2013-2014 Rutgers University - NJMS Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
June 14, 2013
wait so you sent your primary application with your MCAT in early June--why didn't you fill out a secondary--wasn't your primary application verified?

If you don't mind me asking what were your #s like? and were your IS or OOS?

I'm assuming they didn't even offer an interview?--that's bizarre...

can any current students speak about the curriculum? what do you like/dislike? what does a typical day look like (how long are you in class, etc)? Thank you!

also, i know NJMS is P/F but does anyone know if they do internal ranking during the first two years?

Yes, they internally rank and everyone learns their quartile later on.

Just got a phone call from Dean Heinrich for a full tuition scholarship! Ugh, choosing a school is going to be so hard now...

Wow, that's incredible! Congratulations!

That definitely complicates things for you. Hopefully I'm not being presumptuous here, but I would imagine NJMS is probably the one school you've ruled out at this point given your other options.

Is NJ your home state? I'm a NJ resident and got a letter last week of a "sample" of my fin aid package and it was $40k in loans -____-

I got this as well. It's starting to look like I'll be paying full-freight anywhere I go.

Yeah, also received this too.. that cued me in that I wasn't likely to see any scholarship money. Lame.

Thanks! But ugh, yeah, this makes things so complicated.

Yep, NJ is my home state. I also got the $40K loan letter about a week ago, but Dean Heinrich called me about an hour ago telling me I got this scholarship. Dean Heinrich said it was a new scholarship made by the chancellor this year, and the chancellor asked the admissions office to forward a few applications to him. He said the chancellor just decided who to give the scholarships to, and he added that they're giving out 2 full tuition scholarship this year.

Does anyone know what waitlist movement is like for NJMS? If update letters/letters of intent are encouraged/recommended? Thanks!

Has anyone decided what they are doing for housing? My partner and I do NOT want to pay that amount of money to live on campus. We also have a dog, so it's not even an option. I've looked at society hill, and it would be smarter to buy a townhouse then rent one. Too bad we are going to be broke med students.

I have found Ivy hill apartments to be reasonable, though bus or car is needed for commute, as it is 3 miles away....In Newark. (Next to Seton hill).

I've been an observer for a long time and I really should join the fb group. I'm just waiting until I hear from my last post interview school, which should be by tomorrow.

If anyone's interested... (It's missing about 15 entries)

Hey guys! Congrats to all that have been accepted and who are going to attend!

My friend is looking for an extra roommate for his three person apartment and he asked me to post on SDN for incoming students to see. Here is his facebook post from the NJMS 2018 page:

Hey guys, current MS1 here. A second year and I are looking for a third roommate for our Harrison apartment. We have lived here for the past year and are really interested in staying in our current place.

-Rent is 450/month with about 50/month in utilities (approx half of what you will pay living in 180)
-NJMS is <10 min by car, with several public transportation options (I am also interested in carpooling next year!)
-Path train is <10 min walking distance (aka easy NYC/Hoboken access)
-Plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, and other amenities very close to the apartment (restaurant, Portuguese bakery, and convenience store on the same block). There is also a quick chek that you can walk to in 5 minutes!
-Very safe and family friendly area (enjoy talking long walks with your stack of hundreds at 2am? no problem!)

Bonus: Living with a future MS2 and MS3 is guaranteed* to get you straight A's next year!

*Guarantee is not guaranteed

Please contact me at [email protected] if interested. Would be more than happy to have you come and check the place out!

Anyone know the chances of getting in off the priority alternate list?

Hey guys,

I'm also a current MSI and I absolutely love NJMS. I interviewed twice, the first time during my senior year of college (I had pretty average scores 31 and 3.6 with no lab experience and tons of clinical and extracurriculars) and I ended up wait-listed here as well as at Drexel, SOM and RWJ. I loved NJMS and sent them a few update letters. I reached out to Dr. Heinrich around May and he suggested that I apply early decision and I am soooo happy that I did. I submitted my app with the same scores and some extra clincial experience from my senior year. I interviewed in mid July and was accepted before the end of the month. It was such a relief to be able to enjoy my year off. If anyone has any questions about my experience or would like advice about being wait-listed feel free to message me. Also I have friends who are tour guides and I can tell you that interviews are basically over by Christmas here, there's maybe a handful in January but the majority of interviews in Jan/Feb/March are high school students applying for the 7 year program.

