2013-2014 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey guys, just a reminder, if you need help with anything (except 1 thing, see below), just email me at [email protected] i'm an m2 and know how much this time can suck, especially if you havent been accepted etc. if you have an upcoming interview or anything just let me know and maybe i can help you out, obviously i have no role in decision making but can give you general advice that worked for me (not only at u of I, but also the other places i interviewed etc).

with regard to the caveat--i honestly don't know if letters of interest do anything--for all i know they may just get thrown away, or the equivalent e.g. placed in 'your folder' which could very well be a wasteland of paper ne'er to be seen by day. of course, i don't think they do any harm, and i sure as hell sent some out during my cycle (albeit, not to uic) so go ahead, but i probably won't respond if you email me re: interest letters. best of luck regardless, just work your ass off and you'll eventually make it (ps if you haven't already, and are worried about not getting accepted, check out legit post-bacc's, ie university of cincinnati and whichever other ones are hardcore SMP's nowadays, especially if you have >=33 on the mcat).

the first two are kind of confusing... but from what I heard:

Applicant in progress - you are waiting for review (apparently UIC reviews your application multiple times, so it has to pass through two or three people before you get an II)
Applicant in process - you are being reviewed and will receive a decision soon (interview, rejection, or pre-interview hold)
(many students go back in forth between process and progress as they are being reviewed by multiple Adcom members)

ApplicaTION is in process - you are on pre-inteview hold =/
-- but it's better than rejection

Final Decision Made blah blah.... - rejection

Even if the meanings are confusing, I know this is for sure

applicant in process > applicant in progress
applicant in process/progress >> application is in process

Thanks for the clarification, I appreciate it! Now if only I could get an interview instead of all these pre-interview holds

Does anyone know how many students receive the University of Illinois College of Medicine Scholarship? The number of students winning the others is listed, but they do not for this one.

Chicago assignment M1-M4 with College of Medicine scholarship!!!

rfenzo, the letter I received stated that around 10% of admits are offered the College of Med Scholarship.

Super unexpected but as an in-state applicant, UIC just jumped to the top of my list 😀

Anyone know how much it is for or have a link for more info on this scholarship?

Does "a final decision made" pre-int. mean a rejection for sure...

I know I've asked a lot of questions on here, but how much do students generally pay for off campus housing? I cannot seem to get access on the website

Are these scholarships given post-FAFSA? Or are they typically for minorities?

I go to UIC for undergrad and it can be anywhere from 500 to 800 per person plus utilities. I do not know about Urbanas.

www.domu.com is a good resource to get an idea of where neighborhoods are relative to UIC and what rent is like in that area.

Thanks for the reply. As an undergrad, do you know how many med students live near campus versus further away?

I'm from the suburbs. If I was to go to UIC, I'd prob choose to live in a nice part of Chicago (considering the efficiency of public transportation) so that I can enjoy what the city offers during my 4 years there. The only down sides of this choice would be the time required to go back/forth and possibly an increase in rent due to location.

If you go to UIC and live by campus it better to live east and north of campus. West and south of campus is were all the crime reports happen.

I submitted my secondary in November and I still have the "awaiting Admissions Officer letter review-" status. What does this mean? Have they not gotten to my file?

Mine was like that for the longest time. It took them forever to get my letters I have NO idea why. Since feb 3rd it now says "Applicant in Process". Hope you hear a change soon!

Has there been any mention about when Second Look will be?

Does anyone know if UIC does silent rejections, or do they let you know one way or the other?

It just changed. Thank you for the input. I think that I need to apply earliernextyear!

Interviewed on the 29th of last month, just checked the status and it changed to "Decision Pending" I thought they didn't meet until the 20th or the 27th of this month 😵

I am pretty sure your status gets changed to "Decision Pending" when your interviewers submit their reports. It just means that you will be presented at the next adcom meeting which will be later in the month as you mentioned.

Does anything need to be sent in for fin aid aside from the FAFSA?

So... I just received an email today asking me to re-interview. Any ideas as to if this is a bad sign?

