2014-2015 Mayo Medical School Application Thread

Hey guys,

One thing I was curious about is whether or not the interview is at all the behavioral based type. (Note: a behavioral based interview asks questions like: "tell me about a time when you disagreed with your superior" or "tell me when you worked on a team" ?)

Thanks!

Interviewed here this week and there were a lot of questions like that. I would say about half of my time in each interview was spent this way. The other half was just questions more about me and my activities and what I want to do with my career.

But guys....Oh my gosh is Mayo amazing! I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to visit and interview. Everyone is beyond nice and so welcoming. The school and the clinic are so incredible that I literally was on cloud nine for my entire drive home and still hanging out up there today. Ahh! Good luck to everyone with upcoming interviews and those still waiting to hear back 🙂

Bah rejected post LOR. Complete 7/17. This one kind of stung. Good luck to everyone else still in the running!

Are these rejections coming out today? As in Sunday? Does Mayo never rest?

Rejected Post-LOR as well. Complete 7/10

Oh well. Biggest reach on my list. Better Mayo than other semi-more-realistic schools =D

Good luck to the rest of y'all!

anybody else complete on or before 7/10 alive out there with me.... I feel like I'm in such a mysterious limbo right now... hoping the Mayo reaper doesn't come to my bed in the middle of the night

It probably a good sign. Good luck my friend.

Sorry to hear about the recent rejections... 🙁

I guess I have this question nagging in my mind: what is the Mayo "fit"?? With such a small class size there must be something they pay a lot of attention to. Is it broad, nontraditional experiences, or perhaps a service-oriented attitude?

As someone interviewing in less than a week, I'm curious too!! I want to know what they saw and liked in my app so I can make sure to elaborate on it!

How long is it taking to hear back about letters? Mine were already uploaded to AMCAS, but I'm not hearing anything but crickets.

Have you seen your own ECs? 😉 I'd interview you too!

D'awww 🙂 you're too kind!! I guess if they have specific questions or interests, they will ask. Most of my interviews have been closed file thus far, so I keep forgetting that open file interviews exist!

I aww'ed at that too! 😍

@sunflower18 You've got awesome EC's, and they have a service-oriented feel to them, which in part inspired my question. But more than that I think your ECs are presented in a very logical flow because they illustrate three relatively unique things about you that others may not possess: 1) your love of the humanities, 2) your love of teaching and 3) your love of children. If your application touched quite a bit on some of the "intriguing" unconventional aspects of your background, I can see why Mayo loved you! I think they place a lot of emphasis on unconventional / interesting / diverse but that's still too vague for me to swallow LOL (because realistically, what school doesn't love applicants like that?)

Any current students want to elaborate to us bystanders what constitutes the mystery of the ideal Mayo student? I'm sure a lot of us could benefit, or at least predict if we don't fit that equation and prepare for the blow 😉

I'm expecting mine any day now because my gut tells me I don't have what they are looking for (but I don't quite know what that is yet)... Isn't that odd??

The mysterious 2:32AM II! Complete 7/30, LizzyM 70-74 for your reference 🙂

Congrats! When you say complete, do you mean that was the date you received the lor request or the date that they received all your lors? Sorry for the neuroticism!

Congrats to all the recent IIs! Are there other folks waiting from earlier in July to hear? I'm wondering if I should send an update letter at this point.

EDIT: Yes, I am a penguin sell out!

LORs requested July 19, file complete July 30, and I am still waiting. I hate being in limbo! I did submit an update letter on Monday and they accepted it. Good luck, I would try it!

I got the LOR request super early in July, but my letters were uploaded to AMCAS a few weeks later so I wasn't complete (ie LOR's received, got the email from Mayo saying I'm in final review) until July 30! Hope this clarifies!

It does! Thanks so much!

I spoke with admissions and they said they prefer a short, concise update (the admissions coordinator corrected me when I said letter haha. Clearly they are tired of reading drawn out essays/letters) in the text of an email, no attachments. And remember to include your AMCAS ID! Just FYI, hope that helps. Best of luck!

I messed up then, wrote a 1 page letter PDF on attachment. They acknowledged it but I hope it doesn't hurt me!

I highly doubt you are the only person to do that! As long as they added it to your file that's all that matters IMO. I wouldn't be sweating it.😎

Thanks DU3! Hahaha I made another gaffe in this update letter process. I wrote "Hahvard" an update letter and then someone got back to me saying it's been filed. By mistake I addressed him as Ms. NAME, and then after a mini freak-out I sent the general admissions e-mail an apology asking for an excuse for my error (I was hoping to send this fella a personal e-mail instead of announcing it to the entire admissions office what an idiot I was). LOL classy move, but I refused to have another nervous breakdown. Sometimes we have to just laugh at ourselves and move on 😎

Hahvard is not far off from how it is usually pronounced by the Bostanians. HAHVAHD! I wrote "harvard" on a different school's secondary. Had to call the school to retract the entire application (of course I didn't tell them why) and rewrote everything.

I like to think that these schools know how nervous and anxious we all are during this time lol. Hopefully our mistakes like that give them a little laugh and make us a little more memorable than just an AMCAS ID and application😆. I mean how boring is perfection anyways!? haha

Complete 7/10 still silence....

LOR request @ 2:32AM this morning. Fee-received e-mail on 9/11.

Complete 7/9 too and still nothing....does anyone know from previous years how it turned out for other students that were put on this kind of hold?

Has anyone complete in August received an II? Or are all of the II still from early-mid July?

i don't think anyone complete in august has had any news yet

2:31 am rejection, complete 7/30 (post LOR request). Good luck to everyone still in it!
