2013-2014 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I live in the area and wanted to get other people's feelings on this... what did you all think of Chapel Hill? I come from a really small town originally, got accepted to ATSU-KCOM and find CH really off-putting in comparison. I actively dislike all the crowding on the streets, the traffic, and the beggars are everywhere. A friend of our's got robbed there in the middle of the day. The area is giving me real pause about the school; I'm worried I'll be miserable there.

For serious? Chapel Hill is so nice and has very little crime compared to the majority of the country. Traffic? Crowding on the streets? 😕

Have you ever been to an actual city? lol I'm from a small town as well and CH is I think a happy medium between city and town and is definitely way closer to small town vibe than big city.

I agree Chapel Hill is very unique and beautiful along with it's neighboring town, Carborro 🙂

I've been to plenty of cities for travel, but to be honest I'm not to comfortable staying long term in a place with over 20k people in it. For permanent settlement I prefer closer to 10k or less.

That said, the students at the med school all seem very close.

you won't find a competitive medical school in a town with a population of 10k or less. look at where all the top medical schools are located.

Hi everyone! This is my first post on SDN so forgive me if it seems childish or dumb, but I am thrilled to say that I just received an II to UNC! Before anyone asks I am IS with a decent gpa and an MCAT score just slightly below the school's average. My question to you all is should I be worried that my interview date is so late? It is literally the second to last interview day they have available. Can anyone comment on whether I am interviewing for a spot on the wait list? Thank you in advance!🙂

I interviewed on the first day of interviews and haven't heard back yet. I think if they like you, it doesn't matter. Other people have been accepted the week following their interview.

I also heard it depends on your adcom's schedule. One student I talked to said it took 3+ months to hear back cuz the adcom member who interviewed her was busy teaching so i think the 8 week window is just an average. fingers crossed

Weeeeeeeell this is looking less and less promising...

I sadly have to agree. Looking at previous year's thread, it seems only 2 people who interviewed early posted on sdn after December. One was accepted, one was rejected. I'm also assuming everyone else who stopped posting did not get in. Doesn't look good.

They day has come, I believe, for mass rejection and I'll get-er started....

which is to say, rejected today. OSS, obviously no II

Sorry to hear that 🙁 UNC is pretty hard on OOS applicants though. Best of luck to you in your other schools

Its actually not bad for OOS according to mars stats, that's why I sent it an application.
From the way I understand it, about 4000-5000 out of state applicants apply and only around 100-130 of those get interviews. Around 1000 in state applicants apply and around 500 or so get interviews. As you can see they are very in state friendly. Your chances as an out of state applicant are low.

First they came for the out of state applicants,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't an out of state applicant.

Then they came for the traditional applicants,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a traditional applicant.

Then they came for the boring weirdos,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a boring weirdo.

Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

Hahahahaha the boring weirdos

They came for me brothers and sisters. Post-interview rejection, received via email. I made peace with this rejection long ago, so

In-state, interviewed 9/9.

To everyone rejected, sorry guys. Hopefully your other schools are going well. It's a tough process. When you have 5,000 to 10,000 applicants applying for 100 to 200 spots, it's all really based on luck.

To the rest of us still waiting, good luck! Hoping for no news today/tomorrow, which means we passed the first round of rejections

Damn, I interviewed 9/11 and havent heard back yet. I wouldn't be surprised if the rejection email showed up in my inbox one of these days...anyways, good luck to everyone! To those rejected, I am sure yall will get in somewhere 🙂

I am IS, in case anyone is wondering

In the same boat... we probably met on interview day. Haha hopefully we will both get in 🙂

Got an acceptance letter in the mail yesterday (12/23)! Never got a phone call. Don't give up hope!!

USPS delivers today y'all.... We may have a few more Christmas presents in some mailboxes yet

UNC's school semester begins on the 8th, so maybe the 13th?
I take it no one else frequenting this thread got a letter over Christmas?

Does anyone by any chance know when second look is scheduled for?? My adcom mentioned it in my acceptance call but I neglected to write it down in all of my excitement. 😛

Just got verified as in-state. WISH they would just accept me already!!!
Same. I had a brief heart attack when I got an email from them. Any recent rejections? Last year there were a bunch around this time.

+1. 15 weeks for me now. One person I spoke with during my interview said she interviewed in September but didn't get accepted until January, so I guess there's still hope for us.
