I can't be the only one that's frozen between choosing which Florida medical school to attend, and so far UCF has amazed me in almost every way (and it's significantly cheaper than all the others!).

My only concern at the moment -- and I'm sure REL can answer this -- is that UCF is not in close proximity to residencies and clinics of different specialties. UF, USF, and UM in particular have several specialties right on campus, which is excellent for someone who wants clinical experience and aspires to be an ophthalmologist, or general surgeon, or urologist, and so on. Yet, I have noticed that UCF has not had a problem matching to certain specialties in and out of Florida (Urology at USF, General and Orthopedic Surgery at UF, Neurology at UM-JMH).

Am I worrying too much over the lack of nearby clinics, or is this a valid concern that I need to take into account now and for the next four years?

I think that you have answered your own question, the match proof is there. Our primary clincal partners currently hold the residencies because they were here prior to the med school so for now they are OH or FH residencies. These are expanding greatly because a med school is now in Orlando. UCF residencies have begun this year with a 20 seat per year IM at our Osceola Regional Hospital partner. The two hosptials adjacent to the UCF COM at Lake Nona: Nemours Peds and the big VA, will house UCF residencies in pediatrics, neurology, IM, surgery, etc. What you see now is far from what you will get when you graduate. Both classes had Step 2 averges of 245 and 243, throw that together with the FIRE module, many national accolates, an ultra supportive community, and a collaborative leadership and student partnership and you end up with 90 for 90 getting residencies, 5 for 5 in urology & opthal. The new MSAR shows us at mostly at 1 or 2 within the state exchanging in many categories with UF in the metrics, volunteerings, and cost, ie: SGPA (1/2) - UF/UCF; GPA - UF/UCF; MCAT - (all 32 except for 2 programs); Med Vol - UCF/UM-USF-FIU; Comm Vol - FSU-FIU; Rsrch: UM/UCF; low Tuit/Fees - FSU/UCF; Cost of Attend - UCF/FSU; Avg Debt - UCF/UF.

So, um, where's the risk? Orlando? Nope, plenty to do. Travel? Easy to travel by car, airplane, or even vessel. Oh, yeah, we're new. I wonder what their motive is in telling you that? They obviously havent looked at the outcomes. Imagine when we're "not new," like about the time YOU grauate.

Shudnt need to sign leases for several weeks unless you are accepted to an early start school.

I've got a little bit of time, but my wife has to take a job soon...my nightmare is getting a call while driving the moving truck up there haha

There are definitely tons of specialist clinicians in Orlando, including those in competitive specialties. I'm sure you can shadow them and get good experience to talk about during residency interviews. Also, you can probably do a clinical rotation with them. If they're not affiliated with UCF, I'm sure UCF would work with you to get them affiliated. Why wouldn't they? They want as much reach and diversity as students do. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Yes I thought nothing would change my mind! The decision is based soley on money. Ugh I've gone back and forth for a month! Rel thank you for such an amazing time! Ucf truly picks their students individually and reads the whole application! If your thinking of applying DO IT! I will still be around as my research project that I want to continue is right next store! Good luck guys!

Oh that darn money thing :-\ I hope you end up really loving the school you go to! I don't envy you having to make that choice, that's a tough one 🙁

So for every $10k difference in loans it's about $100 in monthly repayment. While you think money is a big thing, it isnt unless there is a huge gap, even then if they have it all and money is the only difference....it's only money. You will all make it back rapidly if you are disciplined. My daughter paid back her slightly over $100k during her 3 years of residency. It just depends upon how you want to live. Money is a secondary factor when choosing a medical program. Some have a hard time with understanding this.

Very true, I guess it just depends on how much the difference is and how much you think your overall happiness and success will be negatively impacted by choosing the less expensive option. I feel very lucky in that UCF will cost the same as my instate school so that I won't have to make a decision based on monetary reasons. Personally, I know I will be happier and more successful at UCF and that UCF will care about me as a student. My state school gives the impression that you are lucky to even be allowed to turn in an application and that once you are in you are on your own and they don't care what happens to you. All of which makes my decision that much easier...if only my family wouldn't be >3000 miles away 🙁 Luckily, they are very supportive and all want me to do what is best for me 🙂

I was accepted off of the waitlist today! In state: upper half of the middle 1/3! I could not be happier!

We did move about 15 FL folks off WL today, did also move 3-4 from upper and middle 1/3 due to begining admitted to early start schools who wanted to be here. No probs this wont affect my predictions. Likely will be into lower-upper 1/3 maybe by Friday......we're movin folks.

Sure hope to get that call soon!!! 😀 (lower half of upper third). Thanks again Rel for keeping us updated, you've been as helpful as anyone could ask for.

that's good news, hoping for a lot of movement

Likewise! Upper half of top third here; cannot wait to move to Orlando 😀

I've been a couple times to visit friends, but there is SO much more to explore!

Big happening - mall, restaurants, hotels starting to be built at Lake Nona - most opening Summer 2015, soon after VA. The next phase of building is upon us!

Praying for everyone today! Congrats to those accepted! FYI I do have my house and room for rent! Want to live in really big house with really big closet! Come take over my room! I also have the other master for rent also! All moving in would be first year med students!

Bottom half of the upper third here. How's it looking today? I'm so antsy. Ready to get in and accept that acceptance!!

How is the waitlist looking for out-of-staters? I'm really hoping to move to FL soon 🙂

That was really nice that you did that for those few folks in the middle third that might have missed the chance due to their early start elsewhere. I can think of one program near by with an early start that I would certainly forgo in favor of UCF.

For the rest of you, I did decline my acceptance here at UCF and will attend another school. It was not easy. It makes me feel better to see more of you guys getting accepted. My decision had nothing to do with UCF. It was all about my forward momentum where I currently am. Had it been between UCF and any other program in this state (other than my current one), I would have not only attended UCF, but I would have declined all other interview and second look invitations. Good luck everyone!

REL,

Does this mean that UCF has caught up and is now on track with previous years' WL movement? In the last update you said activity up to that point was slower than normal.

REL,
Just a quick clarification. I think I remember during the bus ride you said that when a resident drops their spot is filled with another resident. Are there two separate wait lists for out of state and in state?

I think that's right. I remember him saying that no more than 25% of students are from out of state.. Or was it 30%?

I'll most likely be looking in early July, possibly early June. Depends on how this all plays out.
