2014-2015 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can any current/past students shed some light on how they managed to pay Georgetown's crazy tuition? Do they give out quite a few scholarships?? Thanks!

Anyone know what they have as far as research opportunities for med school students? The website isn't really insightful.

This is my first time using SDN! Very helpful so far. I'm having trouble deciding what to do with the third essay question ("any further information?"). No fluctuations in grades, no crazy circumstances to mention. Should I put something there, even if it isn't entirely meaningful? Anyone else having similar thoughts? Thank you!!

Welcome! For a rule of thumb (what I've gathered on here) they do not want you to put something in one of those optional essays unless it is very meaningful and would alter how they view you overall. So I typically leave these blank because I would rather it not seem that I'm just trying to fill space. But ultimately it's up to you and your judgement! Hope that helps.

I read somewhere that every medical student is required to complete a research project on a topic of their choosing before graduation. That's about as much as I got, though.

Yes. Alot of schools that offer this allow students to do a dual degree or other options to count for this. They just want you to have a scholarly concentration from what I understand.

My application file says complete but then it says that my university transcripts have not been received yet! Anyone else who has the same problem?

+1

I got a complete email from them a few days after I submitted saying my application had been forwarded to the admissions committee

Just checked my status...

Changed from "Your application is being reviewed"

To

"Your Application is being reviewing" "Interview information- Date not scheduled yet"

Hmmmm, I wonder!?

That sounds promising!! I got a complete email 6 days ago, but my status on the secondary website still says "submitted" and it says my transcript hasn't been received. Hmmm.

Did you get an e-mail about your status change?

ecu... haha i am sorry if I freaked anyone out. No idea how I got on this thread instead.

Georgetown emailed me saying they are holding my application until my second mcat scores come back so thats that.

No worries, it happens, I did the same thing somewhere else lolz.

My status still says submitted, but underneath there is a complete date. Recently, it now indicates that my transcript from my school is not received...do I need to send in my transcript?

You have to send them an official transcript if you're accepted, I think thats what the transcript received status is for.

Applying here OOS! 1000 characters for a diversity essay is much too small. And they want you to relate it back to their mission? There's barely enough room for 5 sentences.

Anyone else sees this on their application?
  • Transcripts:
    • University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Not Received
  • Other Supporting Documents:
    • Other supporting documents have not been received
I sent my transcripts through AMCAS though...

Every time I try to log in I have to change my password. I give up. If I'm getting an II, they'll email me, right?

Is that right under your application submitted on [Date/time] status on the first page? Maybe I'm just blind but I don't see anywhere to check my transcript receipt status.

Does anyone know the policy on sending in updates on activities?

congrats to those getting IIs!! When were you guys complete?

Congratulations guys!!! I was complete 7/15, so I think this means that I'm out of the running. Georgetown says somewhere specifically that they only review applications once. I'm a little bummed since this looks like an awesome school with great programs and opportunities, but so it goes! Enjoy your interviews and good luck to everyone! 🙂

um, if you think everyone complete 7/15 or earlier who doesn't have an II already is rejected, then you are sorely mistaken.

Whoa, I didn't mean to offend you! I was just going off of something I read on their website and on last year's thread. It'd be awesome if I still got a Georgetown II, so I'm very much hoping that I'm wrong! Perhaps I misinterpreted one of their statements about admissions procedure.

Edit: This is the statement I saw. It's in their 2015 Guide to Application --
"Only completed applications are forwarded to the Committee on Admissions for review and interview consideration. Applications will be reviewed ONLY once."

Thus I assumed that they reviewed applications in the order that they are received, and if you are passed over, then you are rejected. Since someone got an II with a complete date later than mine, I thought that meant that my application had been reviewed but not selected, so I was no longer being considered for an interview. Perhaps that is the incorrect way to interpret that -- do you have additional insight into the matter?

I was complete on 7/17 too but I didn't hear back today. Hopefully next week maybe...

"application will be reviewed only once" does not mean "decisions will be given immediately after being reviewed". Much more likely is that they review your application and somehow give it a rating and if you are borderline, they may hold off on giving an interview until they rate more applicants and see where they are at.

They could also just mean that only one decisions will be given on an application per cycle (i.e. if they reject you, you can't re-submit a new application).

That makes sense, and I hope that that is the case because I'd love a shot here. Sorry for the confusion -- it was an honest misinterpretation.

II earlier today! Complete on 7/21. Anyone else interviewing on 9/3? Does anyone know of any student host programs, formal or informal?

Yo Sunflowa, I was also complete on 7/15, and I didn't get an II either. Keep your head up!

@sunflower18 I'm not sure what your goal is but it should not be to get an II everywhere given the statistics. Be content with your two so far! That's awesome (congrats!) and a lot more than most of us can say 😉...

Agreed. There's a reason premed advisors and adcoms always tell us to apply broadly and to many schools: Because you're not gonna get II's from every school you apply to, but increasing the number AND applying strategically increase your chances.

I'm not sure why you don't think I'm content with what I have. I absolutely am! But that doesn't stop me from being interested in many schools and hoping to get good news from them. I put a lot of time and money into my apps because I'm genuinely excited about 30 schools -- yes, I'm so beyond stoked to have gotten invites from two schools, but that doesn't mean my genuine interest in the other 28 schools has vanished. I have absolutely no fantasy of getting IIs everywhere, and I'll be happy with what I get. But again, just because I've gotten lucky with a few invites doesn't mean I need to stop posting on other threads and hoping for continued success.

In case anyone else is wondering, I spoke to the Admissions department about this. The M1's and M2's are 2 and 3 weeks away from orientation, respectively, so the host program may not become available until right before our interview dates. They're trying to coordinate it now.

Fair enough. But I'm not the only one who felt this way. It's really early and being super concerned/worried about when people were completed and whatnot is a little dramatic- given your luck. Your hard work obviously shows! But, you have to understand others' perspective as well.

I apologize if my posts came across as "super worried" -- that was not my intention at all. I misinterpreted the admissions guidebook at Georgetown, that's all. I never felt overly concerned, I'm just trying to make sense of this scattered process and figure out where I stand. I'm sorry if it came across as neurotic, because that was never my intended tone.

Are the II's emailed to you, or do you have to keep getting on the annoying portal to check up on it??

Mine was e-mailed, and included a link to schedule your date.
For anyone who gets IIs, I highly recommend scheduling your date ASAP after getting the email. I waited until the next morning, and 4 of 7 possible dates were already filled.
Do you know, by chance, how many interviewees per slot?

No idea, and as far as I can tell, no way to find out unless you call and ask. It just gave me several date options, and when I looked again the next day, some were still open for registration and some were not.
Yeah I'm very thankful my email was open when I woke up from my nap! I would not have seen the II until at least a few hours after! I just checked, and most of them are full except the last two haha

3.5 cGPA / 3.37 bcpmGPA and 31 MCAT...should I even bother submitting the secondary here? 🤔

Hi Everyone, new here and I had a question about setting up an interview.

I got an II four days ago, to be set up from 9/2 - 9/11. Unfortunately I was still trying to sort out transportation, housing, and when I'd be able to take a day off of work, and when I looked to register today the only date left was Thursday, 9/11. That's the same date as my flight to Michigan, where I have an interview the next day. The email says that I have to register within this interview period, and I'm wondering how and if I can reschedule, or if I'm sort of screwed here.

Your only option is to call them and explain the situation. I'm sure they can work with you.
