2014-2015 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sigh, wait-listed as well 🙁. Hoiehaie you were in the same group as me, if I remember right. Hopefully we get off it, but I'm not holding out too much hope. Thank god I have other acceptances out of state - this will most likely end up as my goodbye to California, oh well.

Although rejections are, by definition, the worst outcome, I find that waitlists have attached to them a certain cruelty: hope. They string you and many others along for months and months ultimately to reject you (most likely) or accept you after putting you through the grinder.
Yeah, and the fact that Brian is so positive and upbeat almost makes it that much worse. Last year like 1 person got in off the w8list from SDN iirc 🙁. I think most people that get in here tend to go...

+1 for the waitlist 🙁 is it me or does UCSD not do any rejections post-interview? Based on the threads from the previous years, I've only seen acceptances and waitlists 😵

I had a friend who also interviewed in the first group last year. He was outright rejected. So that's something.

🙁 So sorry to hear about the waitlists. Hope you guys get some good news shortly! This is a cruel, emotionally-draining process. Really, I was hoping to see far more acceptances in the thread.

As per my interview day, Brian said they give out 1/2 waitlists, 1/3 acceptances, and 1/6 rejections. So a small faction do get outright rejections – but there's probably some sort of reporting bias on SDN.

So i'm thinking out of 600 interviewed 300 gets waitlisted 200 get accepted and 100 gets rejected

and assuming the 30-50 get's off waitlist that means out of 200 who gets accepted only 50-70 goes for a class of 100???

somethings not adding up right ...

Not everyone who is accepted chooses to attend.

ACCEPTED!! What is a good source for information regarding housing??

Thanks!

Congratulations! Wondering the same! I just sent in a housing application so I could get on the waitlist asap. As per our tour guide, you can change your preferences on the application any time you want, so the sooner you send it in the higher you are on the list.

Anyone care to chip in regarding Rita vs. Miramar vs. Mesa vs. off-campus housing for the first few years? I have a car, so I'm a bit unsure of how I could park at Rita... and Coast would be a dream, though the waitlist is over a year long. 🙁

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Let's hope Mr. Zeglen had a really good time at Disneyland and has decided to send us all acceptances. That 50% waitlist rate is pretty stiff. 😢

50% waitlist rate? That's way better than the odds of getting into most schools post interview. What kind of drugs are you on? Oh wait you're just being your histrionic humble-bragging drama queen self. Your facade is laughable and I'm shocked that no one else has seen through your bull. You must be really insecure if you're still getting off to this same humble-bragging validation-seeking trash after holding a bunch of acceptances. Put a sock in it or get a damn therapist, instead of polluting sdn with this crap.

Please stop personally attacking her. Your insults are not benefiting anybody, and further, she did nothing wrong.

I'm merely calling her out on her BS. her obnoxious humbling-bragging behavior and obsessive validation-seeking behavior is grating and totally unnecessary. if you can't recognize that it's probably because you're just as guilty as her of pulling the same ****. On the bright-side at least all the schools she got into are LCME accredited so she can get some serious therapy for her ridiculous self-esteem issues she obviously has (w/ the **** she keeps posting) and some thorazine. If she doesn't like getting called out and held accountable for this bs she should stop posting this histrionic braggy garbage.

According to SDN rule, we should just report troll post and not respond. 🙂

This thread took a turn. I'll be the first to admit I'm not...happy...about my sitting on the sidelines while others are getting action. But I wouldn't want to attack others for no good reason in their moments of joy especially since I wouldn't want that happening to me if I ever get lucky again.

There are way too many people across these threads who do not realize how fortunate they are to be in their positions. I cannot tell you enough about how many conversations I've been in the last few months about fretting over interview invites just to find out the person has already received at least five and now recently, may even already have an acceptance or two under their belt. Some of us have been waiting months for just a single interview invite let alone a chance to be placed on a waitlist, and I find it to be rude that they're even considering to place their medschool "concerns" next to mine. I would love for my biggest question at the end of this cycle to be do I want to go to the school in the midwest or to the one closer to the coast? Last week, after three months, I had finally received my first invite and I already consider myself fortunate and lucky regardless of its outcome be it waitlist, acceptance, or flat out rejection.

Although I disapprove of how abrasive and unprofessional boltedbicorne's comment was, the message I assume that was trying to be made should not be simply reported and disregarded as a result.

Change fortunate to "they worked incredibly hard to get where they are and are enjoying the rewards" and I may agree with a little of what you say. Just because some had more success than you or I doesn't mean we get to dictate what they are allowed to say and feel on a community forum. Just like you have your opinions I have mine. My opinion happens to be that we should always celebrate excellence if it is not achieved through diabolical means. Hard work is not fortunate ... And I have worked really hard and am no where near on the level of other applicants. It is all relative. I too feel exceptionally fortunate to have had an interview and have one more lined up after applying to 24 schools.... But I am not going to hold my lack of success against others who have had more success. Instead - I am going to support excellence and attempt to foster good relations with people.... But I will not agree to belittle or begrudge others achievements because they are better than mine. Regarding the applicant in question - I have not read one post on any forum that has been anything other than positive to others or indicating nervousness in the process. They have done nothing to deserve the barrage of vitriol that was spewed their way... Nothing! IF you cannot celebrate others success because you are unhappy with your own lack of it, that is not their problem and they should not be made to feel guilty about it. Don't presume they they are simply lucky or fortunate because we know nothing about their personal stories and how they got to where they are. Instead ... Try and go with the flow (which is really hard I know seeing others with multiple acceptances - I do get it) and realize that there will always be someone ahead of you in the bell curve. Really.... You may end up working with them one day and the patient will want teamwork and cooperation.... They won't care where you went to school .... Only if you can help them.

