2013-2014 University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's been given to us (M4s) but not sure what their stance is on publishing it. I can't imagine why it would be a problem, people were given the option to opt-out of it if they didn't want their match location, etc. released.

See attached.

Thanks! Congrats on Anesthesiology?

When will the school start to pull from the waitlist?

When will the school start to pull from the waitlist?

The biggest movement is supposed to be after May 15 but I'm sure there are several people who get pulled before that. We have another month to go :grumpy:

I am OOS, on the wait list, and just got a financial aid notification letter today. Is that typical that they send that aid notification to persons on the wait list?

Yeah I am on the alternate list too and got a financial aid letter yesterday. I'm in-state, so I'm assuming they are just mailing the letters to all the alternates.

Any UAMS students around?

If anyone wants some kind of update, I talked to Linda DuPuy today and there are 40-50 alternates this year. I think she said there are 26 OOS students and they aren't planning to take more than that. After May 15, she expects around 10 seats to open up. 6 alternates have already been given a spot (I assume they're rural practice scholarship people). But hopefully more than 16 alternates are taken off the list this cycle :xf:

I read an article which mentioned that a number of students from UAMS didn't match into residencies this year. Do any current students have more information on this?

Just got accepted today!! I'm from district 2 and I wasn't a rural practice scholarship recipient so they're moving through the rest of the waitlist now

Congrats!!! Hoping to be able to post something similar soon!

Sure, any specific details you were wanting to know?

For basic rough facts- 18 students initially did not fully match when the algorithm ran and the SOAP opened. This class did relatively well in the SOAP ("scramble") considering how few spots there are in it anymore and how many people were forced into it, and after all was said and done there were actually fewer unplaced students than last year. Last number I heard was 6, but it's theoretically possible that decreased by 1 or 2 after I was given numbers. I do a decent amount of political advocacy on GME issues so I'm of the opinion there shouldn't be any graduating medical students without a residency position after the Match, but that's the reality of the situation right now and it's been getting worse (nationwide) the past few years due to increasing supply of medical students and a fixed/stagnant number of residency positions. (You can thank your congress and current administration for the situation continuing to deteriorate... they are well aware of the problem.)

Thanks Matt,
Your responses have been so helpful during this cycle. Best of luck in your future endeavors!

Been reading SDN for a long time and all the good information provided, and had to make a profile finally.

I've been accepted off the alternate list for UAMS today, look forward to meeting all my future classmates! And best of luck to all of you still on the waitlist!

Hey, that's awesome, congrats! Are you in-state? If so, which district?

Got pulled from the waitlist today!

Not sure what I'm going to do yet. 1 month isn't a lot of time to get everything in place for this fall. I may defer.
Congrats!!! Very exciting news. I may be biased, but I vote defer 🙂 best of luck to you either way though

Well guys, unless I hear from UAMS in the next 2 days, it looks like I will be attending my 2nd choice school, which is a D.O. school based out of Kansas City. I'm accepting an hpsp scholarship from the Army and am set to swear in on Thursday evening. Thanks for all the support and advice. Good luck to everyone in their careers!

Can anybody tell me about the interview at UAMS? From what I've read it's relaxed and a blind interview, but that it lasts 45 mins. What all do they talk about for nearly an hour? Any advice? I know be yourself and no Bs-ing, but anything unusual? How do they start their interview? how do they end it? what kind of questions do they ask besides the Tell me about yourself, what do you know about current healthcare changes, and why medicine? I just can't think of what else they'd ask for 45 mins.

What are some ways to prepare?

It's going to depend on your interviewers, but yes it's very laid back. I also thought 45 min seemed like forever, but it flew by actually. We basically talked about my childhood and path leading up to that day, what interested me medicine, my hobbies, etc etc. It was very conversational and they make sure it flows. The only think you could "prepare" for is some background on healthcare ( very very vaguely) and maybe think about your future goals and details on any research you might have done in the last or are currently doing. Overall it's a low key enjoyable experience so don't worry to much!

Agreed! So relieved that it's over! It was such a great experience...very laid back, and they all made me feel so comfortable. Hopefully the interview can help overshadow my low (super low) MCAT score!

Now for the wait...
Did you get in?
