2014-2015 The University of Toledo Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got a II today, so if anyone's hoping for one they're starting to send them.

congrats! IS/OOS? stats if you don't mind?

IS, within driving distance. I'd like to be vague, but my stats are significantly above Toledo's averages. I honestly expected to be high-end screened at Toledo, but I'm not complaining.

The email implied most/all IIs will be sent out within the next week or so. I plan on interviewing as early as they'll let me.

Sorry for the vagueness. Good luck!

Can you share the part of the email that implied that all II's will be sent out within the next week or so?

I got an II early this week. They start interviewing late September. As far as the II e-mail goes, I didn't get the sense they were sending all of their II now so I'm sure its not too late to apply.

I also received an interview a few days ago, and there is nothing to suggest that a significant amount of II have been given out or are being given out in the near future. Every interview date except the first is still up for grabs as of now. 🙂

Good luck everyone!

Ok, so upon rereading it I may have misinterpreted. The emails says:
"Due to the large number of applicants desiring interviews, we request that you contact [an admissions person] by Monday, August 25th, to avoid possibly being withdrawn of this interview offer."

But perhaps that's just for this round of invites.

II this AM! 🙂 IS, LizzyM between 75-80. I got that same request to contact an admissions to schedule the interview by a certain date - in my case August 27 - as well.

How are you guys checking your status? Through the secondary portal? Am I missing something?

I got an interview offer today so pumped. Emailed who I had to but she won't get back to me until Tuesday because of the Holiday. This is my second interview invite and I just submitted my secondaries really estatic!

I am IS from Akron, Ohio. I attend school at Waynesburg University in PA. I completed the secondary on 8/15 was verified on 7/31. I am a URM 4.0 GPA lower MCAT but that's ok. I am confident I will be sitting in a medical school class next fall.

What might have helped is my research at Yale Medical School (the summer of 2013 focusing on DNA repair pathways) and at Harvard Medical School (summer 2014 autism spectrum disorder).
I also have served for the American Medical Student Association the last two years as national officer. This year I am serving as a member of the board of trustees.
I also have tons of service and volunteer hours as well as playing a varsity sport (tennis).

This is such a wonderful opportunity. One step closer to helping so many people I'm over the moon.

Woo! II received yesterday at 8:00AM (ET). Could not (unfortunately) schedule an interview date as the office is out until September 3rd.
OOS Applicant

Can anyone share some timeframes?
Time from II to actual interview date and interview to acceptance?

Cheers, and good luck!

did I miss the boat if I apply now?
Also, I talked to a representative over the phone. She mentioned that my II (August 29th @ 8:00AM) was still in the "first batch".
So for those wondering if it is too late...it is definitely not!

Complete 8/15, IS. Haven't heard anything yet.

Also, I'm worried I that may have been vague on my secondary prompt. I am an immigrant and talked about my immigration experience. I also mentioned that being bilingual has helped me in a few instances as a volunteer (translating). Of course, I didn't remember a specific story about it. I just tied my general experience into cultural competency. Do you think the lack of a specific story will be a problem for them?

Anyone interviewing on Oct 13? I am going to the meet & greet the day before as well.

I submitted about the same time, and still no communication. Suggestion: Don't beat yourself up about the secondary. It is so impossible to predict what readers are looking for or what they like. It sounds as if you provided enough to pique interest. Maybe, though, it would be a good idea to recall a specific story before your interview--particularly a story that illustrates your willingness to help others. After all, the point of talking to you is to determine goodness of fit for the profession and for that particular school. Stories convey more vividly than abstractions, and you have some. Get friends and family to help in the recall process--they are likely to remember what you talked about in the past.

Now if I can just take my own advice and quit chewing my nails and checking my email every hour. . . . Good luck to you, DocStrange!

If I do get an II, I think I can elaborate on everything a bit more during the interview. Still waiting on news from this school and others, fingers crossed. I have to remember that it's still early in the interview season. SDN is not a good place to gauge time scale imo. Good luck to you as well!

