2014-2015 Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Long time lurker.

Rejected today, bummed and a little surprised to be honest, but what are you gonna do? Thought I would just post my info for anyone interested in getting a sense of who Cooper seems to be interested in. Also should note that I have received an interview request at NYMC, one other reject, and a "pre interview hold" at another.

NYC area Post-Bacc Student, 3.6 GPA
Northeast area Undergrad, 3.3 GPA
MCAT 34
Good amount of research experience.

Also… pet peeve.

This is a rude and unprofessional way to talk about someone in a forum, particularly from a medical student. I'm fine if no one else feels this way, but asking about Cooper's accreditation is a legitimate question and responding by attacking someone's "stats" is obnoxious and childish.

Thanks so much for addressing this so that I wouldn't have to...

Anyone know what the interview format is here? Thanks!

Interview is two to one. It was a conversational interview and They were really nice. In addition to the regular interview you are going to be seeing standardized patients. They give you two cases and you will have to question the patients. It seems scary but it really isn't, they only want to see how you communicate and behave around patients.

II received yesterday, scheduled my interview date today. FYI there are no more open dates before February which is really bumming me out.

Complete 08/05
28 mcat, 3.49 cGPA, 3.29 sGPA, upward trend, should've studied harder :/
Strong ECs in research, volunteer work, employment, NCAA athletics, and student leadership
Definitely feel that my professional goals resonate with the mission of CMSRU; grew up in several medically under-served areas

Awesome, thanks!

Thanks CmegPBPM for being so compassionate and professional. it is sad to see people like rushmore4 talking to others like that. i also thought it was rude. i thought i had valid concerns and i don't know why she took it so personal. this is the biggest decision in our lives, this is our future and i think we all want to be sure before we made a critical decision. i don't want anyone to worry about rushmore4 opinions. we all deserve a chance despite our stats and i trust that there are fair and compassionate people at the admissions office of all medical schools and that they look at the individual as a whole. i think we are all worry and that we all have something to offer to CMSRU. we should ALWAYS keep our professionalism and ethics and treat other individuals with love and compassion. Good luck everyone!!!

Rejected (post interview) 🙁

I just got priority wait listed. I hope there is enough movement to get me into this school. 🙂 I loved the school and the staff. Good to know I am not out of the running!

Rejected yesterday post interview. The email came five minutes before my statistics midterm. Hooray for timing.

Congrats! Did your waitlist email specifically say that you were priority? Trying to figure out if there are two waitlists.

Thanks!

Accepted yesterday, IS. Got an email and phone call!

Did receive some info at interview day that people might find useful, they accept less students than most schools because they don't want to over-enroll and don't have the history to know how many students they can accept. Priority waitlist, therefore, is a really great place to be! In addition, they don't interview a lot of students, so if you get a II, you're in a really great place too.

So i kinda wanna pick you guys' brains. OOS aaplicant here. No ties to NJ. Non trad applicant - excellent work history - committment to community medicine - weak undergrad (3.0) - strong grad (4.0) and strong post bacc (4.0). Weak MCAT (Mid 20's). I have spent a considerable amount of money so far on apps and secondaries. Given my stats and my OOS status, is it even worth completing the secondary here? My personal goals are aligned with their mission statement but what are my odds?

If they sent you a secondary, you should. They're screened, which means your numbers are within an acceptable range. You sound a lot like me, and I'm doing well in the program. 🙂

Did anyone else recently get an II and is concerned about how there are no open interview dates until February?! I've only gotten an II from one other school, and I got to interview 1 month after the invite, so I guess I'm not sure about what is normal for Cooper.

I thought that was odd, too, so I called and ask about it a few days ago. They said we should select the Feb date and reserve our spot, and also email the admissions director to request that we be added to the waitlist for an earlier interview (since there may be cancellations). Hope this helps!

Hey! Does anyone have an idea as to how receptive the admissions committee is to letters of interest/intent/additional letters of rec once you are put on the waitlist?

To those have already interviewed-about when was your interview day through if you stay for all events? Thanks in advance!

Good luck to everyone currently applying! I'm bored and procrastinating studying so if anyone has any questions for me i'll try and answer if I see them! I'm currently an M1 and loving every moment of this year 🙂

Rejected by email this AM. OOS, no ties to NJ, no interview.

"Thank you for your interest in our program. As you know, the medical school applications process is highly competitive, and each medical school receives an extremely large number of applications. You will not be granted an interview with our Admissions Committee."

That's a little... terse. I sincerely hope their rejection letter to post-interview candidates is a little nicer to read.

Good luck to those folks still in the running!

I interviewed in Feb (2 years ago), was waitlisted, bumped up to priority, and accepted in May. It was stressful but I very much love where I am. There's no guarantees about getting in but I think that if you really want to be in medical school you owe it to yourself to take every opportunity you get.

Thanks for the advice! No way was I going to decline this interview. This school is one of my top choices so I suppose I am pretty grateful for the chance to interview at all.

so they say that ur file goes to admissions committee wednesday after you interview and decisions are sent next day. If that is the case then why is it taking some people months to hear back? Can someone shed some light on this?

Hey so in most cases, at least from my classes perspective, people hear back within a week. There are some circumstances however where that doesn't work out as initially planned for a couple reasons. Sometimes the sheer quantity of interviewees the admissions board has to go over results in a session causes them to have to wait until the next meeting to finish due to time constraints. Also you have to understand that a lot of the interviewers are actually doctors from Cooper and as such are often on call and get pulled away before being able to provide their input on the applying student. I know the waiting sucks (trust me haha) but its better they wait and make sure to thoroughly discuss each applicant than try to rush it. Also one other reason why some students had to wait a little while (especially at the beginning of the cycle) is because there is actually a specific date that is the earliest possible day at which students can be alerted if they got in or not so some students interviewed well before that day and thus had to wait until that day came around to find out if they got in or not. I haven't heard of anyone at least in my class having to wait months but here are some of the reasons it may take longer than a week. Hope this helps =)

First II and feeling ecstatic!!!!!!! Was just starting to finalize alternative paths for post-graduation too....! Signed up for 12/5 (the next available date was in March!) LizzyM 65-67

Congrats!

When were u complete? I wonder if they've started re-reviewing early applicants yet....

Bump.

Any other invites?

I got an II about two weeks ago now, but the only date available was Feb 22nd. So, I called recently and requested to be informed if any other dates open up. They were very receptive. I was complete early October. OOS, LizzyM~69

Edit: Feb 20th***

Does anyone have any info regarding the number of people put on the priority wait list and how likely it is to be accepted from there?

Emailed admissions when I saw the post you quoted and asked to be made aware of any new dates than came available. They told me that they would let me know. I received my ii in late October and only February dates available 🙁

around when is second look? and what do you do during it?

If I recall correctly, I think that it was around early to late april- During it we basically were given a slightly more thorough tour without the overwhelming stress of the interview looming our head. We also took a reallllly quick tour around the hospital had some students come in (I think) for a q&a. I dont remember too much from it unfortunately but I hope this at least somewhat answers your question =)

Where's the action, peoples?

I'm guessing no interview invites have been given out lately.

Considering those who scheduled in October had only February interview dates available, I wonder how much of a chance those who have not been rejected have to receive an invite...

Already rejected but saw this article recently and thought this would be a good place to share.... I know that scathing Rolling Stone's article may have scared some people away but hopefully this makes people feel a little better about Camden (although it seems that convo has sailed away so I guess I'm changing the wind direction 🙂 ) : http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2014/12/police-and-people

Thanks for posting! Obviously just one article, but still encouraging.
