2013-2014 University of Chicago (Pritzker) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It says the FB group is for class of 2018. So does that mean all those who join are matriculating to Pritzker? Wouldn't it be more appropriate to join when you are 100% sure you are matriculating?

Because of the name?

No. The purpose of it is to try and provide information to the potential students. There are administrators and current students in there answering our questions and telling us about events at the school.

I'm sure a lot of students will be vacating the group once they decide on a different school, but just as a reference the Class of 2017 group still has ~140 members in it.

I interviewed at the end of January and was recently continued. I got a letter in the mail saying I was continued, but the application portal status page just says "Interview Complete." Is this the case for all continued people? Just wondering...

Yeah that's what my portal says as well. Interviewed second week of January. Continued via snail mail - letter dated 2/13

How much does the wait list move and when does movement typically begin. *sorry if it has been asked already.

If I was already accepted a couple months back without a scholarship offer, does anyone know if there's still a chance I could receive one?

I was accepted without a scholarship myself, and was wondering this. The answer is *yes, I received my initial financial aid offer today from Pritzker and it includes a 140K scholarship. The asterisk is because the phrasing in the letter is a bit ambiguous as to whether it's a merit scholarship, a needs-based scholarship, or some kind of hybrid. But one way or the other, it's a scholarship, so yes it's still possible to receive one. (Plus, I imagine scholarships become available if/when others who have received one withdraw?)

Current student here. Just a comment on the FB group size - I wouldn't say there are any lingering students who matriculated elsewhere. Instead, the "extras" are students from other years who from time to time answer questions or tell us about upcoming events. If you matriculate, the group certainly remains active and is helpful for communicating about academic and social matters!

Interviewed late January, continued by mail. Sorry if this has already been answered, but what does it mean to be continued at this point in the application process? Is it essentially a waitlist?

Thanks!

I was continued way back in November and am still waiting for any additional news. The way Pritzker explains it is that all continued applicants are continuously re-evaluated throughout the cycle and can get pulled off the "continued" list for acceptance at any time. Once they have finished with interviews and accepted their target I think they then create the waitlist with the continued applicants and go from there.

With all that being said, I don't think I've seen a report on SDN of any continued applicant being accepted up to this point in the cycle. I would send updates / interest letters as you feel is appropriate - they seem to be receptive to them. Good luck, I'll be anxiously waiting alongside you!

Are all continued applicants notified via snail mail? I interviewed back in December and have yet to hear anything....

I would call them. I was told if you interviewed by my date (first week of January), you should hear back by the latest February 28th. I received my continued letter via snail mail.

I just called (interviewed in November, haven't heard a word) and they said they have been back logged and haven't gotten to my app yet and that others are in the same boat as me so Im sure its the same for you. Hope this helps

Good to know - thanks for posting

Any word on the next committee meeting/round of acceptances? They haven't released anything for like a month now.

I know the letter said that continued people will hear something by March 15 (I think..? got the letter in October), or otherwise will be waitlisted. Does anyone know if the waitlist is ranked?

I'm strictly making an educated guess but I can't imagine many more acceptances will be given out. It's about a month til second look and the Facebook group has well over 150 accepted applicants in it for a class of 88. There have been a few people added over the last week or two but the additions have severely slowed down.

I was thinking that since Harvard, Duke, Columbia, Yale, and Penn released their acceptances the within the last couple of weeks, some people may withdraw and leave more spots for the continued peeps such as myself. A girl can dream🙂

Good point! I don't know if people will wait until before or after second look to do that though! Especially considering how generous Pritzker is with scholarships. But either way I'm sure there will be a lot of movement in the next 2 months. I believe USNWR showed 252 (2013 data) accepted students for Pritzker so if ~160-180 people have been accepted then I would assume that there still will be a lonnnnng ways to go.

Fingers crossed for yall still waiting! :xf:

I apologized if this has been asked, but where did you send updates??