I am not attempting to dictate what they are "allowed" to say. My message was meant to impart some things for consideration and in no way did I want to give the notion that those accepted were not deserving of it. My instate school made a presentation to the premed club I was in my freshman year that they receive enough qualified applicants each year to fill their class size three times over and yet there are only so many seats. "Hard work is not fortunate" in a world where there are just as many seats as there are deserving candidates. Just as there were MCAT questions with two answers looking really good, there were probably decisions made on applicants whom the admissions board struggled to decide who would be the better fit and in the end, it could have been the slightest inclination that lead to one's selection over another and who can really say if it was the right call or not.

I realize my own lack of success is not their problem. But last time I checked, we're all trying to become doctors here and compassion and thoughtfulness are qualities I have seen presented on several medical school school websites these last few months. We'd all love to end this cycle saying we were accepted into one of our dream schools and for some of us it is a real possibility. And so I understand why despite being already accepted, some may still be sad because their dreams school just barely slipped their reach. But, if May comes around and you at least have choices in front of you, at least be grateful for having them out of consideration to those who will have to be making tougher decisions in order to become a doctor.

Hey dudes, thank you so much for all the support. Gosh, I've said this time and time before, but I'd be thrilled to be classmates with any one of you.

BoltedBicorne is just a ludicrously persistent troll who obviously didn't have anything better to do for Halloween. They seem to love personally singling me out and the more they are able to elicit a reaction from the sdn crowd, the more they will try to return in various incarnations. If anyone would like to broach this subject further, either PM me (I promise I will reply) or summon me in the 2019 thread. That is all.

~~Such posts detract from UCSD. Let's try to get this thread back on topic.~~

Damnit woman, this is like showing a Free Beer sign at a bar window to an alcoholic who's not allowed in the bar (yet)...😉

Oh Mah Gawd...just got so pumped! @hellanutella Please keep us posted which school you end up choosing! I hope you choose UCSD, it would be great to have such supportive people as classmates such as yourself! I'm really pulling for everyone on the wait list, and I wish you all the best of luck! Hang in there guys! I also just want to shout out to the SDN community and thank you all so much for the support! I've been a long time lurker from the very beginning with the MCAT all the way to now! It has been a loooooong process and I am so happy and grateful to all of you for the way my journey as a pre-med is ending and my new adventure as a medical student is beginning! High Fives for everyone :highfive::clap::soexcited: !!!!!! (p.s.... any 10/21 interviewees out there?)

I know – doesn't that photo sell UCSD so well! @Zaynecarrick hope they shoot you an II soon! (Then you can indulge in the many SD breweries as well). Wish you guys didn't have to go through so much of a wait. 🙁

@Tman90 Wait. What. I was a 10/21, too! I'm heavily leaning SD. Unfortunately I think finaid will be a major player in my decisions, but on the upside SD will likely be my cheapest choice. Loved the school, the programs, the students, and the location. You can bet I'll be at second look for sure.

The community on here has been awesome. I know some people like to rag on SDN, but if it wasn't for all the advice on these forums I think my cycle would have been an utter train wreck. I don't have any peers/colleagues in the premed circle, but I've met lots of phenomenal folks on here and they've been a huge source of motivation and support.

Troll reported. I will always stand up for Ms. Nutella. That said, my waitlist status at UCSD is making me somewhat sad that she and I probably won't be classmates next year 🙁

Oh goodness gracious, you're making me blush. I'm wishing you nothing but the best! Hope you have some California love just around the bend.
If I ever bump into you IRL, I owe you a nutella sammich and/or sushi.

Y'all need to chill.

Gonna unsubscribe from this thread since I don't have anything else to add following my receipt of decision.

Cheers.

Ya I wish there was some link in the email where we could pay our deposit! Haha. I think this is just stemming from me not being able to contain my excitement! @Tman90

First post as well! Very excited about this acceptance and am likely to attend. @Tman90 what is the 2 week deadline? Also, I just did the housing application, which showed a 7 to 10 month wait for Rita. Does that mean we would get in before we matriculate? Thanks and excited to meet you guys at second look!

Woooo, congratulations! 😀 I am ridiculously excited for revisit.

I'm not sure about the housing, as I put a move-in date for mid-August. (I believe UCSD's orientation starts the 25th of August?).

Thanks! Ya, I put August 1st as the move in day, but I know that's too early, haha. Hoping to get into Rita! It looks so beautiful and modern 🙂.

Welcome @LA | MD ! Hope to see you next year as well! According to MSAR there is a 2 week deadline to submit your intent to matriculate form. However, I recognize the neuroticism inherent in SDN so take that with a grain of salt and DON'T FREAK OUT (I might be saying that just to calm myself down, haha). MSAR says Jefferson has a 3 week deadline but it was more like 5 weeks. Can anyone confirm about this 2 week deadline business?
Thanks! Got it, haha. Maybe it's two weeks from the date of the packet delivery? Hopefully? I did email Mr. Zeglen asking if there was anything we had to do at this point to accept the offer. I will be sure to update you guys once he responds if that would be helpful.

Where did you find the housing app!??! haha

I heard to get on this ASAP from one of the students.
