2014-2015 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I called the admissions office about when we might hear back from the admissions committee (I know, silly question). They said that they couldn't give updates (of course), but that they have been telling people to be "pragmatic" and start planning for attending other schools/reapplying. Somewhat discouraging. I'm withdrawing since I just signed a lease for an apartment near the school I'm accepted at.

Thanks for sharing. It would be nice to know approximately how many spots that they have left to fill

The 2015 Gtown thread seems to be dead, so I'll ask here. Did anyone with above average stats (LizzyM of 74 here) feel that their clear articulation of a good reason to apply allowed them to land an II? Debating whether it's worth the money to apply if there's a good possibility I'd be screened out, but I think I have a rather good argument for being in DC (work-related, not family-related).

Current applicants, any thoughts?

Good stats and good interest in Gtown usually bodes well for applicants

Ok so having a good work-related interest to be in DC is good enough? I've seen a lot of talk of using family ties as leverage to show interest. That's not necessary here to be considered, right?

If this work-related interest can be made a Georgetown-related/medicine-related interest, then I think it is of some relevance. Making a strong case for this particular interest is up to your writing skills and how well you showcase during an interview. Beyond that, it's tough to assess if your interest could be a significant asset to your application without knowing more.

Any ties to a private academic institution, whether familial or professional, help your application shine. Private schools are inclusive by nature and are sustained by long-standing or deepened connections/ties.

BUT familial ties are not necessary...just to answer your question

Did anyone receive the email yesterday about the classing being seated?

Hello everyone! I'm an applicant for the 2015-2016 cycle and wanted to get your feedback on your interview experience at Georgetown. My interview is a week from today and I want to do everything I can to prepare and do well. Thank you!!

You should know going in that you'll only interview with one person, and that person may be a student. It can be a bit disappointing.
I remember on my interview day we had lunch with students. Be sure to talk to them, ask them how they chose Georgetown, what the like/don't like, etc. I found the best way to judge whether I fit at a school was by talking to the students (and the other interviewees!).

Definitely be prepared to talk about cura personalis and how it fits in with your goals/past experiences.

If you're waitlisted, they recommend/expect you to write a letter a month explaining why you're a good fit for the school.

I interviewed with a 4th year student and they try to make the interview as conversational as possible. There's no need to stress about that in particular and I think most/everyone I spoke with said they had a positive interview experience. An interesting fact they shared with us during our time there: Of the 1100-1300+ people they interviewed the previous season 2013-2014, only 30 - 60 people did not get into any medical school at all (I forgot the exact numbers). So you'll probably get in to some medical school somewhere since you are apparently a very competitive applicant. That's something to feel good about!

Sorry to bump an old thread. Does Georgetown see a lot of waitlist movement throughout the cycle?
I used to have the US News stats for GU. Supposedly, they interview a lot, waitlist almost everyone, and accept the majority of their class through the waitlist with a low amount of people turning them down/changing their mind. This means that although most people that matriculate are from the waitlist, less than half of the people who are waitlisted/interviewed are accepted. I think the number was 1/4 to 1/3 of people who were interviewed are accepted. This is in contrast to about 1/2 of interviewees at other similar schools being accepted. For what it is worth (very little), I was waitlisted at GU, thought I had a good interview in October, and I wrote them a letter of interest every month (which they suggested). Unfortunately, I was never accepted. Good luck to you.