This is what they said:
"The College of Medicine Committee on Admissions would like to invite you for a 2nd interview here at the university in Chicago. The evaluations during your last interview date were inconsistent and we would like to re-interview you sometime during the week of March 17-21."

better than a rejection or wait list.

Intriguing. Some people on SDN have been rejected Post-interview so this is definitely a more positive sign. I suspect you had 2 faculty members and 1 student interview you?

Pure speculation: The two faculty members had very differing opinions of your candidacy, essentially canceling out. So this next interview(s) would actually be the deciding factor?

I was supposed to be interviewed by three, however the student never showed up.

I was sort of thinking the same thing. However, I'm a little torn as to how to feel about it. On one hand, I'm not denied and one of my interviewers was wooed successfully, but on the other hand, the second interviewer wasn't a fan in the least and I could bomb the next interview.

One of my interviewers spoke with a thick accent, so I failed to answer many of his questions strictly because I could not understand him so, hopefully, that was the issue. Oh boy, this is fun.

this school is so unpredictable. people get II on random days, people who submitted before me and after me got rejected or II. yet I'm still sitting here waiting to see a status change. been complete since September with "applicant in progress". I know someone posted on here a couple years ago had that status until March and got accepted. So I'm just banking on that right now.

I wish they could give me a clear cut decision as to where I am right now in there application process.

How much does the student interview matter? I always thought that all three interviews were equally important.

Does anything need to be sent in for fin aid aside from the FAFSA?

I don't think so...nothing is listed on the financial aid website and I haven't received any other paperwork. Best to doublecheck

I just got my site preference card in the mail--no return address or postage so I had to pay the mail room before they would give it to me. Well played UIC...

They sent my site preference card to Philadelphia, Texas... I got it after a bit of a delay but seems they have some problems in the mail room

Is it possible to receive grants from this university post-FAFSA?

Hi everyone! I received an II earlier today ..offered only Chicago location either 2/24 or 2/28. I believe I submitted my secondary 11/12. In state.

If any of you have interviewed here and would like to provide any advice, feel free to send me a message. I would appreciate any info! [:

Ditto!!!

REALLY nervous...at this point in the game is it an interview for waitlist position? From the sounds of it...seems like a lot of people have been assigned to Chicago! (sorry if someone already mentioned this)

My guess is all is still fair game, esp since people might decide to attend med school elsewhere. Also, just to clarify, interviewing in Chi does not mean you will be assigned there.

Yeah I know (I wish!)....I was just looking through the past few pages and just felt like those who submitted their requests already got that campus. Will be happy with anything at this point 🙂

For those of you accepted if you don't mind sharing your experience puhleaseee lemme know!

I already have my placement, Chicago Campus <-- I heard back in early January, but I was accepted in October & filled out my placement card in December.

As to my interview, I had 2 faculty/ADCOM interviews and 1 student interview. My interviews were relaxed and conversational w/ no nit picking about things like that C I got as a freshmen 🙂 I got a really good vibe from the students, they were friendly and seemed happy/healthy. However, I didn't get that good of a sense of the campus & we didn't get a tour of the hospital either. There seemed to be a lot of construction/repair of the facilities going on at the time I interviewed. Their gym looked nice tho.

I am holding other acceptances atm, I may be withdrawing from UIC soon... not that I didn't like the school mind you, I thought it was great. Best of Luck!
Thank you so much for your response!!! (And not waiting until May 15th to withdraw) IS or OOS? Was there anything that you wish you knew ahead of time? Did they ask you anything unusual? How did you prepare?

I'm interviewing Monday morning 2/24, if any of you are coming from out of town and have issues or questions feel free to contact me. I live in the area-ish.

anyone has any opinions on the other three campus? I was accepted recently, so I dont think I will be assigned to Chicago. I went to Peoria for interview. The other two campuses,, have absolutely no idea.

I also interviewed recently. From what the student interviewer told me, Rockford is for rural medicine and they don't have a residency program. Peoria is the second choice after Chicago for most people. She said that she doesn't know whether you can select Urbana. Urbana is mostly for MD/PhD's I think? I went there for undergrad. Also, if you go to Peoria you'll be in Urbana for M1.

Does anyone know if the strikes at UIC are delaying the adcom from meeting today?...Are they even meeting today?
