2013-2014 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, I have a technical question about the secondary. I'm having trouble uploading my passport photo. Every time I try to upload the image I get an error message, "ERROR - wrong file type; photo not loaded". Did anyone else have this problem?

It's in JPEG format. I've tried re-formatting in Photoshop and re-exporting with no success. Is there a secret file size limit I don't know about? I know I could wait until tomorrow and contact their admissions office but figured it'd be worth a shot asking around SDN. Thanks!

I had the same issue. This is going to sound weird, but I had to go on my iPad and upload the photo from my iPad photo roll. For some reason my computer wouldn't do it. After I uploaded it on my iPad I got back on my laptop, re-opened my secondary, and the photo was there with no problems. I tried re-sizing the photo as well but the iPad thing ended up being the only way to make it upload.

Goodluck!

Awesome!!! I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the info!

UPDATE:

No luck 🙁 Same error message. Guess I'll just have to wait until tomorrow to troubleshoot with the webmaster. Thanks though!

Did you figure out how to upload? I'm getting the same problem and the ipad idea did not work for me either... sigh and I was so excited to finally submit lol.

No, I didn't. I emailed the webmaster and will phone tomorrow if I don't hear back. Double sigh.

I just called them and they said its a problem on their end and they're working on it right now. We can try again later this afternoon or tmrw. Thank goodness.

Just called the admissions office. FYI for anyone having trouble uploading their passport photo they are aware and working on the problem. If your app is due today the deadline will be extended without penalty.

Haha! Didn't see your post!

Still no secondary from UCSD. Undergrad here. Grad here. Work here currently. GPA is fairly low, but have good mcat and ec's.

I hope that the alumni association calls me asking for donations.

Anyone have success sending in a pre-interview update letter? I get the impression that they might not be receptive to these :/

They told us at the interview day that they didn't even want post-interview updates, so I would imagine they definitely wouldn't want pre-interview updates.

Anyone, especially current students, know how much waitlist movement there is?

well that is optimistic i guess. This was just after I went around and told everyone UCSD rejected me pre-secondary lol

What do you think made you stand out (seems like we got roughly same #s but your gpa is slightly higher) and receive an II?? Congrats! 😀
I have no idea. Maybe my recs?

I can't believe the epic grad student housing at UCSD. Only $650/mo. for a studio and $850/mo. for a 1-BR, $950/mo. for a 2-BR in La Jolla (includes utilities, wide open courtyards, sports and gym areas). 🙂 At UCSF you have to run the rat-race for private housing... usually $1000/mo to have a bedroom in a crappy 4-BR complex sharing a bathroom with 3 or more people and no parking---utilities not included and definitely no open space outside.

The places are really nice for sure! I'll give you heads up though, most of the places have a 6-12 month waiting list. Make sure to get your housing request in early! You can check wait times here: https://hdh.ucsd.edu/ARCHWaitList/statistics.aspx

Looks like UCSD interview goes through March even for good, early applicants, so I will not be putting much stock into UCSD and just leave it as a dream OOS school.

God. It's so cheap.

I'm currently a first year student here at UCSD. Let me know if you guys have any questions!

Having some faulty memory which is causing a bit of doubt, for those of you who clearly remember the secondary "Experience" section or those who still have access to the secondary, did they ask for you to list out the same three most meaningful experiences you had previously identified on the AMCAS or were they asking for you to identify three other ones?

Also, I accidentally put "N/A" for one of activity LOR authors instead of the actual author's name. Do you guys think it's worth emailing UCSD about this and putting a spotlight on the error or just let it go because they'll end up reading all LORs anyway?

Thank you for doing this. I loved UCSD at my interview. Any insight into how much weight list movement there is?

Same 3 meaningful activities from your AMCAS.

If you have a lot of letters or think that the letter tied with this experience is a particularly strong letter, I would let them know.

