2013-2014 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got the axe, so no news is good news for you guys I think

Email of doom... Around 330 actually which I thought was weird

Ack! No email and no phone call, also interviewed early September. No one else has mentioned having my adcom though, so maybe he doesn't call. I'm going out if town this week, so I can check my mail until Monday. Maybe a good thing. I won't be able to nurture neurotic mail checking.

Out of pure curiosity, I was wondering if you guys could give me some input on this. I know that in rolling admissions, generally, the earlier you interview, the better, since they have longer to consider and reconsider you, and generally there is more space in the class to be offered. I interviewed in early/mid November, and since it's been ~10 weeks already, would there be any theoretical preference being given to the folks who interviewed earlier, or would we all be considered simultaneously at this point? Thanks!

I interviewed around the same time as you and haven't heard back. This is a good question, although I am not sure of the answer... I don't know if they take wait time into consideration or simply the strength of the application in comparison to others. Also, I know the ability of the Adcom to come to meetings makes some difference.

Yeah, I have yet to see my adcom mentioned in this thread.

Congrats Wolffkishner29! Anyone know how full the class is currently?

I'm wondering the same thing. Interviewed late September and haven't heard anything.

Anyone brave enough to call and find out how full the class is already?

I don't know the answer either - however, it does appear that most of the acceptances that people have been posting have still been coming from Sept/Oct. I'm a late Nov. interviewee and haven't heard anything either. I think we also have to remember that while its been 9-10 weeks since interviews (for me at least...) the holidays were also in that time frame, so you can probably assume they missed a committee meeting or two.

While I also thought that initially, you should also consider the fact that it's also a time frame where they receive no new candidates to review.

Good point. It does seem though that very few Nov. interviewees have posted however - though, that could be because the population on SDN is small compared to applicant pool size.

I could be wrong-- but I had Gilliland and Brice... Gilliland was my adcom
Sometimes both of your interviewers can be on the committee, but only one will be your actual advocate. The same was true for me (and most of the people who interviewed on the same day as I did).

So if one of my interviewers was a 2nd year student, what role will they play in the candidate review and adcom meeting?

I believe the non-ADCOM interviewer will write a letter to the committee on your behalf with their takeaways from your interview. The ADCOM interviewer is the one who will be physically at the meeting discussing you.

Accepted today!! Got the call from Dr. Gettes around 5 o'clock! Interviewed early November, IS with a 3.35 GPA and a 34 MCAT. So about a 10 week turnaround time.

Congrats!

However you just opened up a can of worms as all of the worry warts in the thread are going to start waiting for calls on Mondays AND Tuesdays now.

Apologies to Alanis Morrissette on this one... "Rain on your wedding day" is not ironic. A future physician taking joy from the anxiety/discomfort of their peers is both ironic and disturbing.
I think ChemEngMD was more amused by the fact that us SDNers are constantly prowling this thread for new posts, even though the most recent post will probably just cause a lot of us to worry more (a little ironic also). I really don't think there's any malicious schadenfreude going on.

Implications and subtle meanings are often lost in text. We can prevent any escalation by not taking shots at each other.

Having said that, I am freaking out a little since I interviewed in November also, and now I'm really hoping for some good news soon since UNC's decision will determine the course of my next year.

Amen! I need to know whether to renew my lease for my apartment, and they're bugging the crap out of me to make a decision.

It must be easy to laugh at the worry worts when you receive an acceptance within 4 weeks, while people here have been waiting for months to hear anything.

Zero malice intended. I am simply pointing out the futility in trying to predict when you may hear something from the school based upon an online message board. It could literally be any time and you're only going to drive yourself mad by obsessing on these boards.

That being said - good luck to everyone still waiting and I hope you hear something soon.

Gah, it's been 4 months over here for me. I don't understand why they would need that much time to make a decision!

+1. It's been 18 weeks for me now. I love this school and it seems no news is good news (maybe?), but I really just want a decision so I can plan the next phase of my life.

The waiting and suspense is worse than asking someone out. At least you'll either get rejected or get a date the minute you ask...

I'm really bummed that I didn't get an interview here. :*( I got a secondary in December. Are they still sending out interviews? Or was this a silent rejection after taking my money lol?

I think they interview until the end of February.

Yea, they interview until the end of February. However, I do not know if they have given out all the interview invites yet or not. You might be able to call and ask.

Interviewed October 15, accepted in state November 22. Got a phone call from my adcom at 6 pm exactly that Friday night, an email the following Monday. If you haven't heard back and it's been a while, I would assume it means you are on some sort of wait list to give those interviewing through February a fair chance at admission. No news is, in that sense, good news. They try to inform you ASAP of rejection to not keep you hanging on.

Tonight's the night (and apparently maybe tomorrow night too).

Finally verified for NC residency today. Still waiting on hearing back on acceptance.

Wow, they must have really liked you. That was a really quick turnaround. A belated congratulations!

Thank you! I also live in Chapel Hill, so if I NEVER EVER want to leave home again, that is now a possibility haha. My interview day was kind of crazy - during one, I saved the day by bravely squishing a spider in the corner (the faculty member was NOT a fan of spiders) & spent half of it talking about baking cakes haha. I like to think my heroism won the day.
