2013-2014 University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did any OOS with absolutely no ties get an interview? I am also interested in the rural health program. The following is from UAMS's website "
November 15, 2013
Non-Arkansas residents with strong ties to Arkansas must submit letter to UAMS advocating strong ties to Arkansas."

Does this mean you HAVE to have ties in order to be interviewed? Also, will I receive an invite to send this letter in?

I'll be applying next cycle. Thank you all.

When they send the secondary to you via mail ( snail mail) in the packet it talks about submitting a letter advocating strong ties. I'm OSS but my aunt has lived there all my life and I also have other strong family ties to the state so I just talked about that. Best of Luck!!

So excited to meet some of you all Friday and Saturday. 🙂

Can anyone discuss housing options near UAMS? I swear I've read it either in this thread or an older one but can't find it on mobile. Maybe even just post old info if you know where to find it.

any 1bd, within walking distance hopefully? Anything pet friendly?

Thanks to anybody that is familiar with the area and can help out!
I live in Hillcrest, technically within walking distance... because of my studying habits I just prefer to go ahead and drive to campus in the morning. I'm pretty sure a lot of the houses for rent are pet friendly. Last year there were several upperclassmen selling houses, looking for roommates, etc., so that itself will provide several people with options. This summer, I may be looking to move somewhere different in Hillcrest myself and might be looking for a roommate so if anyone is fairly clean and if you have animals that preferably won't try to attack and eat my boyfriend, that'd be great... lol. Personally though, I'll make a plug for Hillcrest and its neighbor, the Heights. I love this area. I can literally get to everything I need within a 1-2 mile radius of campus - Target, Kroger, Starbucks, good food, running trails - and still be close to campus. (Although I should add, I am not referring to the Heights for an actual place to live. It is pretty expensive. But they have lots of good food and a Starbucks frequented by a large portion of us....)

Any idea what the stats are for in-state early acceptances? As January 22nd approaches I find myself more and more apprehensive...

is it bad if the interview ended earlier than the scheduled 45min? thought it was pleasant and went well, but my 3-person panel interview actually ended ~10 minutes early. wondering if i'm just over-thinking it?

You're probably just over-thinking it. I had an interview at another school -- i.e.. not UAMS -- that was shorter than the allotted time and I still got accepted. I mean, n = 1 and that wasn't UAMS, but I don't think a slightly shorter interview is the end of the world for your chances of admission.

FWIW, my UAMS interview actually went over the allotted time and I got accepted, so I think the allotted time is more of a guideline than anything.

The interview times vary a lot based off the interview team and if they feel they've covered all the categories you're being evaluated on. Somehow my interviews kept running over (sorry to those that were subjected to our ramblings), but we get a lot of leeway in how we structure the interviews as long as we get a feel for several key criteria, so there's bound to be a lot of variation in questions and timing. I wouldn't worry about getting out a few minutes early if I were you. Instead, tell yourself it might mean they liked you so much they didn't need to ask you anything else. 😀

Sure am hoping that's the case! :luck:

I was also wondering how I would go about sending thank you letters to my interviewers? I didn't get anything but their first names, so I was wondering whom I should email/write to - any advice? I was thinking of emailing Linda and asking her to pass my message along to my interviewers?

Thanks all!

You can email or call Linda and ask for your interviewers names (so you don't write a letter to an MD or PhD starting out "Hey Bob!") and then just send your thank-yous to the Admissions Office and Linda and Laken will take care of it from there, or you can request email addresses from Linda and she will likely have those too if you want to send an email.

Long wait until February 15th.

Waiting was worse than the MCAT and interview combined. Just look at it as an opportunity to play video games and do fun things while you can!

That's exactly what I've been doing. Some NCAA 13 and Tomb Raider with some collegiate sports. Oh an of course the Denver Broncos heading to the SuperBowl!! Whoot.

But yeah still long wait but considering January will be over before we know it.

So did anyone get an acceptance packet today?

I have another interview 2/14. OOS is suppose to hear back from UAMS around 2/15. I wish I could hear back a tad bit earlier so that If I got into UAMS I could cancel the other interview.

This thread is so dead. Here's to 4 more painful weeks of waiting

have any instate applicants heard back from the jan 22nd early acceptance cycle?

Well that's good to know. Progress not too much longer now even though it feels like forever.

Does anyone know how many acceptances are sent out in December and January?

I remember an earlier email from Ms. Dupuy saying 15-20. I'm not sure if that was referring to just December. Either way, I'd say 15 minimum and 40 maximum for both December and January.

I'm a little late to this thread, but I'm glad I found it! OOS GPA: 3.7 MCAT: 31 Interviewed in January. Does anyone know about how many OOS they accept? I know it probably varies and the MSAR says 22 but I have heard several different counts.

