2013-2014 Rutgers University - NJMS Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nope in state. But I figure that my financial aid package here is going to be all loans which actually makes it worse than some of the other schools I've been accepted to. Supposedly there are some full tuition scholarships at NJMS though.

wow! well you're lucky to be in that boat 🙂 congrats

Annnnnnnnd....Priority alternate list
So for all of you who were wondering if they do a priority alternate list, they do.
Hoping for some love later in the cycle =( only interview too...

is everyone put on the priority alternate list? or is there also a regular wait list too?

"The NJMS Admissions Committee has reviewed your application. Unfortunately, at this
time we are not able to offer you an acceptance. You have been placed on our
“Priority” Alternate List. This means that you will be among the first group of
students reviewed by the admissions committee should seats become available in the
entering class.

Please be advised that our review of the Priority Alternate List does not begin
until after May 15th. Should an opportunity arise before then we will notify you
immediately. In the meantime, please feel free to send us any updates you would
like included in your file via email to: [email protected].

Please label the email subject heading: Priority Alternate Application Addition"

Based on how they put it, it seems like there is priority and non-priority

When did you interview? Sorry to hear that you were wait listed..

Interviewed 10/31, and thanks, its alright, I'm taking it as an IOU an acceptance type of thing....I hope

Recently placed on the Priority Alternate list as well. Bummed out about this 🙁, any clue on how fast the (if at all) the Priority list moves and how many people they put on it typically?

From the string of waitlists lately, it does look like the class is full right now. Anyway interviewing in the future is pretty much interviewing for a waitlist position unfortauntely it seems.

The question is: if one is put on HP waitlist at this point what is the possibility of getting pulled of?

Probably high ... The people I interviewed with seemed like competitive applicants, and I'm holding an acceptance here mainly till I get financial aid notice back from other schools. When early admits start to withdraw I'd be optimistic that it'll open up more spots ...

Hmm...I hope so.

Are there multiple types of waitlists? Is HP alternate different that the priority alternate list which is different than the regular alternate list?

Based on the threads from the last few years, it looks like when people say HP for NJMS, they mean the priority alternate list, since previous threads have said that NJMS doesn't have a high priority alternate list, just a regular alternate and a priority alternate. That being said there are two different waitlists, just not three.

I'm 84% sure I'll be withdrawing. Like others, I am waiting to see financial aid. I also interview somewhere amazing in January, and if I am accepted then I probably won't even wait until financial aid stuff comes out to withdraw.

I like this school a lot; I have just been extremely fortunate so far this cycle. If I end up withdrawing, everyone here will be first to know. Best of luck.

Personally, I've met some current medical students at NJMS who were admitted from the priority wait list. It definitely happens. If I remember correctly, the school ends up admitting ~300+ students for their class of 176 or so. It seems as though they like to have the "full class" (~175) admitted by the first week of December, and I assume the majority of those admitted later on come from the priority wait list?? Not sure at all though.

Well I certainly hope you are right haha.

From an NJMS student:

Most of the 178 spots are filled before December, in time for the "Thanksgiving accepted student's reception". Notification for that event went out in early November.

Throughout the next few weeks, the list moves a lot so by the time of of the "January accepted student's reception", it's a whole new batch of people. Notification for that event went out in December.

The last person moved off the waitlist and got accepted into our class in July or so.

Thanks for the info, when exactly is the January reception?

I don't think that's how it works. If the class size is 178, then NJMS probably over accepts by at least 150 students initially. Those who get wait listed will only come off the wait list in May or June, when the admissions committee has a more accurate picture of who will actually be attending. Besides, a lot of people hold onto their spot at NJMS until May 15th because it is a good state school that will probably be cheaper than many other options.

Directly from their website: "Strong applicants not initially selected for acceptance may be placed on the Alternate List. Applicants are accepted from the Alternate List beginning in Mid-June."

Also, it is a myth that all current interviewees are interviewing only for a wait list spot. Directly from their website, yet again: "Regular Decision applicants are accepted on a rolling basis from October 15 through March." It just SEEMS that everyone who interviews late is destined for the wait list because yes, they probably do wait list more and accept fewer at this point, but this doesn't mean they accept no one.