I got an II last week! I was complete as early as you possibly could be, so don't lose hope friends!

Congrats!

For anyone who has already interviewed here, what were your impressions of the school and the interview day? I interviewed recently and did not end up with a good impression

Uh-oh. Could you say (or hint?) more? Was it a kind of global dislike, bad atmosphere, or a specific turn-off?

Just received acceptance email. Good luck to everyone! Anyone interested in meeting up to study year 1 material (biochem, anatomy, etc), let me know as I intend to begin very soon.

I thought that October 15th is the first date of acceptance at all schools?

I just felt like the whole day was really unorganized and inefficient, we had a presentation 9-10 then a 2 hour break with absolutely nothing to do until lunch at noon. The tour was okay, but the students were M1s and didn't really seem to know about a lot of the facilities (the facilities are all really nice though, just opened this year). We didn't really get the chance to interact with many current students. My first interview was very unprofessional and inappropriate, when I stated an opinion he didn't agree with he actually told me that me having that opinion was an indication of how naive and uninformed my generation is. My second interview was just totally irrelevant and really awkward. I just didn't really get the feeling that the students and faculty were excited to be there or cared if I ended up going there.

M2 here chiming in. I'm sorry to hear that you had such a disappointing experience with our school. If anybody has questions about what it's like to be a student here, feel free to ask me. I'll stop by once in a while to check on this thread.

P.S. From your SDN name, I'm guessing you went to school in Ann Arbor? Nice town.

OMG. Thank you for the details. My friend who interviewed there last year also gave Toledo a less-than-stellar review. Caution to self, BengaliBrat: the interview may not be entirely representative of the school. (My Interviewing Self is much less amazing than my "Real" Self! :panda:) Still, getting a couple of reports such as this one does make me a bit hesitant. Appreciate the heads up!

Thats a really good point, the interview definitely may not be representative. I'm sure Toledo has a great program, and the facilities were absolutely amazing (probably the nicest I've seen so far), I just didn't get a great impression overall. Don't have a bad expectation of the school though when you interview! I may have just had a bad day there, and it was only the second or third day so they may still be working things out with the schedule and everything. I'm sure it's a great med school

And, of course, the people who choose to go there really shape it! 🙂 Maybe we will be among them!

I agree with some of the sentiments that Wolverine2013 had, but overall I really enjoyed my day there.

I agree that the interview day was a bit disorganized, although I was one of the lucky ones and didn't have the huge break before lunch. I've interviewed/toured at a couple schools, and I will also agree that the facilities are really nice. Lots of new construction, although it can tend to sprawl a bit, because they are not cramped for space when compared to other schools located in metro areas.

My overall impression with the school was that it is a very down to earth, nuts and bolts medical school. It didn't make high in the air promises about huge opportunities in the area, or try to sell you on what could be. The stress of the school is really their ability to get you through Step 1, and round out your education with clinical and research experience. We were told from multiple people that from M1 to M2 the material that you are presented and the exams you are given are designed to prepare you for Step 1. They even require you to pass a practice exam of the Step 1 to continue in the program. They focus on offering tutoring, and as much help as they can to help you retain the knowledge and for them to retain you as medical students. Additionally, their free-form style for fourth year also gives you the initiative to decide what is best to improve your future career, and I appreciate that level of independence.

I know you are getting a little leery about the school BengaliBrat, but I would suggest that you keep an open-mind when you go to the interview. My interviews were fairly casual as many others probably report, but I enjoyed the conversations I had. UTMC is my number 1 choice, especially after my interview, and hopefully I'll be able to be a part of the school next year.

Thank you so much! Your description really balanced my previous impression and reminded me to keep an open mind. I appreciate your sharing, and I hope you get your number one choice. (After your endorsement, I am pretty sure that you should be UTMC's number one choice!!)🙂

I interviewed here; in short, it was great! Everyone was so friendly! Additionally, my interviewers challenged me and held me accountable for concepts that a pre-medical student should have a basic understanding of; something I appreciate greatly.
