2013-2014 University of Central Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
silly question but you would only get the email if you were accepted already, right?
When I was waitlisted last year I never got an email regarding financial aid. If you come off the wait list they'll probably work something out for you at that point. No point in doing that work if you decide to go elsewhere.

I doubt no email means no award at this point. UCF tires to give everyone at least something, if they can. I was accepted somewhat early, too, and turned in my FAFSA early as well. It probably takes time to prepare these individually and they're probably not sent out as a mass email. Don't sweat, just keep an eye on your email 🙂

Another thing to note is that I've already turned in my physical exam form, immunizations, and all the other paperwork (to my knowledge) for which they've asked so far. You'll need titers checked and PPD's so take a look at the immunization forms now because it could take a while to get everything you need. The whole acceptance process involved graduating from each "house" in order to matriculate (i.e., admissions, student services, financial services, perhaps diversity and equity for some, etc.)... and we thought AMCAS and secondaries were all it took.

I just want to clarify though that you definitely do NOT have to do all your health paperwork before getting the fin aid award or matriculation. It's a good idea to take a look at everything just so you can plan appropriately (most schools are going to require the same things anyway) but I am OOS and won't do mine until I know for sure where I'm going. It didn't affect my award notice at all.

Nevermind...award email was in my junk mailbox the whole time 🙂

Dang, just checked my spam folder after your post, still nothing. Waiting on pins and needles! I had made myself content thinking we wouldn't hear anything until mid-April but now I keep checking my email 🙂

accepted in in 2013, and my aid was in my spam folder. I was using my schools email so I didnt even know i had a spam folder. I was kind of bummed by the award package, but it is bc it is merit based not need based 🙁

Holy Financial Aid Award, Batman! This program sure knows how to recruit. Keep an eye on your email, C/O 2018!

Preach it! I don't know how any other school could compete with UCF's award letter. I'm having my mind swayed to become a Floridian.

Got my fin aid 2 days ago; it was also in my spam folder. Generous scholarship. UCF rules, point blank and period.

I hope I get mine today! I keep checking my inbox and spam folder just in case. OOS so really need some Financial Aid love! 😍

Hey everyone. MS3 here. Just wanted to congratulate all of the acceptances. Feel free to PM me with any questions, especially if you are deciding between schools. I will be honest and accurate. Feel free to express concerns as well. The admissions committee doesn't care what my opinion is, nor do i have time to figure out who any of you are.

To those who were not successful or are on wait lists. I really wish you the best of luck. I seriously hope everyone on a wait-list gets accepted and i hope those who were not successful this year will be successful next year , or will find another area that they can put their talents to use in and love just as much.

Hi. I'm just curious what's the average awarded money? Does anyone mind sharing how much money they got? Thanks.

Just withdrew my acceptance from here. GL to you guys on the WL, and congrats to those with acceptances! Wishing ya'll the best.

Finally got my Financial Aid package (showed up in my Spam this morning), not amazing but what I expected and at least it makes it practically identical to my rather expensive in state school. So now I won't feel obligated to stay at my in state due to financial reasons at least 🙂

Withdrew my acceptance. Good luck to everyone waiting- this school is awesome.

Need help... I'm stuck between 2 schools. I created new account so I could get help! I have been offered full tuition at another instate school and Ucf offered a great tuition also. The just tuition difference is 30,000 a year and 120,000 without interest between schools. I think Ucf is better for me as it has a lot to keep me but do you think that it is worth it? I'm also interested in research and the possibility of pursuing community based research and clinics so money is a factor for me! So mixed! Any input would be great!

Admitting my bias because I want ucf to call me off their waitlist....free is hard to give up

I might go with free, too. It depends on what the other school is. Also consider this: When you repay your loans, if you make 120 full payments on time (10 years), the rest of your debt is forgiven. The repayment is income based. If you start during your first year of residency, you'll knock off several years at a reduced rate. If you plan to have a long residency or adding a felloswhip to your post grad education, you may not pay all of that off in 10 years if you're making the minimum payment. You'll need to sit down and spreadsheet this and use appropriate loan calculators. The difference in price may end up being a large portion of what you won't be paying.

It sounds like (from your post above) that you may do a family practice or IM residency without further specialization. If this is the case, you may end up paying back all of your debt before 10 years has passed and the above advice would not apply to you.

