2014-2015 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Complete for about a month (LizzyM ~70), IS, no response. Thinking this is a silent rejection.

Congrats to those of you with an II.

+3

Though I can totally understand why Davis would pass my app over (no primary care involvement, no Norcal ties).

Too lazy to go through last year's thread, but I think some people from early completion dates were granted IIs around Nov-Dec? It seems a lot of schools have this approach where they grant IIs in order of completion date and then go back and review all the other apps they "silently held" for the last few II slots.

Hoping you folks get some good news! :luck:

I keep telling myself a silent rejection will be when my status says they've looked at my app and didn't make a decision...until then I'm hoping no news is good news! My virtual app is just sitting in a stack somewhere waiting to be graced by someone's eyes....hopefully?

I talked to my advisor and she said not too worry too much about not getting an II right away. She still thinks there's hope for me at Davis, so I imagine that's probably the case for others as well. That said, it's hard not to feel like you're getting a silent rejection :/.

Congrats to those that received IIs! I was wondering if any of you lucky ducks were MSTP applicants?

II last Tuesday (8/12), submitted 7/10. It's nice to finally have a locked interview after weeks of silence. Anyone else interviewing on October 17th?

Submitted my secondaries on 7/29, received an interview offer 8/15.

Havent been able to schedule one yet due to lack of appointments..

Quick question.. Does UC Davis take committee letters? Or do I have to send each recommendation separately?

Hold on peoples, its still like super duper early in the process, hold off on talk about silent rejections and whatnot. There's plenty of time left and until you get a rejection notice, you're still in the running.

pigs can fly too...

So this won't have any bearing on my deciding to go to Davis should I get in (let's be real I'd give up my first born child to attend UCD for med school), but does anyone know if the tap water at the med school tastes the same as the tap water in the city of Davis? Just curious. Davis tap water tastes funky and I wanna know if it's the same in Sac. #importantquestions

I am curious to get other peoples perspectives, what is it about Davis that you like so much? And, would you choose Davis over SD?

I'm not sure but here's a quote from their instructions:
Letters of Recommendation

The 30 calendar day deadline does not include the letters of reccomendation. We request at least three but no more than six letters of recommendation from persons who know you well enough to evaluate your potential as a physician. These letters may be accompanied by an undergraduate school's premedical committee evaluation. Professors, instructors, thesis advisors, and supervisors of special projects, clinical, volunteer or employment activities usually provide the most informative letters. Letters from teachers who do not know you beyond grades and class rank are discouraged. You may waive your access to letters of recommendation under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1977, and other laws. You can waive access to your letters through your school’s Pre-medical Advisory Committee or letter service. Once we have received the minimum required letters (three), the applicant portal will reflect that you have met the letter of recommendation requirement.

I like Davis because it's primary care and underserved oriented, both of which are important to me. I like that it has so many specialized tracks. I like that Davis Adcom members really seem to look at applicants holistically. I like NorCal a lot better than SoCal. And I know a few people who go there for medical school who love it. That said, UCSD is also an awesome school and it'd be a tough choice between the two. Also I've never actually been to either med school so my opinion might change after I visit them (if I visit them, gah). I've just been to the UC Davis undergraduate campus a few times and I know the tap water there isn't the best-tasting haha.

Ok cool, thanks!

Does anyone have any advice for an introvert, like myself, on how to practice for UC Davis MMI interview? I feel the MMI-style interview selects for extroverts, which means I need a miracle on that day to do well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. UC Davis is one of my top choices and my first II.

Just relax bud, the key is not being "introverted" or "extroverted". It's stating your opinions/ideas in a clear and concise manner, while possessing an identifiable, rational basis of thought to back them up. Show compassion, and understanding of each situation presented, and you'll be golden.

Yea I like what the person above me said. You need to be able to clearly communicate that you can think critically and be empathetic. I am pretty sure an introvert should be able to do this. Practice some teamwork scenarios with your friends. Or practice some ethical dilemmas.

Whoa- how did you get an October 3rd interview? The office told me they were up to november!

Hi Javert,
Congrats on the invite! After reading your post I too thought I would get a date in late Oct or Nov, but when I logged on I had the option for the 3rd or 10th of oct.

They do say to go ahead and plan my travel etc for this date, but official confirmation will be given a week before. I don't know if that is standard or not. Is your date a confirmed date?

No, I think their policy is just to confirm a week before- mine says requested date as well. Weird on the date thing though and I spoke to them on Monday and they said they are booked till the 31st. Guess you caught a lucky break huh! I'm debating calling to just confirm that no earlier dates are available but honestly I'll probably just let it be- don't wanna mess anything up now!

Javert,

The date thing has happened in other schools as well if I remember correctly. They don't show early interview dates and later open them. I have been on SDN for a while. I think if you like to interview early, calling and asking for the early interview date is okay. Because I saw only the 3rd and 10th offered for OCT, I didn't see your date. I checked AUG and SEP, but Oct 3rd was the first open.

Does anyone know how Davis does does interview invites? As in, is there a certain order that they send them out in, or certain days of the week that they send them out? I'm going crazy here...

I am an introvert too, and I did just fine at UC Davis MMI last year. Just be yourself, talk/speak/respond like how you would talk/speak/respond to anyone in your everyday life. Be interesting during your talk with the Dean though, that could give you an edge.

Last year I got my II 2 months after I submitted my secondary. And I believe there's no specific day of the week they would send them out.

You should be fine. Just plan your travel, you will most likely interview on your requested date!

Are you able to elaborate a little bit about the meeting with the dean? For example, if its one on one, what types of questions might help to prepare for, etc.

I am not sure if I am allowed to share details of my interview day (and they may change it this year)... but it's supposed to be a group talk (rather than interview) with the Dean, and my best advice for you is NOT TO PREPARE FOR IT!

Its best to not try to discern any order in which Davis gives out II. Just for reference, I received my invite on the day after Thanksgiving. They've been known to give out invites over weekends and holidays as well, so its best to sit tight and hope for the best. I know its hard, but that's just how it is.

Wait but forreal, how does the tap water taste in Sacramento?

Also, congrats to those with IIs! And to those that have already interviewed!

Umm, well I live near the med center, but I can't say that I've ever really thought about the tap water.. I drink it, and I don't cringe or anything. If that helps at all

Just received a II, secondary completed 8/07

IS, GPA 3.82, MCAT 33

Question though, their only available date was Nov 21st. I feel like that's pretty late, is anyone getting any earlier available dates. I went ahead and confirmed for November, but just wondering if earlier dates will show up. Thanks!

I don't think Nov 21st is too late. I know people who interviewed at UC Davis during the 2nd half of the cycle and were accepted.

I just received an II from UCD this morning. However, no available dates so you're in a much better place than I am right now. Lol.

Got my II this morning so I'll join in too! I'm also seeing no available interview dates, so looks like I'll be refreshing that page every 5 sec at work.

Complete 8/1, received II 8/23, LizzyM >75
