2013-2014 University of Central Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
CURRENT STUDENTS: Do any of y'all live at the Retreat at Lake Nona or at Colonial Grand at Randal Lakes or know anything about them? Thanks!

Does anyone know when they stop sending Interview Invites? Like many I've been Eligible for Interview forever and I just want to know how much longer I have to wait before I should give up.

Seriously dude! It has been forever since that EFI. UCF is one of my top choices! I think they send their last invites out this month. Please correct me if I'm wrong. So, I'm holding my hands tightly and praying for an II. :xf:

According to last year, Feb 18 was when the final list of interviews were handed out (straight from REL).

Not really holding out much hope for this school, but at least I got in somewhere here in FL 🙂

Good luck and hope one of us SDNers hears in the next few weeks.

Final interview date is March 7. I anticipate that selections for that date and any other openings will be done NLT Feb 20.

A bunch of students live at Watermark, Retreat at Lake Nona, Reserve at Beachline, and one more right off of Narcoossee Rd. whose name I can't remember at the moment.
There are a number of students who do not live in the above mentioned complexes (they may or may not live in Colonial Grand or Randal Lakes, not sure), but I don't know too much about the ones you've listed other than Retreat.

Anyone know the length of time from the time you go into Eligible for Interview to getting the phone call? I submitted mine in November and am still waiting (1/18/14).

3.93 GPA / 3.95 sGPA
32 MCAT (7VR/13PS/12BS)
Hey man, I'm a current M1 now, 3.85 32 MCAT, was EFI in September, II in late January, interviewed mid Feb, waitlisted top 1/3, accepted late April.

Thank you so much! I didn't even see those other complexes.

For questions about living, best to refer to the class facebook page since you'll have access to lots of input from various current students!

Just got an interview invite today!!!
I was complete 7/30 and EFI in September.
3.8 Cumulative and Science GPA and a 28 MCAT.THERE IS HOPE!

I'm so excited

Congrats! That's really exciting. Are you IS or OOS?

I have an upcoming interview in five days and have read the website in its entirety about 3 times, researched affiliated hospitals and also the FIRE program. But I would love to hear more info:

For those of you already accepted, or current students, what did/do you feel is UCF's main education emphasis? Research? Early Clinical Exposure? Community of practice? Etc (something I'm missing?)

I understand from a current student/friend of mine that UCF seeks to accept students wanting to enhance or improve the face of medicine through a variety of means. Is there something else I am potentially missing that would serve as great talking points?

Thank you guys in advance!

The College of Medicine at UCF is a very open-ended institution. If you are motivated to improve health through any means, be it research, patient care, policy (I think Dean German calls these the "Nobel prize-winners," the "Mother Teresas" and the "surgeon generals"), or anything else, UCF will support you. In the end, we're becoming more of a research-intensive school, but it doesn't matter if research isn't your thing. It's the sort of place where you can do virtually anything you want in medicine if it's truly in your heart.

Great. Thank you.

Another question...how well organized is the FIRE program? I've been fortunate enough to participate in research and have an understanding of the scientific method. But what of incoming students who haven't had that exposure? How are the classes that teach you of the scientific mindset, procedures, thought processes? Do you feel prepared enough to take on a solid research project of your own?

This is a little difficult for me to answer because I have a bit of a background in research, but I will try to answer it anyway. I wouldn't say the FIRE program really teaches you the scientific method from the ground up. We've done analysis of different parts of scientific papers, which would help you if you have almost never read them before. They also bring in potential FIRE mentors in Meet and Greet sessions so you can see who you like if you're unsure. So, I would say they expect a very rudimentary understanding of the scientific method but will teach you how to read and critically analyze literature and help you in finding an area of interest.

Anyone else interview in October and still waitlisted? :\ I literally have not moved on the waitlist at all ahhhh

Congratulations!! It seems that you are one of the lucky few to be chosen for the few interview spots left, lol.

You few, you happy few, you last of interviewees...

*Well currently in tears* I finally got a call today from UCF for an II!! Thank you admissions committee for believing in me!!
Congratz!

If you don't mind my questions: When were you EFI, are you IS or OOS, what are your stats?

Efi October stats are below average, research experience like no other, tons of EC, great letter writers!

Does this smile eventually leave my fave 😉 dream come true! Now to prove that I want to make a difference at UCF!!! So happy and grateful to even be given a chance!

Congrats! If you think you love UCF now just wait until your interview day! Also, since everyone goes out of their way to make you feel at ease you really have the opportunity to relax and be yourself and let you interests/passions shine through. Good luck :luck: You will do great! 🙂

UCF is the school that believes in you when no one else will. I doubted my chances of ever going to medical school (seriously). So far I have 0 other interviews and nothing but rejections...

But UCF interviewed me in october and accepted me in november. It was the only school who saw me for who I was and gave me a chance 🙂 I wish the best of luck on your interview.

Just the response from you guys makes me feel good! I live down the street own a house within 5 mins, do research across the street I stare at the building everyday! I'm so excited! If you guys have any recommendations for interview and would PM me i would be so appreciative!

Pre-interview rejection email received this morning. EFI back in August. 🙁 Good luck to everyone still in it!

What does that mean for people who were not rejected? Are we still in the running, or is UCF just closing out the applications slowly?

Earlier REL posted that the last interview would go out no later than the 20th. So it's possible some of us are still in the running, but I'd imagine they're sending out rejections in batches. EFI in August and not a word here since. Best of luck to everybody!

The committee has a final II list, but I dont have it yet. So file updates wont do anything. They have given several batches of those that they will not be able to interview, but with today being an interview day time to process them has been very limited. Thank you for your application this year, it has been a strong application year. I appreciate all of the professional interactions on this thread as well as all of the positivity. Let me know how I can help.

Blerg. Just got my rejection.

This played in my head when I saw the email. www.sadtrombone.com

Thanks for following the thread and offering so much feedback this cycle, Rel. Everyone appreciates your openness.

Thank you! You all need to know the sitch so you can make the right decision. I wish we had a 180 person class and that we could take you all!! I wish you well!!

I'm very crestfallen by this rejection. I did all but one of the requested improvements to my application. Time to prepare for the next cycle. :hardy:

Keep your chin up! I was rejected during my first application, but was accepted my second. I did however skip a cycle to improve my MCAT and take graduate coursework. Before you re-apply it may be worth thinking about taking time to make sure that your application is stronger than it was this current year...and if you do the reward will be there. Having said that, there is no shortage of people who applied two consecutive years and were accepted their second time around. Best of luck!

Thats me! I applied last year, had 1 interview, no acceptances. This year I had 3 interviews! I did improve my mcat, gpa, ECs, LORs etc. during the time between application cycles

Got the rejection, a top choice for me so I'm certainly disappointed. As much as I would like to attend, I hope I am not applying next year.
