2013-2014 Oakland University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got the call yesterday! 🙂

I really loved OUWB on interview day. Great facilities, great atmosphere, and very friendly people.

I could not agree more! OUWB blew my mind. Especially the hospital! If anyone is unsure about whether or not to attend this interview, GO! Unless you've been accepted to your number 1 of course ; )

Out of curiosity... Does anyone know how many interviews there were between October 11 and 25th? Trying to see if there's a chance October 25th people will get reviewed next week.

At my interview there were ~25 people. Assuming that they interview a couple days a week, then probably 50-125?

Here's two relevant tweets:

Starting to make offers (calls). Interviewees from Aug 30, Sep 6 & 13 are in pool. Most from Sep 27 are too. Some from Oct 4.

Just started making calls. Adcom has reviewed all apps through the 10/4 interview day and about half from 10/11.

So it's probably fair to assume that some people from the 10/25 pool will get reviewed, but I wouldn't 100% expect a decision by then.

According to this there have been 166 interviews completed as of October 30th. So my figure is probably way too high.

Even then, attend and you'll have a new #1. But seriously, OUWB is really awesome.

Has anyone joined the facebook group yet? It's about a 90% chance I'm attending here and I wasn't sure if I should still join or if it's only for 100% committed students?

Oh ouch. Also on hold here; guess I'll probably be rejected soon...

Those of you who were put on hold: Did you find out via email or checking your online status?

Via email. I believe my online status says the same thing, though.

Hello folks! I withdrew my interview at Oakland scheduled for Nov. 26th. I really hope one of you fine guys and gals gets that spot. Best of luck to all of you!

Been complete since mid august and nothing, worth it to call ?

The rate of interview invites is definitely slowing though. I think there still might be some hope, especially since people are starting to withdraw their IIs.

My secondary and application was complete on Oct. 28th. Has anyone who submitted the secondary around then heard anything back yet??? Also, I know their website says they screen applicants, I wonder what their requirements are!

.....it hasn't even been two weeks for you yet haha. Not to mention you were marked "complete" later in the cycle, so the sheer volume of applications they need to review is pretty significant. I haven't heard a peep since I was complete on August 26th (and even then is certainly not early), and I know there are quite a few people who have been complete even longer and haven't heard anything, either. 😛

I would give it at least 20 days until you hear back from them . At this point you can't do anything about the fact that you applied late. I do know they are still handing out invites though so you definitely still have a chance. Just hang tight . Obviously it's helpful if you apply early, but as long as your complete they will see your file, and if they like you they'll invite you.

For anyone wondering -- I recently attended interviews at Oakland....and fell in LOVE with the school. I had low-to-moderate expectations for a new school that didn't even graduate a class yet, but after the day spent with the faculty and looking at the campus, it would be hard to not be in love with it. The ONLY issue is the huge price tag to attend, but hopefully Oakland feels the same level of love and supplies me with some scholarship dollars. If you're debating on going to this interview, you would be doing yourself a disservice NOT going!

Glad you enjoyed the OUWB. If you have any additional questions about the school please PM.

Hey everyone! So I was accepted on 10/15 and wanted to know if anyone else who was accepted has received any scholarship information yet. I don't know when I should expect to know if I will be receiving money here and figured I'd see if any SDN-ers had the answer 🙂 Love this school, but still trying to decide where to go for sure and I could be easily persuaded by $$. Also, did everyone receive an additional letter from Dean Folberg a few weeks after receiving their acceptance letter?!? I thought that was really nice...

I have an interview for this school in November. I recently got accepted at Rosalind Franklin. I am not sure how I should compare the two and if I should still go to the interview. Can anyone tell me the best way to compare the schools? I am tight on budget, so just want to save some money. Thanks!

I don't know if you had your interview yet, but I'd for sure attend the OU interview if I were you. Based off of my limited knowledge about Rosalind, I'd say students seem to be happier at OU. Additionally, Rosalind is an old school that remains "rank not published" while OU is new so it's unranked for a reason (not like rankings matter much, if at all). Also, despite OU being a new school, it at least has an established "alumni-like" group that can help with professional development and establishing connections for residency due to its exclusive partnership with Beaumont. 🙂 location matters too, so if one is closer to family/friends that might factor into it as well.

Could someone already interviewed comment on a "team based exercise" before the interview? What is it?

The TBL part of the interview is supposed to mimic an actual TBL session. All adcom members leave the room so it has no impact on your application, simply meant to expose you to the teaching technique. Nothing to stress about.

Thanks Kinch! I appreciate your help.🙂

No problem, good luck at the interview.

Going to release my January interview. Hopefully it goes to someone who really needs it!

I was accepted here 11/6, interviewed 10/25. I was very impressed by the school on interview day.

Does Oakland wait till march when they start formulating the wait list to send out post interview rejections? Also are there people who get offers past the initial/second time the committee has reviewed their file (prior to the waitlist forming), or is it just the recently interviewed that get calls?...... To all my fellow applicants who love OUWB and are still waiting to get called: "Oakland probably loves reading your application so much they aren't ready to let you go into the yes pile yet", Good luck🙂

I think that they have begun sending out post-interview rejections. I was told during Interview Day that OUWB wouldn't waste your time if they know that they won't give you an offer of admittance. There were a couple people here that interviewed early on and did not get an offer until one of the later adcom meetings.

Still hoping for my call. I interviewed in September 🙁

Congrats to everyone who has gotten the call!!

I interviewed early October and got the acceptance call Wednesday!

Anyone know how likely it is to get any sort of scholarships from Oakland? Private schools tend to have more money to give, but are way more expensive.

Hi everyone! Just withdrew from my interview set for November 26th too! Accepted at home! Hopefully someone who wants it will snag it! Sounds like a nice school - seems super organized and associated with a great hospital. It just ain't in the Chi 😉 Good luck everyone!

Anyone flying into Detroit airport today willing to split for rental car or taxi?
I have my interview on the 26th and I am just going a day early and coming back on 27th. Let me know!

Also, I have never been to michigan before so is it a good idea to get a rental instead of taxi?

I interviewed on October 11. I really hope I get in this school. It's my only interview so far. I'm kind of desperate. It would take a lot of pressure off me!

Yeah I would get a rental for a day if I were you. Taxis are expensive!

Yeah the taxi system in michigan is pretty bad. If you get a number for a taxi you'll be alright (one will come within an hour) but it's not the best.

Plus DTW is a bit far from the school so a taxi will be pricey.

M1 here. I'm not sure how many scholarships are given out each year, but they are definitely giving out substantial scholarships to attract students. I received a scholarship offer in April (I think that's when they start coming out; I was admitted in October). Just be sure your financial aid information is in before decisions are being made (preferably in January). Also, FYI, there is no scholarship application. Everyone is considered based on their primaries/secondaries and financial aid info.

Thanks for your input.

Also, could you (or perhaps anyone else on this thread) describe the interview experience? Stress level? Overall difficulty? How was the TBL exercise? Any other insight?

Thanks again!!

Mine was very conversational. Honestly the only stress you will feel will be that which you bring into it. Trust me the faculty are excited to meet you, they aren't trying to put you through the ringer.

TBL exercise is just for you. It's not meant to be difficult just give you an idea of one of the methods OUWB uses.

There really isn't anything else I can think of if you have any other questions let me know. Shoot I forgot to mention I am a current M1.

The interview was essentially a conversation about my teaching and love for crafting! Super easy!! At the end the interviewer suggested incorporating a crafting corner into their student lounge. Made me feel at home!! Have fun!
No one is rating your performance on TBL so just have fun. It is for you to get a glimpse of their teaching style. NO stress, promise ; )
