2013-2014 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is something I am also wondering. Can you describe the review process a bit (i.e. how applications are reviewed/categorized/re-reviewed)? Are updates (publications/work experiences) something that can realistically help bring an application out of limbo?
I am also wondering about this too! Also, why are some earlier applicants still under review while others have their files review complete? What makes some files require further reviews?
Also, I have to say this, it's ironic to see how much michigan tweets about not believing sdn yet helps us on sdn with our questions 🙂 i sure hope umms2017 truly belongs to michigan 🙂 thank you for answering our questions here! 😀

For what interview dates are they currently offering? January? February? What was the last date offered?

As relatively new students not on the Admissions Committee, the actual logistics of pre-II application review are still beyond what we know, but candidates are definitely reviewed more than once during this phase. Final decisions (post-interview) are all made on a regular basis at the AEC meetings, and generally updates aren't considered in this phase. A lot of the selection for UMMS is made during the pre-II stage, so it takes a long time to thoroughly review candidates (small interview number, but higher percentage of interviewees accepted, as opposed to schools that interview 1000+ and admit a smaller percentage of interviewees). Sending updates and expressing continued interest would be the best way to position yourself to get out of pre-II limbo if your file is still under review (updates can definitely lead to winter interview invites, even for those who were complete 4 months ago). I'm not encouraging 5000 people to submit updates this afternoon, but that would be my best advice if Michigan is your top choice school. It's hard not to be antsy, but we wish you all the best of luck with the waiting game!

11/15 and 11/22 are already full and scheduled, but later dates are still being filled/offered. The remaining interview dates on the calendar are 12/6, 12/13, 1/10, 1/17, and 2/6, and each day has ~40 interviewees.

I don't think there is a difference between these two statuses (or if the latter even exists). I believe last year it went submitted-->complete-->under review as various documents came in. The "under review" part was an automatic change once everything was processed. Then under review either goes to interview invite or file closed.

And yes, while ironic, we thought it would be a good way to make sure no false data/information is propagated (nobody has in fact enrolled yet -- you can't until April). Director Ruiz glances at this forum once a month or so and clarifies any incorrect information on the Twitter page. We are truly UMMS students 😀

Based on the tracker updates, the interview invite rate for some undergraduate schools is extremely low (between 3%-4%). For example, there are 113 applicants from Stanford and only 4 were invited for interview. I don't know if Michigan compares applicants from the same school and then picks up the top ones. If assuming that some invited are in-state applicants, it almost leaves no rooms for OOS. I may read the data wrong.

All 113 applicants may not have been reviewed yet; if for example 4 of 40 Stanford applications reviewed would yield a 10% invite rate. Obviously there's no way to know how many applications have actually been reviewed so far for any specific school, but that might be why "rates" appear low.

Sorry, late to the game here. Where is information like this published?

haha thank you! 😀 and yes, there are two separate statuses, the other one is Application Screening Completed Your application has been reviewed. At this point we are not able to offer you an interview. Your file remains "open" and eligible for additional reviews. Final decisions for all candidates will be made the first week in February. Thank you for your patience.
It does make me feel better that you don't know about this second status! 🙂 that gives me and other applicants under review some hope! 😀
Well congrats for being UMMS students, hope I can join you next year!

I stand corrected! I know of other schools that had a status similar to that last year, which in some cases led to interview invites later in the game -- didn't know Michigan provided this status that as well. If files have already been closed (according to the Twitter page) I would interpret this neutrally or positively.

That makes me feel better knowing about the other status too! This is my #1 school choice and I'd love to interview here. I just hope that they don't solely rely on scores when determining who to interview!

Although I'm sure you already know about this based on the emails, just wanted to remind you all that our twitter chat is starting in 10 minutes. Looking forward to answering your questions!

Quote from the twitter: Update:October MD decisions slated for Noon tomorrow will be released today at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time

Good luck to all expecting decisions at 2:30!!

According to the admissions tracker there are only 50 out of state interview spots left yes? sigh...

Waitlisted at dream school 🙁

Don't think this is the last you'll hear of me Michigan....I'll be back with a vengeance for residency. :biglove:

GO BLUE! I was accepted to UMMS today too! My question: can any of the other people who were accepted see the PDF of the pics of our future classmates? I have been trying to access it on the MD Tracker to no avail.

Sooooooo excited!

How are you determining this? 1. Did they update it since I last checked (yesterday)? 2. Where does it say the # of interviews remaining?
Yeah, their admissions tracker is updated. Download the powerpoint and look at the pie charts.

Congratulations! :]

Admissions uploads updated profiles for all accepted students - you should be able to find a link on your status page! You can also find a link to the Facebook group for accepted students from your status page 🙂

Addendum/Edit: The PDF is not made publicly available/isn't attached to the Admissions Tracker. I (another user of this account) removed the name of the Facebook group so that other applicants can't find/stalk it 😛

Major congrats to those who have been accepted!

Based on the admissions tracker data, there are 63 remaining interviews for IS applicants and 47 remaining acceptances. So basically, is this saying that those who receive the final interview spots have around a 75% chance of acceptance?

I sure hope to get an interview...and an acceptance!! Love this school 🙂

ofcourse not 🙂 there are so many people deferred or waitlisted (waitlisted people dont have as good of a chance as deferred people though). So, these people plus the interviewing ones sum up the total of the 47 remaining seats.

Yes, presumably it's 47 acceptances for everyone interviewed nov or later plus deferred applicants.

At the interview Director Ruiz was pretty clear that the earlier you interview the better your chances.

Ah yes. I forgot about deferred applicants.

That's sad for me then (IF I even get as far as an II!!) oh well--at least I have other options, I just really had my heart set on U of M 🙁

While the percentage of students accepted from earlier interview days is generally higher than for later interview days, nobody ever "interviews for a waitlist spot" as is the case rumored for some other schools -- there are a good number of admission offers from each interview day! Last year, several deferred candidates were eventually offered admission (can't remember the exact dates, if I recall there was a wave in December and a wave in March), but no candidates on the official waiting list were admitted when everything was said and done in May (yield was above class size, so ~10 people decided to defer for a year and join the incoming class of 2014)

So that means there's 10 fewer spots for this year?

We also have several people in our class who deferred last year -- Michigan tends to get a very high yield each year. The target for # of acceptances is the same as last year, so it shouldn't affect things much at all (we had 347 acceptance offers in my cycle, and according to the tracker it's still 347). Not to worry. It's more of a tribute to Michigan's flexibility with each person's career plans, and their admissions system accounts for those who want to do an extra year of research, work for TFA, travel, or do other crazy things with a gap year. Some other schools are very rigid/less flexible with taking a year for enrichment after you've enrolled. Accepted students will all get an email in late May/early June about the potential to defer for a year if the class size is above 170. If it's <170, they'll turn to the waitlist and not actively encourage deferrals, but you're more than welcome to ask for one.
In short, to answer your question, the extra people in each class from previous application cycles won't offset the admissions process, though it might seem that way at first.

Thanks for the clarification!

10:10 Tuesday that will, according to twitter, be "surprisingly busy"! #thereisalwayshope

Question for the adcoms/UM students watching this thread, about this twitter post:

@UMichMedAdmiss: On a less positive note, we're preparing to close several hundred more files this week. #Wishwecouldtakeeverybody!

Does that mean we will see a status change on our app page if our file is closed?

Have a feeling mine will be closed lol. Oh well. Michigan was a good dream.

You'll be invited to join the class facebook page and on there will be an updated picture profile! Also, there should be a link to the pdf on your application page
