2014-2015 Louisiana State University - Shreveport Application Thread

That's weird, kids with 25 MCATs and decent GPAs are getting interviews left and right....my MCAT was only a 28 and I got in over 2 months ago...

No felonies right? Are you sure your LOR are solid?
My sGPA isn't great, so that might be it. But I did a postbac and got a 3.6 there, with a 3.3 in UG. I had a 26 MCAT before but raised it to a 30, which I got back the scores for on 9/30. Maybe because that MCAT score came in late? I don't know. But I'm super concerned.

Oh I know. How long have you been in limbo?

I'm sorry to hear that. Mind if I ask how they phrased it when they let you know?

Contacted the office and found out why is was rejected. Sadly I just haven't been in Louisiana long enough. I was told to stick around for a few more years, take a few classes, get new letters of rec from Louisiana schools and doctors, take the new mcat, and reapply. I was basically told to start all over. Screw that.

How long do they want you to have been here? I think a year of working and paying state taxes while not being in school is the standard minimum for state residency...

The exact quote was a few years. What it seems like they wanted really was more in state lors and more in state hospital experience. They are worried that I will just return to Florida after they educate me and that they don't want. I don't think they care about minimums.

Anyone know when the committee meets and discusses those on the A-List? I see the NO thread is popping with talk of all this and was wondering if anyone had anything to add to this one on that front?

Has anyone that has interviewed on January 6 heard anything back?

Ah, okay! I've heard from previous students that Dr. Kennedy makes calls the Thursday of the meeting to discuss the applicants, and was wondering if the same still applied.

Hmm, I wonder if that automatically means we were either NFA'd or rejected?

Yes, I spoke to one girl who got the call. I was hoping maybe they just didn't call everyone?

I honestly don't think you'll hear anything until April because I read online that that's when people who hold more than one seat at different medical schools are forced to commit to just one and then if I'm not mistaken the seats that are given up become available for the A-list to join.

Got placed on the "A-list." Does anyone know the chances of being accepted off of this list? Should I send Dr. Kennedy an e-mail regarding any updates now or is it too soon?

The chances, while not 100%, are still quite good. During my interview day Dr. Kennedy told us last year they got the list down to 6 names. But be warned, it tends to move late and fast so be prepared to wait and be patient.

Best of luck to all the A-listers!!

Got a pre-interview nonspecific rejection letter basically saying "try again." Huge bummer. I plan to head up there sometime and find out why I was rejected, as Shreveport was my first choice and I want to go there (despite having to take the new MCAT). I'm really curious as to why. My numbers aren't great, and I have a hunch that my sGPA derailed my application. I don't know if one of my LORs helped too much, either, but that's just an unsubstantiated gut feeling and I had several other great LORs.

A little about me: First-time applicant, 26 MCAT (8PS;8VR;10BS), sGPA 3.13, cGPA 3.38. Tons of work hours in the clinical environment, including both volunteer and job experience in different medical settings. Nothing really in terms of leadership experience or research, but I do have multiple ECs that I am active in.

In regards to my sGPA, would I have a shot at acceptance if I re-applied with solid postbac grades one year from now? Or is this the type of damage that requires multiple years to fix?

Has anyone ever been asked about " their biggest mistake " during an interview??

I bet you could improve it with a postbac. If nothing else, they at least look at postbac/grad GPAs as a separate thing. If you got a postbac MS or did an SMP and got a really high GPA there, I bet it'd help. And most of those are 1 year programs.

Your grades are way too low for almost every allopathic medical school in the US. You'll definitely need to raise both your GPA and MCAT...or cure some kind of cancer

You should look into applying DO, your chances will be significantly higher

Yeah.. I've heard this a couple times and I guess Ill just have to soak it in. I was hoping against hope but I guess that old chestnut just doesn't work that way.

The wait continues!

I just found a pre-interview rejection letter in my mailbox as well. Second time applying and interviewed last year.

Weirdly enough, I was rejected a week ago but as of today, my rejection was retracted. Will be interviewing soon.

Woah, that must have put you on quite the emotional rollarcoaster! That's awesome. Congratulations! Did they give you any reason for retracting the rejection at all?

Emotional roller coaster is quite accurate haha. Thank you. I should probably explain a little better.. I interviewed there last year but didn't get in. I went for a follow up to figure out why I was rejected and what was needed to have better luck next time. I was given an "assignment" of sorts and re-applied after completing that assignment. I wasn't promised anything for doing the assignment but I definitely expected another interview. The change was made after my medical school advisor made an inquiry.

Silence from this school....does anyone know if they're giving out any more II?

Interviewed yesterday. If anyone else has an interview coming up or gets one, I have a collection of questions that are asked there regularly by interviewers.

Any idea when the committee may be meeting again to discuss movement of the acceptable list?

I know they're meeting a week from Thursday. Not sure if they're discussing the A-list yet though.

Oh okay. Is that for the general meeting following initial interviews?
