2014-2015 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I realize that they see all of your grades but I'm assuming they either consciously or subconsciously take special note of the prereq course grades since they will be seeing them twice, and in the case of the secondary they won't be in the context of the entire transcript. Mostly I'm concerned because one of my chem grades is the worst grade on my transcript (B-) and I don't want that to leave a bad impression, so I'm trying to situate it with other prereqs in which I had As. Maybe I'm over thinking this though haha

I agree. I made a B in intro biology, but have made A's in all of my upper division biologies. Can I just include the upper division hours instead of the intro classes that are considered pre-req's?

This, don't be scared that you didn't fill out the essays for the other programs. If you're not interested in them, then you're not interested in them. It has no bearing on your status on getting an interview/acceptance if you apply to the special programs or not.

SilentSoldier,

What if we're interested in working in underserved rural/urban areas, but are not entirely sure on a primary care specialty? Other than the ACE-PC program, none of the other programs are requiring you to select a primary care specialty, right? I just don't want to limit myself to just primary care, since it is too early to decide.

Remember, its not only primary care, but an interest in underserved communities. Rural/urban populations still need surgeons, IM specialties, etc. If you have an interest in helping out those communities and want to be a part of the cohort that really gets involved with them, then you should apply to those programs. If not, its okay because you can still get that experience as part of the UC Davis proper.

That's awesome!!

Have any out of state applicants received a secondary?

Complete 7/3. I put all of my intro classes down and not the advanced ones.

I don't have any "elements of your application that you feel might be concerning to the Admissions Committee." Is anyone else leaving this field blank? I did go to community college and then transfer to a 4 year. But I have a strong GPA & MCAT so I didn't think that would raise any red flags. Thoughts?

I left it blank as well. I feel like you shouldn't bring up anything that may seem like problem to you (like a slightly lower gpa or mcat), because I think this section is more for drastic things (criminal charge, academic dishonesty, etc). If everything looks pretty normal, I wouldn't rock the boat.

I've a question about 3 meaningful experience section in the secondary. In AMCAS, I've 3 meaningful experience and it doesn't include my research (have one 2nd author publication). For one of the meaningful one in AMCAS, i don't have anything else more to say to be used in the secondary. Can I use research as meaningful experience even though I didn't use that in amcas?

Thx!

I also swapped out one experience for another... don't think it should be a problem.

I had several experiences tied for those 3 most meaningful spots, so I felt the Davis secondary would be a good place to expand upon one that really got shortchanged with the 700 character limit in the primary.

I'm a bit confused on the course prereqs. It states that I have to submit 3 quarters = 1 year, however for my undergraduate university, 2 quarter classes = 10 units. Should I still submit 3 quarters, or should I fulfill the requirements based on unit minimums? Thank you!!!

Did you guys literally just copy and paste your experiences from AMCAS or does UC Davis expect us to rewrite some of that and elaborate on aspects not touched on in Amcas?

I elaborated and discussed how these activities contributed to pursuit of medicine. Some of the stuff I repeated like what I did, responsibilities, etc but I did elaborate for the most part to give the more insight to my interests and ambitions, etc. Hope that helps!

For Q1. aspect of the application that might be concerning to the admission, I was thinking of saying about not having leadership position (like officer position in school), but did a general job where I was in charged and trained new people. So at least I can put it out there that I do have some experiences despite drawing attention to that aspect of the application? Or just discuss about how I started with pre-requisites (P/NP courses) courses before taking transferrable courses. But got decent gpa overall because I did well after that. Concern would be that the admission might think that I would not be able to handle the school work since due to those pre-requisite courses.

For experience question, what if I only use 2 of the most meaningful experiences from the primary as part of this question, and use a new for the last experience? It would be about a labor job (with other experiences) that got me into academic for the first time after passing a class was all I cared about during high school. And finish with how I would be able to relate more easily with patients with that background. The job partially played a role in turning things around and getting into academic and pre-med. would it be ok to discuss about a general labor experience?

thanks

So I am confused if I should apply to the rural-PRIME program. I want to practice in a rural area, but I do not want to commit to a specialty yet. Do you think I would be at an advantage by applying for the program because it shows my devotion to their mission?

I'm out of state (went to undergrad in California) and got a secondary.

Freaking out/feeling annoyed about having to repeat my three most meaningful activities on the secondary. Do I pick the same three activities? Choose new ones? Try to write about specific things that happened? In my primary application, I already addressed how each of my activities prepared me for medicine. Anyhow, being decisive never was my best quality. 😉

anyone notice the typo...
4. The Rural-Program In Medical Education is designed for students interested in becoming physician leaders in rural California communities. Curricular enhancements include weekll seminars, hands-on skill sessions covering laceration repair, obstetric delivery, CPR, etc., mentorship with rural physicians, 3rd year rural clinical rotations and leadership opportunities related to rural health. Link to Rural-PRIME Website: http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/mdprogram/rural_prime/index.html If interested, please tell us why you would like to be considered for the program. Otherwise, please insert "not applicable".

Not a big deal, just find it amusing!

I have a question regarding the "what have you been doing since AMCAS?" prompt.

If we haven't added any new activities since AMCAS, but want to write about what's been going on recently with our AMCAS activities, we don't have to include reference information... right? Can we just say "see AMCAS for reference contact information?"

I know it seems hard to write more about the meaningful activities, especially if you were like me and not only did you have your most meaningful activities written in the ECs section but they were the basis of your personal statement as well. I can tell you that its okay to be a bit redundant and they even mention that in the secondary I believe. That is to say, don't copy/paste but maybe put things in a different light, you may have forgotten something that you did in that experience, or maybe even have something happen recently since turning in your app.

Received a secondary yesterday 😍

In state applicant with 31-32 MCAT and >3.90 GPA (I'd like to remain somewhat anonymous :ninja:)

For out of state applicants, does anyone know if secondary invites based off a holistic review? Or purely just numbers?

I was the opposite. I added it last month (around June 1st), but I was verified last Wednesday. I also got mine at 1:16am on Friday like @lojanguyen

This is true.
Just a word of advice for those still waiting for invites, don't bother trying to figure out when Davis might offer interview invites. They're known to offer invites on weekends and holidays ( I received my invite on the Friday after Thanksgiving). It'll probably save you guys some stress.

Is anyone having trouble receiving the confirmation # email? I have been waiting a few hours for it now.

Secondary complete 7/8, Interview Invite 7/14 (signed up for 8/15 interview slot)

Congrats!! Good luck in August, and be sure to let us know how it goes!

I hope I'll be getting some Davis love soon...just waiting (impatiently) on my undergrad committee to get my letters in!

Do we still have a chance at getting a secondary? 🙁 I submitted my primary like 3 days after it opened... In-state too (3.23GPA / 39 MCAT)

Last letter of rec submitted today (FINALLY). Hope to be invited for an interview soon. (IS, 3.75, 33)
