2013-2014 University of Central Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't even heard back from other schools but I'm already living in Florida in my head! August seems so far away! It's going to be hard at this point to convince me to go anywhere else my gut is screaming UCF at me 🙂

Anybody know how many more interview groups there will be? Been EFI forever.... keeping my fingers crossed!!
I was wondering the same thing. OOS applicant but will be moving with my family to Central Florida after graduation so I will be IS then. EFI since September. UCF is, was and has always been my first choice but I am beginning to think I will not get an II. Very disappointing :/ Congratulations to all who have been accepted---you will certainly help with the shortage of physicians in Florida.

Remember that florida requires a year of living/working outside of school to get IS tuition

II today. Very excited. UCF would pretty much be as perfect of an acceptance as it can get for me.

Anyone recently get in from the wait-list? If so, what was your last known general position?

So, getting an interview this late I'm wondering if they are still accepting right out of the interview pool or just keeping the wait list filled up? Is it too late to hope for an acceptance post interview?

UCF has a fairly transparent system. After your interview the committee votes on you and you get a score. That puts you on a ranked list of interviewed applicants. Also at the time the committee votes on the applicants, they decide how many offers are going to be made that week. Then they go to the top of the list and admit those people.

So at no point are you interviewing specifically for the waitlist. You are interviewing for a spot on the overall list and where you fall will determine whether or not you get a call right away or are told you are waitlisted. Many people are accepted off the waitlist.

Thanks for the info. Is the score based solely on your interviews or your file at large?

I honestly believe they look at each individual and theirs ECs/essays over stats because I have average if not below average stats 3.67/30 OOS and I was not only interviewed but also accepted. I don't think stats matter as much to them as finding people that will fit well into their program and can offer differing perspectives and experiences that they can share with their classmates enhancing the overall diversity. Sorry my own little rant but UCF really made me feel like they chose me personally and didn't just pick an app out of the pile. Where as most schools haven't given me the time of day due to my stats UCF looked beyond that and viewed my application in its entirety and I'm so grateful 🙂 Just one of the many reasons I believe I will matriculate here!! 🙂

Same here...similar stats, got an early interview, and got in first round of acceptances. They definitely seem more interested in the person and how they will fit. They too made me feel like they chose me personally, not because of stats...and that is why I will most likely matriculate here!!! 🙂

Best of luck to everyone else waiting for an II or an acceptance!

Hmm I wonder then... Was anyone a replicant who was accepted

Well my place on the waiting list means I am likely moving up north for med school....still a fan and I am happy for all of you who get to matriculate

I was a reapplicant and was EFI last year but never got the call. However, I did have a 27 MCAT and applied late last year so not sure it was enough to make their threshold to interview especially as an OOS. This year I was EFI within 2 weeks and an interview call about 2 weeks after that.

What about your experiences do you believe helped you? Is UCF more interested in people who want to be and have shown interest in becoming clinicians or researchers/academics?

UCF has no preference as far as wanting people who will pursue academics, healthcare policy, undeserved populations, global or public health, etc. What they want (it seems) is for their students to pursue what they're most passionate about so they end up having the greatest impact. The FIRE project (required research project) is designed such that it can be focused on any of those aforementioned things. They seem to value all types of research including but not limited to things like laboratory bench-top research, behavioral science research, epidemiology, public health, etc. Basically, if you have a faculty member to mentor you, you can "research" almost anything you want.

Of course, ALL of the people they train as physicians will be a clinician to some capacity. Those characteristics are not shadowed by the research initiative.

Amazing. Very excited about this school.

Ooh your stats are similar to mine. Hopefully I'll be getting a call soon as well. Congrats!

I would go with tygerguy on this UCF doesn't seem to care if you want to do primary care/specialize/research as long as you are passionate about your interests and it shows. Part of what makes them so awesome is that you don't feel like you have to emphasize any one thing in your app over another. Personally I have a very strong research background along with a lot of clinical experience. I also grew up in a rural, medically under served population and have a lot of experiences to pull from in that regard. Gave me a very unique perspective on medicine and added passion/interest so I think that helped diversify my application also. Really as long as you are honest and passionate about whatever you are interested in that will shine through in your essays and interviews! 🙂

Got the news that I was accepted here. Very exciting! This school has a lot of pull considering the open-minded atmosphere, wonderful facilities, and relatively cheap tuition and scholarships. Last year I had no acceptances, while this year year I have multiple acceptances, and all immediate - no wait lists. Now, the difficult part is choosing. For those of you hanging on a wait list at the bottom of your rope, be sure to try again if you don't make it this year. It's the pits, but you'll get there! Minor differences in your application may make a big difference - so can perseverance. Good luck!

Congratulations! That's awesome.:claps:Mind telling us what (in general) you did different this time around?

Congratulations!! Persistence and determination pay off! 🙂 Good luck making the choice!

Withdrew my app. Good luck to everyone still in the running!

Can you share what you did differently or what updates you made to your application?

I interviewed more conversationally as opposed to answering questions as if it were an oral exam. At the time I was wrapping up my dissertation and stressed to the nth degree - I think I answered the questions like a scientist under the gun, not like a friendly guy who you'd want your doctor to be. Both interviews felt like this last time. This time, one felt like that but the other was much more fluid and comfortable.

I added one clinical volunteering activity, but I already had some of that on my app so it was really just garnish.

Also, my MCAT jumped from 30 to 34. They were fine with the 30 before, but the 34 probably helped comfort some of their doubts, if they had any. It obviously didn't hurt.

I think the interview was the most important change. If you even get an interview at all, then I think they're not as worried much about stats anymore. It seems that you've passed through that gate. I even remember one of their deans saying something to this degree the first time I interviewed.