Also since I saw a lot of you are asking about housing, I can tell you what some of us do. About 60% of the MSIs live in 180 because it just makes everything very convenient. Everyone else either lives in various apartment complexes or with their parents in Newark, Montclair, Hoboken/ Jersey City and some of the other surrounding cities. I live about 20 minutes away and I can drive my car right into the guarded parking deck and walk through the tunnel into school. I haven't had any problem driving through Newark at night.

If anyone else has any questions feel free to ask or message me 🙂

So, according to the annual student expenses sheet (http://rbhs.rutgers.edu/studentfinancialaid/app_process/14 Budgets/2013-14_NJMS.pdf), we should probably expect to have ~$60k worth of expenses during our first year, but we're only covered for about $42k with unsubsidized stafford loans according to our initial letter from the student financial aid office. I'm guessing the rest comes from high-interest GradPLUS or private loans? How have previous MS1's handled the loan situation?

Ok - the school will cover ~$42k in unsubsidized federal loans, and the rest is expected to be covered by the GradPLUS loan apparently. Is this the case for the rest of you guys?

It is for me. I'll be withdrawing later this week. Good luck to the rest of you waiting!

has anyone gotten in through the regular waitlist last year? or do u guys know anyone?

I met an MS1 who got accepted off the waitlist days before orientation. I can imagine that finding housing in such short notice would be a hassle.

I knew a bunch of ppl accepted from the priority waitlist, but do you know if ur friend was from the regular waitlist? im wondering if anyone's ever been accepted from the regular waitlist, seems very uncommon

Any movement on the waiting list?
Does anyone know if a few or quite a few are declining on acceptance this year freeing up some spots?

Does anyone know if it's possible for OOS students to establish NJ residency (for in-state tuition) after the first year?

So I just got the call!! I'm in! Is there a Facebook group I need details STAT!

Congrats!! good news!!
Were you on the regular waitlist?
would you please share your stats?

Priority waiting list.
OOS
GPA 3.6
MCAT 26

Facebook group anyone? Are dorms worth it? Or find your own place?

I withdrew my application here at the beginning of last week. I hope my spot went to someone who was waiting in this thread.

I received an email from Dr. Heinrich saying to provide a final update because the committee was going to review the priority alternate list applicants soon. Does this mean they review all of us in one big group and then decide who to pull off the list? Just curious what my chances are of getting off the priority alternate list? I know in year's past its had pretty good movement so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Lucky you!!
Is he writing to all priority alternate list applicants? I haven't seen anything yet.
have you sent him any updates so far?

i am on the priority list and i got the same email. are you on the priority list and didn't get the email? check your junk mail!

Yes I got the email a few days back.

Looking at TSC's post, I thought he was talking about another new email today. we are talking about the same email!!!
Hope they take all of us in this time!!

Yeah I had sent update emails every 2 weeks or so since February when I got put on the priority alternate list. I'm REALLY hoping I get pulled off the list.

I'm on 2 other priority wait lists and I have a DO acceptance. I would really really rather go MD, so I think I'm gonna just withdraw from the DO and pray I get off one of these 3 priority lists. Anyone else in a similar situation? This process has just been so exhausting 🙁

Looks like the committee has reviewed the priority wait list candidates already. One person (medmusiccat) got pulled off the list couple days back. Am I right?
Not sure what that means for me. This is my only chance. Really freaking out...

In the email Dr. Heinrich sent though it said they would be reviewing all of our files "soon." I got that email Thursday evening, so I would be shocked if they reviewed all of our files already. Congrats to @medmusiccat though!

Im guessing the priority list and the alternate list are different entities?

His ECs were being black
Not that I have to explain to such rude and ignorant comment but... HER* ECs were being president of AED and PHCPI while doing mission trips and a executive officer of other groups. I am first generation Hispanic from parents who never had the opportunity to even graduate high school and have been a part of the working class since 16 adding income to the household just to stay afloat. Oh and English is my second language. STATS are nothing compared to your life experience so how bout you learn something deanthedream17.
