is Joe Smith and your birth date is May 12, 1987 then your temporary password is js051287. If you have already logged in to LOCUS before, continue using your existing password.

Did anyone find the match list for this year? I could only find the match list for 2012.

How long after everyone's acceptance calls did you receive your acceptance packet in the mail?

What are my chances at this school?
cGPA: 3.603
sGPA: 3.45
MCAT: 31
I am currently a junior at Loyola Chicago, applying for the 2016 cycle.

Clinical Volunteer: I have been volunteering at a hospital since the Fall and have accumulated 50+ hours. MY volunteer coordinator is also writing me one of my rec letters.

Physician shadowing: Shadowed a Pediatric Surgeon this past winter break, accumulated 48 hours. Shadowed Pediatric Neurosurgeon for one day (because he's a big time doctor in Chicago and was really busy all the time-- is also the head of my research lab, my PI works under him)

Research: Have volunteered my time to pediatric brain tumor research since Spring of my sophomore year. Very involved in the research and will continue until I graduate.

Nonclinical volunteer activities: Active member of Amnesty international club at my school. Tutored refugee children my freshman year. Led tutoring group of underprivileged hs students for NSCS. Currently PR for a pre-med club.

Employment: Currently tutor sociology 2 hours/week since January. Scribed at peds office summer after freshman year for two months 40hrs/week

I sent in a letter of interest/intent near the May 15th deadline for acceptances since that's usually when waitlist movement starts to pick up. I'm not sure if that had any effect whatsoever on my eventual acceptance but I think it's worth a shot. Make sure your letter isn't just fluff - update on any new activities, and remind the school specifically why you're a good fit for the program. Good luck!
