2013-2014 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do people actually get a rejection letter? Or is the rejection silent?

Best of luck to you all!
I feel some sort of draw to UNC I cannot even really explain.
It was my top choice for pharmacy school when I actually considered that!
I am trying to figure out where I should apply, so I'm just gonna lurk.

Feel free to ignore my post. (sorry for the intrusion)

for the 3rd prompt on the secondary: "Give an example of how you have made a difference in someone's life whether it is a patient, friend, classmate, or a family member and explain what
this experience taught you about yourself."

Would it be appropriate to talk about more than one person's life? I want to talk about my time volunteering at a children's hospital and incorporate more than one (generally speaking, not specific) patient and his/her family. (Or does the prompt suggest a specific person?)

Thanks x

complete around early august, interview invite around the middle of august, and I interviewed in early September.

gpa: 3.8, mcat: 33

been getting anxious. I talked to a friend from last year who said he called up the admissions office before october 15th and was informed that he had been accepted!!! i am scared to this myself, but I know EVMS is also doing this!!!

any ideas???

Just wait until after October 15th. If you're accepted now, you're accepted then.

thank you kindly for the advice my lord. 😍

but if the EVMS candidates can call about their status before October 15th, and it APPEARS that UNC candidates can as well, mayhaps and methinks it might be in my interest to call now and alleviate my anxiety which to this point has been causing me incredible diarrhea and headaches.

From reading the EVMS thread, it seems that people who interviewed were told that they could call before 10/15 to see if a decision had been made. Did UNC say something similar when you interviewed? If they didn't, maybe it's because they don't want people to? Also, one example from last year doesn't necessarily mean calling would be in your best interest. But I am not an expert. KDizzle, however, seems to have been pretty successful, so I would follow his advice! 🙂

edit: best of luck either way! I hope you get good news.

I'm not speaking from any special knowledge base; however, I wouldn't want to ask a school if they would be willing to break an AAMC rule just to find out a couple weeks early. It's not likely to change anything if you give it a shot, but why risk it? Good luck, I'm sure you will all be getting good news whether it's now or later 🙂

II today! My top choice, so excited. Is there an advantage to interviewing earlier here?

Verified mid august haven't heard anything since (no secondary), silent rejection?

They keep interviewing thru the end of February and make sure to keep spots open as they interview. So while interviewing earlier means you get a chance to get a good first impression and you MAY be admitted within a month or two, you could also end up not finding out til February or March...those of us that have interviewed are all just waiting patiently at this point.

Just received my secondary invite today. IS first time applicant. I keep hearing that secondary means interview. Is this true or just rumor?

I asked one of our tour guides on my interview day and he said that a few years back every first time applicant who got a secondary would get an interview, but in the past couple years there have simply been too many applicants to allow for that. So if they do invite you now then they are genuinely interested, it isn't simply because you got an automatic invite due to getting a secondary.

II this morning!! AAAAAAH I'm so excited! I love this school!

OOS, complete 10/05, will be there early-Nov

Congrats!!!! I enjoyed my time at Chapel Hill 🙂 hopefully SNMA will have its stuff together so you can meet up with them for dinner (they were supposed to do that for us, but all the MS1s and MS2s were super busy the week i interviewed).

Thanks!! I've heard nothing but good things about them so far. One of my friends who interviewed there mentioned the SNMA dinner. How do you find out about the dinner? Do they email you about it?

Yeah they'll email you....they actually emailed us retroactively and apologized for being too busy....it's all good though for me because i've met a bunch of their SNMA chapter before through MAPS...good people 👍

Hello what do you all think the acceptance rate is for the ones of us who got the interviews and who are also in-state UNC students or alumni??? Thanks!!

Can anyone shed some light into their reapp experience (i.e. timeline and improvements)...I feel like I have been in limbo way longer than most.

How do you know when you have been considered complete? I haven't gotten a complete email...

I never got one either...next email I got after completing my secondary was an interview invite

For those of you who have interviewed do you mind telling us about your experience? Pretty Please? Seems like the interview feedback isn't getting much love these days.

Awesome! I'll look out for an email then. 😀

I received the email that they received my primary, but haven't received a secondary yet... anyone know what the screen cut-offs are?