Got it. I really hope you're right about the acceptances still going out at this point. Im interviewing later this month and would love to go here. Can anyone post any tips about the interview here?

My interview was pretty much just a conversation about my app and random things about life. I do know some people get stress interviews and get asked about health policy and their position on ACA.

Who does the interviews? Faculty i'm assuming right?

Yep faculty members, and sometimes you can request a student interview, though if you're interviewing soon, everyone is probably going to be on break then.

Gotcha. Well ill be prepared to talk about all of that stuff 🙂

I was told by my interviewer that asking about health care reform is considered mandatory, and all interviewers were instructed by the committee to ask a question about healthcare reform. Furthermore, my interviewer prefaced the question with a 2 minute long diatribe about how much he hates the question, so I don't think he was bluffing.

Those who were not asked the question likely interviewed with faculty who also thought the question was stupid, but chose to respond by not asking it rather than asking it and telling you how much they hate the question.

Also: has anyone else received the "Accepted Student (pre)Orientation" e-mail? It's an event being held in January and part of the day consists of "getting sized for white coats". Seriously?? Is this school pushing hard to maximize their yield or what? I think it's a good strategy....admit your class very early and then try to get them to imagine attending before they even hear back from other schools. But as I'm not decided on the school the pressure makes me feel a little uncomfortable.

Hmmm...what if someone gets sized for a white coat and then doesn't end up going. What happens to that poor lonely white coat?

My sentiments exactly.

Their willingness to host accepted students on more than one occasion is endearing. I certainly don't mind gaining a deeper perspective of the school, but January seems a little early to be sizing students for a NJMS white coat. With that said, AMC requests suit sizes in their acceptance packet, so it may not be as unusual as it seems.

This is probably a dumb question, but can someone explain the distinction between the priority and regular waitlists a little more clearly? I know that the school will look to the priority list first in terms of filling up the class, but how large is the priority list? Do applicants get pulled off the priority list starting early next year or at around May? What's the point of the regular waitlist, does the school ever eventually get around to pulling people off of that? Or is it basically "priority or bust"? Can you be bumped up to the priority waitlist based on updates you send to the adcom?

Thanks!

I am not sure if anyone answered your question, and I hope anyone out there will correct me if I am wrong. I don't believe NJMS does post-interview rejections or does them very rarely. They have accept, priority alternate, and alternate. Judging by previous treads seems like the class fills up by early December and it becomes very hard to get in. I saw estimates of around ~20 people placed on the priority alternate and could only guess the amount of people on the alternate list. They interview 600 applicants and accept ~300...I guess that gives us close to 300 people that are either on alternate or priority alternate.

Hopefully this helps...I imagine sending in updates can't hurt you.

Yeah, the class is pretty much filled, however I heard that half the class comes from the waitlist.

hey may i ask u where u heard that? if that's true..it would be great lol

I am almost certain a med student that attends the school said it. I would love to be able to interview here, I identify with the schools mission and I would be close to family. I have seen many people in this thread say that they are holding their acceptance till they here back about financial aid from other places.

oops this had already been answered. disregard.

Thanks so much for answering! I was just wondering because I was skimming the threads from previous years and it seems like most of the waitlistees get accepted off the priority wait list, which made me wonder what the point of having a regular wait list was in the first place if the school doesn't seem to use it. I'm a bit anxious about how fast the wait lists will move this cycle.

I hope this is true! In which case I imagine they pull people off the Regular waitlist as well. Unless the priority list really IS that large...

Im a current student here and unfortunately I dont think half the class comes from the waitlist. I dont have specific numbers but the school definitely accepts a lot more than end up coming here. So while they will have to resort to the waitlist, i dont imagine 90 people will get pulled off (class is around 180).

Best of luck to those waiting!

Albert Einstein has a similar situation with two waitlists, one priority and one regular. And people who express a strong interest have gotten accepted from the regular waitlist before those on the priority one. So if you are truly interested in the school I would definitely keep them aware of your interest

My last message got screwed up, but my response is within the quote bubble. Or my computer is being stupid right now haha

I still haven't heard from any of my IS schools yet. Can I send any kind of LOI to admission? But who do I write to? And what do I write at this point?