Once I get my financial aid awards for all schools, I will be doing this myself to see if it makes a difference. At that time, I can circulate my spreadsheet so others can use it in making similar decisions. I still need to look at governmental resources to make sure I fully understand the income-based repayment system.

That is a hard decision, happiness vs. monetary issues. I absolutely love UCF and it would be hard to turn down but $120,000 is a lot of money and that is before interest. What are your feelings on the other school? Do you think you could be just as happy there and succeed or do you feel like only UCF can provide what you need in terms of support, education, research opportunities? Also, do you already have a large amount of undergrad debt? If not then coming out of medical school with $120K would not be as bad and on the low end for most. I would suggest a very detailed pro/con list, rank all the factors of each school that you like and dislike and how important each of those attributes are to you, some like debt have a much greater importance than say puppy play days (although they do add to the overall happiness factor 🙂 ) I personally did this between UCF and my state school and realized the only real important reason I would stay here is to be close to my family. When it is all laid out on paper it becomes obvious where your gut is telling you to go, I had almost 3 cons for my state school to every pro for UCF.

Unfortunately, only you will know what is right for you. If you think you won't be happy or be well prepared at the other school then maybe it is worth the $120K price tag but if the schools are mostly equal to you then you should save yourself the debt!

Also, no bias here besides that I love UCF 😀

I too would like to know the details on loan repayment. Every doctor I've ever spoken with has told me to defer with "financial hardship" during residency.

While money offered is one thing, tuition cost is another. I am aware of a school in the state that is offering tuition scholarships of ~$30K but their cost is ~$16k more than UCF, so that ~$30k is whittled to ~$14k minus any scholarship that UCF offered. If UCF offered $10k, then the overall difference is ~$4k.

I really think this type of question would be best answered by a recent graduate of medical school/residency. As pre-meds we are all in the same position as you - this tug of war between saving money and going where we most want (besides some of us who are just happy we got in somewhere). I would talk to residents or new attendings and see what their thoughts are. They are the ones facing loan repayment and I believe they would have a better perspective on what the biggest deciding factor in your situation should be.

I hope you find your answer and wish you best of luck wherever you find yourself attending!

That would have been great advice back when your loan wasn't forgiven after 10 years. Part of what's occurred under the Obama administration (no political comments, please, it is what it is) is that if you work for a non-profit (in which hospitals are included), you only have to make payments for 10 years AND they are income based. I certainly plan to pay during the 3 years of residency plus the 3 years of fellowship as opposed to paying all 10 years as an attending. Now, I just have to figure out approximately how much I'd pay during those six years and if the remaining balance after 10 years at the most expensive school exceeds scholarship offers at the most generous school. Small differences in scholarship money could be a moot point; however, legislation can change, and there are often parts of legislation that we don't all understand completely (one particular new Act comes to mind), so banking on something like this may be a gamble. Nevertheless, this is something about which you should be aware if you decision is heavily based on finances.

So has waitlist movement started at all? Has anyone waitlisted in the top half of the top third been accepted lately?

I'm around the middle of the top third, haven't heard anything yet but it seems too early based on previous years. I will let you know when I do

Most movement occurs after May 15th. If you are in the top third you can expect an acceptance between that time and the beginning of June based on last year's movement.

In top half of top third here, and have not been accepted yet. Just received an email from REL yesterday stating that they were changing our AMCAS status so that they could get moving on the background checks. He said that as predicted movement in April is slow and will begin to happen closer to May 15. He also said most, if not all, of those in the top third should be accepted by the end of June. The total wait list has approx. 200 people on it, so that would make each third about 66 people (33 for top half, 33 for bottom half).

Does that include people who take themselves off for being accepted elsewhere? If not the number can be lower.

True. I was not taking into account people who remove themselves from the wait list, so it could be less.

Quick question for REL or those accepted already who might know: when does orientation start this year? And when is the White coat ceremony?

Quick question for REL or those accepted already who might know: when does orientation start this year? And when is the White coat ceremony?

Monday, August 4, is White Coat and the remainder of that week is orientation.

I am not fully aware of the details for White Coat this year, but typically it is held at the UCF main campus and I think that it begins at 9 or 10am and is over by noon. Also in the past we have done tours of the COM building that same afternoon for families of the accepted students. Details of all of this will come out early in the summer to all those accepted.

Has anyone in the top third received an email from Certiphi Screening to complete the Criminal Background Check?