Troll?

I thought UNC gave decisions out pretty near the 16th for at least the first few interviews

well to be fair, the individual i called at the admissions office sounded liek the same fellow who gave me erroneous infor about the residency form so maybe he is wrong today as well..

also, he did not say when the comittmee was meeting, just that they haven't met. so mohammed (pbuh) willing, they will meet today.

forgive me transgressions

Hey! I'm in a bit of a rush, so I'll write a stream of consciousness - please excuse any grammatical/spelling errors 🙂 I interviewed in mid-September. We all arrived at 8 am, had an introductory talk by Joni (she was so sweet and made us feel so welcome), and interviews promptly began after that! I was actually surprised that we were starting so soon, so if you do have an 8 am interview, make sure you're ready because you will have both of your interviews completed before lunch. Room is stocked with cookies, water, and tea (no coffee) for snacks.

Two one-on-one, open-file interviews with faculty members. One adcom member who will speak for you during the meeting/voting process and one whom I think simply sends his note. You will be told exactly whom you're interviewing with and will be given the opportunity to look up your interviewers in a book they have in the room. However! The book isn't always complete.

Interviews are really relaxed - the interviewers are SO nice and it's hard to get a good read on how they feel, since they're naturally just such nice and kind people! First interview - 35 minutes, second interview with adcom - probably closer to 45-60 min. It's difficult to remember specific questions, but both of them asked why UNC. Most questions came from the application - what the experience was like, what I learned from it. I was asked a few curveballs, like "what is disease vs. what is health," but other than that it was pretty basic, like why I would come to UNC even though I'm currently living in a big city, and where I saw my career going and how UNC could help me. There were by far my most conversational interviews.

After our interviews were over, we had lunch (good sandwich + apple + water), then went on our tour. We saw a good portion of the facilities, but not the hospital. We had a pretty intimate look at the simulation center where we got to actually touch/work with the simulation dolls! The MBRB was beautiful. All the students were so nice and, honestly, all the interviewees were awesome too, leaving me with very positive vibes from UNC. Anyway, I hope this helps - let me know if you have any more questions!

Both of my interviews actually went over an hour. I'm assuming that's a good thing?

My interviews were scheduled back-to-back (one at 9 am and one at 9:30), but I definitely think it's a good sign!

Mine were several hours apart, so there was plenty of wiggle room for both. I feel like they both went fairly well, but my ADCOM definitely asked the tougher questions. Hoping that they liked my answers.

Just had my interview. Since I was out of state, their questions were all geared towards why North Carolina. No questions about my activities were asked. Both faculty interviewers were very heartwarming, albeit I felt I did poorly on the first.

Interviews go until February 26th. There are 10 students per interview day and I believe 3 interview days per week. The admissions committee has already convened and do so twice a month. It takes approximately 8 weeks after your interview date for the committee to make a decision.

Best of luck to all.

8 weeks would mean almost another month before the first interviewees heard anything back. Hoping they don't put us off that long!

the young man i spoke to yesterday said 4 - 6 weeks, after i told him i interviewed early september...

good to see he was wrong about the committee not meeting. eager for a call tomorrow!

Here's some info for you guys from someone connected to unc admissions (not me): the committee meets ever two weeks on Mondays (met two days ago) and grants a certain number of admissions. If you don't get accepted at one meeting, you can go back into the queue and get reviewed again at the next meetings (this is why it is to your advantage to apply early - smaller pool and more opportunities to be reviewed). The admissions ppl will typically call accepted folks on Monday nights after they meet, but since Tuesday was the first day they could accept people, they are obviously not on that schedule This week. I know for a fact that they have already decided to accept some people, but to my knowledge, they haven't called everyone yet (or possibly anyone). I'm pretty sure they call all accepted people, so maybe they are working their way thru the list, or the person who was accepted got a letter/email? Hope this helps

Phone calls have been going out. If you get accepted you'll get a phone call from your admissions committee interviewer

Can people share how long after submitting the supplemental application they received an interview invite? (especially for IS first time applicants)

Thanks!

Been awfully quiet here... any other acceptances beyond the first one?
