2013-2014 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

well i called and the lady told me to check online lol. she was not helpful at all.
I said Brian. So you have to ask for him, or get lucky and get him when he answers the phone. The latter was my situation. Also, be kind (not saying you were not). But they get lots of calls and annoying people bugging them. They were all really nice any time I have called (maybe three or four times). Don't demand to know, don't even ask. Brian just offered to look into it for me when I called.

I also called, and when the lady asked if I checked online, I replied that I did and wanted to know if I could possibly know about any details. Then, she told me that I was reviewed once and that at that time they decided not to offer an interview. Then, she said (was on the bus and couldn't hear well) something about the end of December...probably that I'd hear a decision by then.

How did your status turn out if you don't mind sharing? What did Brian say?

Well I called and luckily got Brian on the phone. He said if you haven't heard back yet, you will officially be put on hold in the next 2 weeks or so. They're re-review in Jan and fill up remaining interview slots. He said about 2000 people will be put on hold and its everyone that hasn't received an interview thus far. About 30/40 interviews will be given out in Jan. He said the likelihood of interview if you haven't gotten one by now will be less than like 5 %...so at this point if you don't have a interview it's pretty much not happening. sorry to be the bearer of depressing news.

Yeah, of course. He said my priority number was good but my completion date was bad. I am 100% guaranteed a wait through Jan 🙁

2000people on hold? That can't be true cz I thought they sent out less than 2000 secondaries?

I decided to give them a call and was told that no decision has yet been made since my application has just recently been sent out for review. submitted 10/19. really hoping for an interview here but the chances don't look too good 🙁

Just called and I got Brian and he basically told me that Im technically on hold, and told me that my odds for an interview are about 5%, so not expecting much, oh well. If I do get an invite he said Ill know by mid to late January. Man this really sucks.

I'm pretty sure they sent out around 2500-2700

really? on their FAQ page, they stated that they "invited 1992 applicants to submit secondary applications for the entering class of 2008"

Do you really see them inviting more than 500 secondaries in just five years?

Brian told me 2500-2700. Soooo...yes?

Oh alright. haha I didn't read the part where you said Brian told you that. I guess in my mind, I was hoping that's not true.

well at least Brian is honest, although now I am regretting calling and asking. How many ppl do they generally accept?

Damn, now I am debating whether I should call next week. Did Brian tell you about where your priority score stands?

It was definitely nice to know rather than just wonder. I was kind of surprised by how forthcoming he was with that information, but definitely appreciated it

no not really he just considering my profile that my chances are 5%, I have no idea how he came to that conclusion but oh well.

Yeah same here. It is depressing, I wanted to ask what about my app they didn't like, but I know it has to be my mcat. I feel like crappy though because that autobiography for the secondary felt like my best written one out of the whole app cycle.

I was complete 10/10 and haven't heard anything yet. There isn't even a check to indicate if my application is on hold.
I heard they've been doing widespread rejections. Anyway, 5% chance is (on the brightside) way better odds than getting
into any one medical school. We always don't get that KO, but sometimes we do, so have faith!

In the meantime, here's to hope for UCLA! I'm interviewing at Davis in Jan.

Thanks for your support. Only problem is I still haven't gotten 1 interview yet so hard to stay optimistic.

2500-2700 secondaries, did their number of interviews increase as well?

for all us late submitters (i was super duper late) we probably had a slightly lower chance of interview anyway! i think the only really jarring thing is the horrifyingly tangible 30/2000 number. to me the wait till january is going to be super annoying, but otherwise i think this is kinda expected. probably the case for ucla and uci too.

And yet they claim that submission time does not affect your chances. 🙁

I'm sure they have a throughput way of accepting/rejecting. My friend and I applied after graduating from UC Berk each with similar stats, though i had more research and she had more volunteer work. I submitted my primary a month after she, and my secondary two weeks after that. She never received a secondary and was rejected last week *shrugs* not sure what divine omnipotence is controlling this ****.

Weird. I didn't know they were doing rejections yet! What month was she verified/complete?

Maybe they'll start in on the post-secondary rejections as well

So, she submitted her primary on the very first day of the cycle. Probably not very helpful. They never gave her a secondary and they rejected her last
week or so.
We both got rejected from UCSF post secondary like a couple weeks ago. As for the other UCs radio silence. She finished all of her UC secondaries in August and has yet to hear from LA, UCI, UCR, UCD...
I submitted all my secondaries in october and heard back from UCD a week later (GO FIGURE) I really couldn't believe that had like insta invited me
for an interview.
I really hope to hear from more schools soon but we're going into the holiday season and no one is going to want to work on this stuff I'm sure.

