2013-2014 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's hard to say - how did the rest of your interview go? Did you and your interviewer connect and did he/she seem to like you? Did you just blank on one question or was it several questions? If it was just that one thing and your interviewer seemed to like you otherwise, I wouldn't sweat it too much.

I'm assuming you had 3 interviews right? Making one mistake in one interview I do not believe will amount to much if you did well otherwise. I felt like I made a few mistake in my interviews and was accepted. No worries, hang in there

Completely blanked on a very basic question today about universal healthcate and said "I don't know", how negatively will this affect my application :/
I had an interview at UIC that I would describe as... painful at best. It was clear that my interviewer and I were not compatible for even a casual conversation. She asked a couple of basic questions that I completely struggled with. About halfway through I started to lose concentration because I could sense myself going down in flames, and that only made it worse. Result: accepted. Lesson: don't sweat it.

Still didn't get anything in the mail. OOS, not that far away. Interviewed Sept +Additional correspondence.
I guess I'll call the office if it doesn't come tomorrow since that is the two week deadline from the status change...

Any idea on what the IS financial aid is like here? I've loved Illinois for a long time, but it doesn't seem like we get an in-state break (Obviously OOS doesn't either).

We're in the same boat, buddy. 🙁

Seems to me like it is mostly just loans for everybody, with some scholarships available perhaps? Total COA is pretty high especially OOS, but I really liked everything about the school.

Congrats! Mind sharing where you live? A couple people are still waiting and we're curious.
I'm from the Chicago suburbs. Not sure why it took so long to get to me when most other people in Chicago got it a few days ago.

Acceptance packet in the mail today!

IL resident, temporarily OOS (Boston) for school.
Interviewed October+Additional Correspondence.

Has anyone received an II lately? Does anyone know how many secondaries they send out?

I never received a complete email - anyone else? My application says complete when I log in to the secondary application, but I haven't heard anything from them! After browsing through the forum I discovered other people received complete emails 🙁

FINALLY GOT MY FAT PACKET!! My parents got it in Boston. When I called admissions, they said they sent the letter out on Tuesday. This means that the letters are being sent in waves since some people had already gotten their letter on Tuesday.

Accepted!!! 😀 Packet finally came in the mail today.
Will be going here!

Lol I have a guess of who you interviewed with. I also had a bit of a stress interview and thought my chances were pretty terrible but got accepted.

Congrats to all the acceptees, and to echo Kaushik, feel free to post any questions you have!

Status change today from "applicant in progress" to "applicant in process" so it seems that there is indeed a difference.

I was complete mid-late September btw.

Mine finally changed to "in process" but I was complete way back in August.

Same here! Mine says "progress" but I can't imagine they haven't reviewed mine seeing as I've been complete since 8/1. I am confused about the difference bet progress vs process, if there is one!

I think in progress means your application is complete. I think in process means they are ready to review your file.

I don't think they review files just in order of complete date but I am not really sure, obviously. But I don't think anyone goes straight from "in progress" to interview invite/rejection, I believe everyone goes through "in process" first.

For the ones who went to "in process" today- are you IS or OOS?

For any of the current med students, could you possibly comment on the access to research at UIC? How hard is it to find quality research projects, and is there enough time to work on these (During the summer or otherwise)?

Does anyone know how long we have to respond to the offer of acceptance? This is definitely a top choice of mine but I'm still waiting to hear back from a few other schools so I'm not sure if they want us to respond immediately or until we know for sure.. thanks

It's definitely not difficult to find a research project you're interested in working on. You can approach faculty and attendings pretty easily and if they're not doing anything, they can point you in the right direction. Keep in mind that, because of the number of med schools in Chicago, you can also do research at these other institutions. Funding in that case would have to be worked out with the PI at that institution though.

If you're looking to do research between M1 and M2 years, there's definitely plenty of time to do so. I think I had a longer summer break in med school than I did in undergrad! If I remember correctly, we were done with M1 year at the beginning of May and M2 year didn't start till the middle of August. Some people do research during the school year as well, but I'd recommend waiting till M2 year to do that -- that way, you can focus on learning to manage time well during M1 year before potentially overwhelming yourself.

Unless things have changed since I applied 3 years ago, you can hold multiple acceptances till May 15th. If I were you, I'd accept the offer now and not wait to hear back from other schools. I'm pretty sure your deposit gets refunded if you end up deciding to matriculated elsewhere.

To add to Kaushik's comment, generally schools give you two weeks to respond from when you received the offer (there should be something about it in your acceptance letter), so you should definitely accept and then, if you receive multiple acceptances (and I certainly wish you luck with that), indulge into the awesome process of choosing which school to go to 🙂.

I'm IS. Also I had several issues with my letters of recommendation. I submitted back in mid-August, but it was late September by the time I got everything straightened out, so that's when I'm saying I was complete.

Really hoping for some good news here soon! How long does it typically take to go from "applicant in process" to II?

ive been in process for months now

i dont think there is a typical timeline, being in process is just as much of a waiting game as in progress
hoping for an interview myself

Where do you see these designations? On the supplemental app status page I have all the boxes checked and this "Your Application has been successfully submitted. Your IPAY Transaction ID is: ****. Although you may still view your application, no further changes will be allowed"

I know there's the https://mercury.comd.uic.edu/appstat/ website, but it has never worked for me, says its not loadable!