In my continued letter (I got mine in feb) it said that we would be continued until May 15, and then they would form a waitlist. Looks like we have a wait ahead.

Uchicago is now ranked 11, out of the top 10. Time to withdraw my acceptance.

Sad thing is that someone might actually value rank that much to actually do such a thing. But then again, would you really want that person coming to your school?

Sooooooo....who am I going to be seeing at revisit weekend in less than four weeks!?

I saw this and just thought I'd spread a little hope. I interviewed at the end of September, was continued at the end of November, and was just accepted this week. So it is moving, if anyone was wondering!
Congratulations!!! :claps:

Did you get a phone call, email, or letter to notify you that you were accepted off the continued list?

Congrats! Thanks for letting us know.

Hope you guys have a great time! Unfortunately I'll be up at the Evanston hospital and won't be able to attend any of the events.

It'll be a blast! As always, feel free to ask us any questions!

Sent from my phone, please forgive any typos

I PMed you a question if you have the time

Hey guys I'll be applying this cycle but have heard mixed opinions about the Hyde park area. Can someone comment on what the area/ general experience at pritzker is like ?

I really enjoy Hyde Park, it has a great community feel. I planned on moving to South Loop but now my plans are to stay in Hyde Park for the next 3 years. Before moving here I was worried about crime and safety but honestly that has been pretty much a non-issue. It is not one of the safest neighborhoods in Chicago but the last statistics I saw put the crime rate about the same as areas downtown. Yes, some of the areas around Hyde Park are some of the worst areas in Chicago but you can avoid these without too much trouble. I walk around Hyde Park frequently and have never felt unsafe.

Thank you for responding, that's good to know. I went to undergrad in one of the highest crime cities and was robbed at gunpoint on campus so I'd prefer to not go through that again. But that doesn't sound too bad, thanks for the response!

Where do students go out when they are free? Do they usually head downtown or stay in Hyde Park? If downtown, what modes of transportation do students usually take? How long does it take?

thanks

I would say most people go downtown or to the north side, but there are places to go in HP as well. The bar scene is pretty minimal, but there are a good number of decent restaurants.

As far as transportation, I'd say an overwhelming number of students use the CTA (public transit). Most MS1s live in the Regents Park building or somewhere nearby in HP, and there's a bus (the #6) which runs directly from HP to downtown on an express route. It takes about 20-25 minutes to get to the heart of downtown. It obviously doesn't beat driving, but as far as public transit goes it's pretty convenient.

If it's super late at night, I'd say most people take cabs back to HP. That usually runs ~$20-30 from the loop, but split between 2-3 people it's not so bad.

Hope that answers some of your questions.

Idiam's acceptance after being continued a couple of weeks ago got me hopeful, but it's gotten so quiet again!! I really hope there are more acceptances before May 15th!! 😎

How do you find out if you are continued? I interviewed in January and have not heard back yet.

So I'm now over four months post-interview with no decision. 🙁 I've talked to admissions and was told the committee hasn't reached a decision on my file, but that circumstances not specific to my application have resulted in a pool of applicants who have yet to undergo committee review, so there are others in the same situation. The very nice lady I spoke to encouraged me to submit an update letter so the committee would know I was still interested. While this sounds great in theory, I'm a non-trad and the only update I could really offer is that I've continued working the same job without being fired. Would there be any benefit to submitting a letter of interest/intent if I have no real updates to include?

Sorry, I don't check this often. I am currently living in Denmark, so I got an e-mail that he tried to call my cell phone (which obviously doesn't work over here). I'd assume most people get a phone call!

And thanks everyone! VERY excited! However, I unfortunately won't be able to attend revisit due to living abroad (a bit too far of a commute for me, haha) and I had some questions about housing. For those of you who decided to live in grad-student housing, what prompted that decision and are you happy with it? Same goes for you who lived off-campus/in Regents! Also, as I'm not attending revisit, I'm a little concerned about finding a roommate(s). Any guidance on this?