Hello, I'm not sure about how much waitlist movement there is (not sure about the weight list movement either, haha). Just from my anecdotal experience, I saw most of my class during the second look weekend, so I don't think there is a lot of waitlist movement. I can certainly ask around for you even though I suspect it will vary widely from year to year and the administration won't have a solid idea until much later in the interview season.

That's fair. Thank you.

Yeah, the housing situation here is pretty nice. Grad housing at UCSD in Mesa, Rita, and One Miramar are all very affordable (<$600/month) and are very close to school/the beach. Definitely put in your housing application as soon as you get accepted. From what I remember, you can change stuff in your application without it affecting your place in line so don't feel the need to decide right now on 1. if you're going to matriculate to our splendid school or 2. which grad complex you're going to live in next year.

@Ambitionista, thanks for your response with regard to the experience section, definitely calmed my nerves to know I followed the instructions.

Also, if anyone accidentally doesn't identify an LOR author for the most significant experiences section in the secondary, apparently UCSD's answer is: don't sweat it. I spoke to someone at admissions today and she said that UCSD will read all your letters. The letters you identify in that section are just regarded as the letters that are most important to you (although, I'm sure some of us would argue that a most significant activity doesn't necessarily equate to a most significant letter). The admissions representative told me not to bother emailing or contacting them to point out the omission, it's largely inconsequential. Obviously though, if you can get it right the first time, do so!

Does anyone know if they interview the same ratio of students that they gave secondaries to from IS and OOS? For example if they gave secondaries to 1200 IS and 400 OOS will they interview 300 IS and 100 OOS? Their website lists total applications and secondaries given (from '08) but no separation between IS and OOS. I'm guessing it's roughly equal?

Just random speculation while on break at work, hopelessly hoping for an interview as OOS.

(BTW OOS was said 6 times in this post for reference)

Where is UCSD on scheduling interview dates now? God, complete back in July, don't know what my chances are. Surprisingly no one has mentioned being put on hold. Last year, they started putting people on hold quite early on with post-secondary rejections coming in November I believe.

Interview invite today. Complete mid-August. In state. Dates available from early to mid-January.

They're still on August but already on January? Hm. I wonder how late they interview.

Perhaps they aren't going in order? I haven't been following this thread so I'm not sure if it's already been established one way or another that they follow some sort of pattern. However, for what it's worth you have the ability to change your interview date as often as you like until 7 days from your interview.

Still waiting to hear back from October 24th interview...I've been nervous all morning. Brian said to call after noon if we hadn't hear back, really didn't want to have to call though!

I wan't to call...but at the same time it makes me intensely nervous. I may give it another hour and then call Brian. I can think of few things worse right now than receiving bad news via phone call.

Complete 9/26. Still waiting for secondary invitation. anyone know if UCSD does silent rejections? should I call and ask about the status of my application?

thanks!

If you do call could you let us know? Nervous like no other right now!

Yeah same. I already received one waitlist today, so I'm already in a meh mood. Not sure if I should call the office and ask for Brian, or just bombard his direct line.

Bombard his direct line and then let me know what he says haha (I only say this because I am too chicken to call right now)

Absolutely. I plan on calling at 1 if I haven't heard back. I'll keep you all posted.

I mean at least 1 email has been sent out already so I'm wondering if it's taking a while to send out all the emails or something...

Yeah if you do call that'd be great hahaha.

True, that's why I wanted to give him a bit longer. I don't want to be "that guy", especially if he is right in the middle of sending them out.

Yeah. I think this is just one time where I have to make peace with the situation and just.. sit tight. haha

Helpful - but still missing a key number, secondaries completed. The number was roughly 2000 secondaries sent, let's assume 1900 were returned? If only I knew how many secondaries were sent OOS. Pointless speculation but it makes me feel like I can do something, I don't like feeling helpless in the process at this point. UCSD seemed to emphasize a person's background and that is one of the things I have going for me, just want that interview!

i thought they only accept 1/3 of students post interview? does that mean they accept 40 students from the waitlist?
