2014-2015 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

Does anyone know how many students UC Irvine typically accepts? As in, how much the waitlist moves and how many people deny their acceptances? I just had my interview two days ago. Btw, I was given my interview last Monday so it seems they may STILL be awarding interviews.
They have 104 spots and send out 200 acceptances. The movement from the alternate list is not very certain..in some years there seems to be a lot of movement and others there is minimal. All would be more clear by the end of the month when the accepted folks have to make the choices. Till then...all you can do is hope for the best..for urself and others. Hope this helps.

Uci's wait list is ranked right?

I know that there are high and low wait lists, but would people who interviewed earlier in the season have a higher chance of getting in?

As far as I am aware..its not ranked. All have a equal shot at it🙂

Unranked was also my understanding. They will try to maintain the "class diversity". It seems a little discouraging...the waitlist pool seems huge especially with the added interview dates this year, but same class size.

do they really waitlist everyone that isn't accepted? I've heard that they do SOME post-interview rejections... seems like they leave a lot of people in limbo w/ such a long WL

But based on an earlier post, it looks like they had 15 interview dates and assuming 40 people per date....that's 600 people! And only 200 acceptances? That's not half as others have said....unless you mean 200 outright accepted?

I think about a third are accepted outright but overall, half the number of interviewees are accepted (i.e. 200 accepted outright and 100 accepted from the alternate list - hopefully).

is it true that everyone they interview is either accepted or placed on the alternate list? people have posted conflicting responses to that question on this thread.

Has anyone from the 3/16 interview group heard back yet??

bump!

Dr. Peterson said 27-35% accepted, and rest on alternate list.

After today..the last interview date for for UCI is 4/27. Best of luck to all interviewing. Hopefully there is some movement to the alternate list soon. One of the very few schools still interviewing....Its been a long wait..and still continues.

Is UC Irvine receptive to update letters? And if so, when? Thanks!

weird and totally pre-emptive question since I'm interviewing uber late (4/27): IF by some miracle I'm accepted to UCI SOM, do they require fingerprinting? I ask because I need to get fingerprints for another school and would prefer to just get it done all at once since it's cheaper vs. doing it two separate times.

Thanks!

I don't think there is a fingerprinting requirement.

Does anyone if UC Irvine is receptive to "why was I rejected/how can I improve my application?" calls?

Does Dr. Peterson make all of those acceptance calls for a particular interview date on the same day?

Oh no sorry to hear :/. How did you feel your interview went?
My student interview went really good and the faculty one was good too.

It's my stats holding my back, so we'll see for waitlist movement.

Just saw the online status and my status of Alternate list date changed to 4/30 . Till yesterday it was a much earlier date (around when I interviewed and was placed on the Alternate list) . Has that happened to anyone else too? Just curious.

Mine also still says the earlier date as well.

This is the first time I've heard of this....

Maybe a current student can clarify. Actually I would really wanna know. I'm from Orange County and UCI was my top choice.

Copy/pasting from a post from last year:

"Irvine is P/F for preclinical years, but it has a hidden ranking system (i.e., they keep track of your performance, use that to rank you by the end of the fourth year). That rank is reported when the Dean or whoever writes your letter of recommendation for your residency applications, not as a "2/100" but more like "performed at the top of his class", "performed in the top half of his class," or... "performed in a satisfactory manner."

From what I understand every school has some ranking system for deans letters and AOA determination. There's really no way around that...

Its P/F first year (top students in classes gets an additional statement in their dean's letter from what I know) and 2nd year is H/P/F.

I believe it's called "lettering" if you score in the top 5% for a block during the first year. Then during second year, the Honors kicks in and essentially takes the part of the "lettering". From everything I've heard and learned this cycle, it doesn't matter where you place in your class as long as you do extremely well on the USMLEs. Class rank can be seen important if you perform poorly on the USMLEs and is also used to rank of AOA. I don't know anything about the Dean's letter to residency.

Also did anyone hear about this year's "highly ranked alternate list" emails?

no... where did you hear about that?

damn all these misinformed messages and people are gonna be the death of me. i have not heard of this either. the only thing similar is dr. peterson mentioning on interview day uci having 2 waitlists, a high and low one

I just read through a student handbook for UCI SOM last updated on 7/30/2014. It only says that the grading system was Honors/Pass/Fail. It didn't specify year, but I would take that to mean that it is the same for all four years. It also goes into some detail about the Dean's Letter saying that each clerkship instructor must write a narrative summary of the student's performance that is transcribed directly into the Dean's letter without editing for submission to residency programs. Read all about it if you want: http://www.meded.uci.edu/docs/SOM_Student_Handbook.pdf (page 42 for Dean's Letter stuff, page 56 for grades). I don't know how accurate it is, it also says that the attendance policy is 80% for all lectures, but I heard it was 50% from several of the students, so it could be outdated.

Any news for the 4/13 interview group yet?

You guys were from the 4/13 group?Congrats!
