Briefly discuss any extenuating circumstances which you feel are pertinent to your application (poor grades, course withdrawals, etc).

Essay #1 (Required): The University of Toledo College of Medicine is committed to excellence in education which prepares graduates to deliver quality health care. Developing cultural competence is an important goal in our curriculum. Cultural competence is defined as an awareness, understanding and ability to use specific methods to deal effectively with cultural issues and its role in health and health care. Please discuss a life experience in which you feel you demonstrated cultural competence.

According to the 2013-2014 thread, the word count is 2000 characters, though it is not specifically stated on the application.

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

is there a secondary for toledo or do they directly send out interview invites after reviewing your AMCAS?

They prescreen and then send you the secondary. Is anyone else encountering this glitch on their secondary? i registered for an ID and only lets me select that i'm applying for fall 2014. shouldn't it be fall 2015?

They pre-screen, but my "AMCAS received" and Secondary emails came in only about an hour apart this afternoon. Good luck, everyone!

I have the exact same glitch...not sure what to do.

Have this as well! The email states that "when it opens" as if they know the 2015 is not out. But at least it is nice we passed initial screening!

Secondary received! Good luck all! I'll be submitting this as soon as I return from the Bahamas 🙂 maybe give the glitch a few hours?

Yea it is good we passed the initial screening I wonder what that screening entailed. I emailed toledo's admissions department about the glitch and we'll see what happens.

Two questions:
1. Are you guys waiting for it to say Fall of 2015 before continuing?
2. What were the pre-screening requirements to receive the secondary application?

Thanks!

Two things!

First, I, as well, received an invitation to complete Toledo's secondary for the 2015 cycle. There was a follow-up email stating that the application would open NEXT week.

Second, has anyone been picked for their selective secondary AND been interviewed?
I am curious if their secondary is TRULY selective...

If you haven't received it already, a new email just came in that acknowledges the glitch and says that the real secondary won't be up until next week.

any idea whether the questions (discuss any extenuating circumstances and cultural competence example) will be the same?

The limit for the diversity essay is 2000 characters. My original essay had about 2100 , and I had to cut it down to under 2000 before I could proceed to the next page.

Would explaining multiple MCAT scores (I've taken it 4 times, but 2 of my scores are expired…they can still see the scores) be an appropriate extenuating circumstance to explain??

I wouldn't mention it unless your later scores were significantly better.

Will they send an email stating that our application is complete? I know they don't have a status check page so I'm curious how I'll know if they're received everything?

I got one saying I was complete for review.

I got an email saying my file was complete, but the application page has a spot for a high school transcript??!? Nowhere did they indicate that a high school transcript was required. They said my file was complete, though.

hello all who are applying,
I was accepted to UT via their early admittance program. So if you have any questions about the school, environment, or whatever just PM me 🙂

What was the time frame like for you between sending in your secondary and receiving an II? I wish they had a website where you could see your status updates 😛

I did not have to apply through AMCAS. Their early admittance program is called MEDstart. I applied without an MCAT score (still took it anyway) this past winter during my junior year. 😉

What do you guys think about writing about multiple experiences for the secondary? Or maybe focusing on one, but making a slight mention of the other using a couple sentences at the end?

I wrote about 2 different experiences. One action I personally did and one that I witnessed a doctor doing when I shadowed him then I tied them together at the end and drew parallels between what I had done at what the physician had done. Good luck!

Like it. Thanks for the advice!

is it really bad if I am submitting beyond 2 weeks or receiving it?

I do not think it is as long as you are submitting a well written essay. They understand that we currently have many secondaries to write.

I am applying here OOS with 30 MCAT and 3.98 GPA. What do you think my chances are?

stats aren't everything my friend. depends on your EC as well

I agree, I have an internship at a hospital, EMT, 3 shadowing experience, volunteer w/ hospice and alzheimer's patients and speak 3 languages..

The essay doesn't have to be about health care; they just want to see how you handle such a situation where there is a cultural difference. I know that I didn't write about a healthcare- related experience, or tie it back into healthcare.

I had to dig through past threads to answer my questions about what the prompt meant by "cultural competence", so I just wanted to post here for reference in case anyone else is confused. (Although you should also take other people's advice with a grain of salt.)

For some reason I'm stuck on this essay. When talking about cultural competence, do they want us to talk about cultural competence in our medical-related ECs? Or just any instance of cultural competence? I find the wording of the question weird. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: New response popped up above me while I was typing this.

Hey rozmania, I posted right before you answering your question. From past UToledo threads on SDN, people have said that cultural competency does not have to necessarily relate back to healthcare. If you have a healthcare experience where you demonstrated cultural competency that's good too, but it doesn't seem like that's the exact purpose of the question.

Of course, there's always the chance that all of those people were wrong and the adcoms rejected them for not answering the question............but I went ahead and wrote about my experiences with cultural competency outside of healthcare activities anyways!

Finished my secondary a few weeks ago. Fingers crossed!

It's pretty quiet here... Anybody think the Toledo water situation is slowing the school down?

I saw that today! Pretty scary stuff. I wonder how long it takes to clean something like that up...

Just have a quick question. I actually wrote about something in my personal statement which relates quite well to the essay question in the secondary....would it be taboo for me to repeat the same story? Of course I wouldn't copy and paste it, I would rewrite and go more in depth, but I'm wondering whether this would be held against me.

I was in a similar situation and decided to use the space to elaborate on a different topic rather than expand on information I have already given them. I figured the more to make me stand out more or add dimensions to my application the better. That's just my philosophy.