II yesterday night! Completed 09/18. stats 4.0 31. Available dates were the 7th and 18th of January. Excited to get the interview but the scheduled interview is two months away and seems a little late in the cycle. Anyone care to put in their two words on January interviews?

this is from an older thread but is pretty helpful. Ive been stuck at Applicant in process since october

A. "Application Not Complete" = Secondary not yet complete.

B. "Application in Process" = You are complete. --> Goto C.

C. "Applicant in Process" = Your file is being reviewed, 3 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Select Interview Date" = You are good enough for an interview. --> Goto D.
2. "Application in Process" = You are not good enough to grant an interview yet, but might be later on in the cycle. Check back periodically. --> Go back to B.
3. "Final Decision Made ..." = You are not good enough. --> Goto X.

D. "Select Interview Date" (A grid of dates shows up) = Call and schedule an interview date, after which "Interview Scheduled on ... " shows up. After the interview, Goto F.

F. "Decision Pending" = File pending review at the next adcom meeting (every 3rd Thursday of the month). There are 2 options from here, depending on the month:
1. Before May. --> Goto M.
2. On or After May. --> Goto N.

M. Before May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Final Decision Made ... " --> Goto S.
2. "Decision Pending" (No Status Change) + "We'll keep reviewing you" Email (a few days later) = You are a good candidate, but not good enough to grant an acceptance yet. UIC will keep reviewing you at every adcom meeting. --> Go back to F.

N. On or After May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Final Decision Made ... " You are (very likely) rejected. --> Goto X.
2. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. --> Goto Y.
S. There are 2 additional conditions from here:
1. There is an "Additional Correspondences" Tab in the upper-right corner on your status page AND you get a CBC Email (a few days later) = You are (very likely) accepted. --> Goto Z.
2. There is no "Additional Correspondences" Tab and/or you don't get the CBC Email = Rejection. [Note: This is tricky. The CBC email usually comes a few days after (1-4 is the consensus) the status change. Be patient. Sometimes, the email never comes, which might be because you already had a CBC done due to an acceptance at another school. In some instances, the CBC Email even comes after the snail-mail. If after a week, neither the tab nor the CBC email shows up, it's very likely a rejection. You've probably already received snail-mail by now alerting you to it.] --> Goto X.

X. "Final Decision Made ..." = Rejection ... Wait for a "Thin Letter" via snail-mail.

Y. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. ... The CBC Email no longer acts as an indicator of an acceptance. If you get accepted off of the waitlist, then Goto Z, else Goto X.

Z. "Final Decision Made ..." + "Additional Correspondences" Tab + CBC Email = (very likely) Acceptance ... Wait for a "Fat Packet" via snail-mail. [Note: Sometimes CBC emails come after the packet. CBC emails also might never arrive if you got an acceptance to another school that also does CBC through AMCAS.]

I don't think a January interview should hurt you. Last year I feel like people were accepted through late March/April.

Also, to people who are interviewing (at least in Chicago), be sure to check out the interviewee student hosting program - I know a bunch of students who are excited to host 🙂!

Interview Invite received yesterday (8 November), Interview scheduled in Chicago for 12 November (somebody must have just cancelled).

AMCAS verified 25 August
Secondary Invitation 27 August
Secondary submitted 22 September
Application complete 25 September

In-state applicant, 3.5/35

Could any current students in the UMed program possibly share their experiences with that? I was very interested and wanted to apply now that I've been accepted 🙂

Can anybody recommend any good hotels to stay at for Chicago interview in December?

Anyone who interviewed on 10/18 heard back yet?

Can anybody recommend any good hotels to stay at for Chicago interview in December?
Isn't there a Marriott right across the street? Call and see if they give discounts for students who are interviewing! 😀 good luck! Also, are you IS or OOS?

The above poster is correct. There is a Marriott walking distance from the school (walking there from the hospital myself tomorrow night for a conference haha). I would also inquire about student hosts (and save some money - there are a bunch of students from all 4 years that live near the school and again you can walk to your interview). Even if it is a place couple of miles away, I would not fret as Chicago is very public transport accessible - Pink Line CTA is very fast and a block away from the college and Blue line is 4 blocks away along with tons of CTA bus lines...

Sure! UMed has definitely been one of my favorite parts of medical school so far, and I think it's just really getting started now.

So far, we've done a few seminars to help us get ready to conduct community-based participant research. We've also chosen community organizations to work with that we'll be conducting our projects with for the next 4 years. Basically the goal is to work with the community to identify needs and then work as a team with them to improve the community. Some of these organizations are directly health-related, but many of them focus more on education. UMed students' role might skew towards planning, carrying out or evaluating the project, depending on the individual project. Seminars also continue to help us understand the research process and the needs of the community.

So yeah, right now we're just starting out on the actual research process, but I've really been enjoying the activities so far and the group of people. Let me know if you have any other questions, hope that helps.

Thanks for the info and advice. I had completely forgotten about how easy it is to use public transportation in Chicago............but then again I am visiting from car obsessed Southern California :smack:

Seems like several II went out around this week last year, though there were 2 IIs from last week on this thread. Hopefully the 3-day weekend slowed them down and more will roll out soon.

Recieved an II yesterday! Complete around early September. 3.64 cGPA, 36 MCAT.
