2014-2015 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd prefer to remain a little more anonymous, but my stats are slightly lower than to the Georgetown average. My ECs are pretty extensive, diverse, and mostly service/social justice-oriented, and I went to a Jesuit undergrad.

Agreed on remaining more anon. What I've been sharing is that I have a GPA >3.7 and an MCAT >33. I haven't shared any of my ECs etc because I would be easily identifiable. I can tell you that I checked all the stereotypical boxes and I have some things on my resume that few to no other applicants will have (which I think is the reason I've gotten some interviews so far--the numbers alone are just a total crapshoot...you can't tell much from GPA and MCAT).

Complete 7/18 and nothing.

I'm just going to assume Georgetown doesn't want me. Oh well.

Quick Question here: So it says application complete as of 7/31 (when my final letter of rec went in) but it says my transcripts are not received, even though AMCAS has them marked as received. Any thoughts on this?

Same here - is this to be completed after acceptance?

Congrats to everyone with IIs! Hope to see some of you soon!

EDIT: I can't read :ninja:

All these IIs were making me anxious until I realized I was complete anywhere from 2-4 weeks after you guys ><

Lol, opposite feeling here. From thread to thread I was complete the same day as most of the people getting II. The only difference is that people with early II have high ass stats.

It makes me question the whole "we review holistically...." spiel. However, I'm glad I've already got some love! ^_^

Does Georgetown do student hosting for interviews?
I emailed them on 7/25 about that for my 9/3 interview. This was the reply:

"Thank you for your email, and congratulations on your interview invitation. We are currently coordinating with our M1 and M2 classes to determine student host availability. As orientation is still two and three weeks away, respectively, we may not have information posted to the online pdf (in your invitation) until just prior to your interview date. In this circumstance, we recommend making hotel accommodations that may be canceled without penalty should a student hosting opportunity become available prior to your interview date."

It sounds like it'll be an issue for us in that first week, but should be available for all the intervies after.

Planning on submitting tonight, but am unsure how to format the .pdf or .doc document that answers the question: "Why have you chosen to apply to the Georgetown University School of Medicine, and how do you think your education at Georgetown will prepare you to become a physician for the future? * Please note: Essays should not exceed one single-spaced page at 12 point font (c. 5,000 characters)"

I was thinking of using font 12 times new roman, 1" margins, and a header that has my name and AMCAS number. Currently I have 3,800 characters with spaces filling 1 page.

I'm on the 10th, so we'll see if an extra week makes any difference...

I don't think you have to worry about formatting since you have to write it into the application anyways. (I copy/pasted it). Good luck 🙂

Actually I think they asked you to upload a document- there isn't a box to copy/paste. But yes, I just uploaded a .pdf with the same formatting, except I just put the essay prompt as the header. I figured they knew my name and AMCAS number since I'm uploading it to my application.

Any II's out there with application complete past the 21st?

Are they going in order? I was complete 7/21 but no status change :/

Does anyone know if interviews get posted on the online portal or is it just the scheduling and conformation through email?

Is the first essay of the secondary basically a diversity question?

I think that's how I interpreted it...

I got an email from Gtown saying they're still waiting on a letter of rec. It's getting really uncomfortable, I keep asking my PI about it and he keeps saying he'll get it in lol

Then how'd you go about answering the third question, if at all... Thanks for the help!

I am curious who got higher # on VR in MCAT, you or the gentleman on the phone 🙂

I have a question regarding their stance on the whole safer sex, contraception, etc, and would really appreciate if anyone could enlighten me about these points.
I applied to Georgetown through AMCAS knowing that Georgetown is a religious school...but after further research online, it seems as though their institutional stance is against safer sex education, contraception distribution, etc.
Well, some of my EC activities (both during undergrad and also during my gap year) involve(d) community sex education, condom distribution, etc... Would having these activities disadvantage me a lot? Not sure if it's worth my time to apply to a place that contradicts my EC activities/ beliefs and so forth...I have a sinking feeling that I wasted $36...

I doubt it will disadvantage you. Georgetown dispenses birth control at their hospital despite being a religious institution, so I don't see why they would look down on you for trying to improve the reproductive health of the community. As far as Catholic orders go, the Jesuits are VERY progressive.

I worked at a sexual health resource/HIV rapid testing center and I got an interview 🙂 shouldn't be a problem

They do? I thought they didnt

I actually think you're right - they don't. I got confused because they recently decided to provide birth control coverage for Georgetown University students under the university's health plan. It seems strange to me that they would provide it to students but not to the community though...

I see. Thanks!

That's awesome! Well, I'd better start with secondaries then!

Is it generally true that being admitted into a dual degree program (MD/MPH or MD/MBA, not MD/PHD) is more competitive than the regular MD program? I'm interested in MD/MPH but I don't want to choose that if it means they will judge my application with extra scrutiny. Especially since I can add the MPH after the second year. This is the only application I have filled out that makes it sound like im applying solely for the dual degree program and won't be considered for the regular MD program.
As far as I know, it looks like you have to apply for the MD program and the MPH program separately. Do you have any details for applying to both? I haven't been able to find anything online.

"Applicants must submit TWO separate applications – one to the M.D. program and one to the M.P.H. program. Individuals already enrolled in the M.D. program may apply for the M.D./M.P.H. program after the second year of medical school, or beyond."

Info can be found on the prospective student page under degrees and then dual degrees. I plan on doing MD/MPH, but I'm not in the mood to create a SOPHAS application and add an entirely new application to this already daunting process. I will just select the MD program on the secondary and if I get accepted I will worry about the rest after second year. On the bright side, the MPH is done at Hopkins which accepts the MCAT. Some schools only accept the GRE which is a pain.

Is anyone else's status jsut at "application submitted"? Mine's been like that since i was complete on 7/15.....

II today! Complete 7/29 🙂 Really excited for this one !! ~Lizzy M 77

Edit: By the way my portal doesn't show any changes for those of you rechecking it like I have done🙂