Sigh, this process seems completely random sometimes. Wishing you lots of luck on your Davis interview from a fellow bear 🙂! I was complete Oct-Nov as well and am dying to get some love from any UCs

go bears

30 out of 2000? so i really don't know how brian came up with that 5%, it seems by my calculation that if were all competitive enough to be put on hold that we have 1.5% of a chance. Its really hard to believe these schools claim that after reviewing almost 3000+ applications (depending on the school of course) that they judge each person's application equally, sorry thats bs because its impossible. Even if they have 20 people in their admissions office with clearance to review applications (pretty sure they don't) by the time they get through the first 1000 they, understandbly, will be sick of looking at apps. So unless you somehow are able to submit your application super early I don't see applicants such as myself (who by no means applied late, I submitted my secondary august 10, not early but not late either and theres a number of reasons why many of us can't be some of the first people to submit 'early') having a fair shake, especially if my stats are not considered stellar. so ill pray and hope that i am one of those luck few from the 20 to 30, but its pretty much down the toilet for this one and seems like any hope of staying home in CA is slowly slipping away.

This implies they have reviewed every single application submitted, including all the ones up until today... I'm not sure when they stopped sending secondaries but I submitted mine 1 month ago. So I'm just gonna lie to myself and be optimistic, but not hopeful. 2 weeks we'll find out for sure. I wish UCI would hurry up with their interview/rejections as well... (and every other school that gives silence).

Also did Brian give out information on how many interviews have been sent already? If they gave 678 for the class of 2008, they should at least have given that many now, possibly more with the increased secondaries. This seems like a relevant question to ask them.

Also don't discount people who will withdraw interviews later on.

I got a secondary in the first week of Nov, a bit over a week after AMCAS app verification but they may have different piles for different profiles e.g. IS, OOS etc., so everything may not be by FIFO.

No, he didn't give me any other info. he literally said " sorry to be depressing but the chances of getting an interview in jan are very very low ...probably no more than 5%"

Sorry to abruptly change the subject guys, but does anyone know if UCSD offers any joint MD/MS degrees in biomedical science, or is MD/PhD your only option? The website wasn't very clear to me.

Thanks,
Nen

Check out the website above. It looks like there is no premade MD/MS program in biomedical sciences, but you can certainly develop it on your own if you wanted to (the last option on the page). I don't know anyone who is currently doing a self-developed MD/MS program, but the administration is extremely supportive of the students so I can't imagine it being very difficult to get it approved.

I hope that was helpful.

Extremely helpful, thank you Kay! It is still early days in my application process, but I couldn't help drooling over the department of neurosciences' website. 🙂

Thanks again,
Nen

Congrats! Do you happen to be URM? When were you complete? Good luck.
Ok, I'll bite. I've seen you ask this question before, you've stated that certain schools are "looking for URM" etc. Are you an URM?

Hey guys, late secondary submitter here. I just called admissions. Didn't get ahold of Brian, however the very nice woman I spoke to told me that my app is "currently being reviewed." She did not say anything to the effect of being put on hold until January, so I think they may actually stick to the non-rolling admissions process. Secondary submitted on 10/19, OOS, 4.0/34.

Not sure why you would jump to that conclusion lol, but yes. complete 10/1

Congrats! Are you IS or OOS?

IS.

My understanding from the thread is that they'll be reading through the rest of the late-ish/late submissions for the next few weeks. Then after everyone has been read at least once they'll put everyone not rejected on hold. So my guess is that your app is still in the unread pile.

Is August considered a late-submission? It seems like a long time to be under review, especially after hearing back from 90% of my secondaries by now.

As in secondary submission? Shouldn't be, as I was complete the last week of August and interviewed at the end of October

o_0 How many schools did you apply to? I haven't heard back from 58% of my secondaries?

That seems entirely possible, but I'm hoping against hope that the rest of the people who have spoken to admissions have been misinformed 🙂 Not likely, though!

Interview invite earlier this week, secondary was complete first week of August. Whee!

For anyone who has interviewed already, how important is the free clinic tour the evening before? I would like to attend, but it would mean arriving an extra day early (and I have a limited number of vacation days I can cash out for interviews this cycle). Is attendance at the tour taken into consideration for admissions decisions?

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

This might be a late reply but if you can't make the free clinic tour--don't sweat it. It's definitely not part of the admissions process. It's just an opportunity for interviewees to see one of the things you can be involved with at UCSD. However, the free clinic is pretty cool and personally I liked comparing it to the student run free clinics at other schools I interviewed at.

I'm not around on SDN as much as I used to be anymore, but if you guys have any questions (about UCSD or another school or the application process in general), feel free to PM me.

II this morning for both the normal program and PRIME! Does anyone know if this counts as two separate interviews (the email is unclear)? Super excited as this is my first california interview! Completed 10/19 IS. I called them last friday and was told I was still in the unread pile. There's still hope!!

Yahooo! It seems that my suspicion that they actually adhere to some form of non-rolling admissions was accurate.