What is there to do in Little Rock if you are a single young guy?
Probably the same things as most smaller cities I imagine. City league sports, bars, decent concerts come through, some nightlife other than the bars, some decent festivals, lots of outdoors activities, and there are cultural things as well depending on what you're interested in.

I don't know but I would guess at least 100. But that's just a guess. Maybe look at MSAR.
Less than 25 each early cycle, less than 50 total until the February mailing date. It's generally ~10% each time for early admits, which would be around 17-18, but sometimes it is a bit more or a bit less. (This is why I always tell people on here not to worry much about those first two dates because the vast majority of you won't hear anything until February.)

Hang in there, guys! Most of the class always receives their packets in February so you only have a couple of more weeks.

Matt, if you're still lurking here, how bad is it if I forgot to send a thank you to my interviewers/Linda? Is it too late/will it negatively impact me? My interview was a while ago....

I'm not Matt.... But, I had the October interview date last year and didn't send my thank you's until sometime in December. I always figure better late than never.

It's borderline too late for them to be received before decisions are made, and definitely too late for them to have any positive impact (interviewers submitted their comments/recommendations on you about 2 weeks out from your interview or less), so at this point I probably wouldn't bother. Won't affect you negatively at this point either. The Thank Yous are more of a nice gesture that keeps your name on the admissions staff's mind and might make your interviewers think nice little thoughts about you before they submit their recommendations, but after those are submitted any real effect they have is pretty minuscule.

Well, good to know. My interview went really, REALLY well, both of my interviewers were awesome, really liked me, and I have reason to believe I stick out in their memories (last interview of the day, and I have some very unique stories about my reason for getting into medicine). How heavily are interviews weighed compared to gpa, MCAT, volunteering, etc? My gpa is a little weak and my MCAT average and I hope that a strong interview can make up for some of that...

That's something that only the few people that sit on the admissions committee truly know. We were told that our interview impressions/summaries, etc. were "critically important" because it is the only way the committee can get a feel for fit, personality, etc. but as far as how much it can outweigh numbers, it is hard to say. I know that it can help you dramatically (just as it can hurt the seemingly "perfect" on paper applicants dramatically if they're jerks) and there are definitely a number of people admitted each year that may not have had the strongest GPA or best MCAT but their CV or interview gave the adcom good reason to think they'd do just fine in medical school and would be good doctors... but it's not an exact science and it changes a bit from year to year depending on the applicant pool of course. UAMS always has an unusually broad range of admitted MCAT and GPA numbers so take that as an encouraging sign that they put value on more than just the stats.

My interviewers were very blunt about the role their recommendation plays: they said it wouldn't get you in, but it could keep you out. One even made a joke about screening for axe murderers.

In regards to accepting lower stats, Mr. South told me that an MCAT score of 7 or less was a red flag to the admissions committee. He said that after looking at years of data there was little to no difference in performance from those scoring in the 8-10 range, but success in medical school dropped significantly below that threshold.

Not something written in stone, but he said it during our conversation on improving my application. Not to be a downer, but when I applied last year I convinced myself that my "overall application" was competitive to alleviate my legitimate concerns with an uncompetitive MCAT... Ultimately, I just set myself up for greater disappointment. Be honest. Be realistic. But still hope for the best Good luck!

Eh, more or less. Think of the interview as something that can improve a decent application, seal the deal on a good one, or keep an axe murderer (or jerk) out. The last part is the most important, but the first thing isn't totally insignificant. If the committee likes some of what they see (great resume, awesome personal statement, good story, whatever) but have some mild concerns, the interviewers' comments and recommendation can push you into the "accepted" category if things went very well. (This happens every year for at least a few people that have a little lower MCAT or GPA but good everything else and rock their interview.) It's true that if you did poorly on the MCAT or have a very low GPA, the interview can't save the whole thing, but if you're a little below average then the interview can definitely be the factor that gets you "in".

Not long left until notifications go out. Good luck guys, try not to stress out too much!

Or fours day to mail out. Hopefully they will get done earlier and mail out on the 13th. That way they can make up for President's Day.
I have heard from many people that the 15th was the day we would hear, but the email clearly said everyone would know by the 20th... Where did people get the 15th date from?

Well the email said No later than Feb. 20th. I feel like that's everyone should have received something by then date. Also it only took a couple of days to get my secondary.

I believe that people got the February 15th date from last year's cycle.

So big packet means acceptance, small letter means rejection?

well in my world WL=rejection

well in my world WL=rejection

Make disappointment your friend.

Rejection is a letter, the other two are packets.

Seems like the 15th is pushing it... But that probably won't stop me from waiting for the mailman like a dog haha
