2014-2015 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone gotten out of hold purgatory? Or been outright rejected?

Does anyone know when second look is? I don't think they've given us the formal information yet, right?

As per the acceptance email: "We are planning a revisit/second look event for accepted applicants on April 10-11, 2015 - more details will be made available to you as the date nears."

....aaannnd this is on the same days as one of my other top choices' second look. 😢 Hope these dates work for you guys!

Today is the day. Anyone remember what time Brian said emails would go out?

Is UCSD just REALLY slow with application reviews? I received my secondary request 10 weeks after my primary was verified, and nothing at all post-secondary. How long has it taken for you guys to receive ANYTHING after submission of your secondaries?

I'm in exactly the same position. I got my secondary 3 weeks after they received my primary and I was over the moon! 🙁 Silence ever since. It's my understanding that UCSD actually rejects applicants though, so I guess we're just stuck in a pile somewhere?

I wish UCSD had a more transparent admissions process.

You have University of Michigan on one spectrum with social media and an admissions tracker and UCSD on the complete opposite side of the spectrum of complete silence with an outdated website.

I can't complain much seeing as this kind of process is pretty standard amongst most schools. Michigan is an outlier in this area. Actually, I still haven't heard from a few schools I applied to last time.

Lol yeah I guess I was just speaking from the perspective as they did not even send confirmation email that application was complete or secondary was received

Months ago, I called UCSD admissions with a app related question and Brian answered the phone. He was incredibly nice, helpful and more forthcoming than I expected in regards to their admissions process - might not hurt to give them a call? To help with the nerves? He definitely helped calm mine at the time…

It took ~7 weeks for them to give my app a slap.

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could shed me some light in regards the autobiography assignment and the part "what've you done since your graduation." My secondary is due the 20th of this month, and I spent a lot of time trying to come up with a good autobiography that differ from my AMCAS PS, since the latter was like a comprehensive autobiography as well. Also keeping the 6000 characters limit was a challenge. However, I came up with an autobiography with approximately 5100 characters and I am really happy with it. Now I am debating if I should insert a paragraph regarding "after my graduation." I graduated in May 2014, right after I went to a ten day trip to central america to practice spanish and explore the culture, I continued studying for MCAT which I took in Sep,continued volunteering and completing the AMCAS primary , And took a part time meaningless job to generate income, since it has a flexible schedule and does not require long-term commitment. I've been spending copious amount of time and energy filling out secondaries. So realistically I haven't done anything special or worth to mention. Should I insert the paragraph since it does not have any important info? if I do where? after my autobiography conclusion like a paragraph apart? (because if I insert before the conclusion of my Autobiography it will mess up the flow of my essay). Any suggestions ? Thanks

I felt the same way while writing my autobiography (though mine had minimal overlap with my PS). I opted to leave out all the boring stuff I've been doing since graduation (I felt that if I added another paragraph it would take away from my ending and my essays flow). Thus, in my lowly fellow premed opinion, I say go with your gut and what you feel is strong and best represents you. 🙂

Thanks for sharing, I felt the same way as you therefore I left the boring stuff out.

MSTP interview invitation for mid-January..I wonder how many spots are left.

Congraaaaats! Folks keep saying this is the endgame for MSTP, but I've still got some fingers crossed. Mind sharing stats or complete date?

I'm assuming since I sent my secondary on 9/29 and have not received anything yet means I'm rejected?

did you receive a "hold" email? they will be sending more interview invites in January, fingers crossed for us!

I am interviewing here on 1/15 and I have a question concerning the MMI. Will the interviewers have follow-up questions after your initial response to the prompt, or will they just stare at you if your response does not take up the entire time period? I have heard of both occurrences, I know UCLA/Geffen interviewers provide follow ups, and I am hoping SD does as well!

Forgive me if this question is illegal, not sure if the non-disclosure covers this. Thanks!!

Was hoping any current students could shed some light on what its like to have exams on mondays and opportunities for social life, going out downtown, etc... and when do people typically do that sort of stuff (i.e. after exams?)

I'm a current MS1 at UCSD and I can answer this for ya. The Monday exam thing is kind of a double-edged sword. On one hand, it's really nice to have the whole weekend to study for the exam and having 2-3 (sometimes Friday is just a review) days with no new material before the exam is actually quite nice.

That being said, the fact that we typically start in with the next block immediately after the test actually really sucks. It's tough to start a new block when you're mentally exhausted from taking an exam.

However, Monday exams definitely do not prevent people from going out. Most nights after tests a large portion of our class goes out to downtown or pacific beach to blow off steam. There are plenty of opportunities for social life at UCSD. Our class has had multiple club nights downtown and different parties for various things, as well as tons of other stuff going on (beach days, rock climbing, game nights, surfing, etc.). Don't let Monday tests dissuade you from coming here, cause it's awesome at UCSD!

Anyone else waiting for an interview? I was complete on the first week of November. LOL. I don't know if I should keep my hopes up after all this time :-(

When I called, they mentioned that they are going through the waitlisted applications right now and either way we should hear something back by the end of this month.

Second thought, maybe you were not waitlisted... then I have no idea! lol

By wait listed, you mean the pre-interview hold, right?

Do you mean placed on pre-interview hold? Or waitlisted post-interview?

Hi all. I'm entirely unsure if I'm allowed to ask this or if anyone who has interviewed here is even allowed to answer (thus, please feel free to put me in line if need be!), but does UCSD MMI format include acting based scenarios with actual actors?

We are not allowed to answer, sorry.

I've been waiting since I was marked complete on sept 3rd. Really unsure of what to do. Might call them tomorrow, but wondering if it's even worth it. I'd fly out there in a heartbeat to interview, but this entire silence thing sucks.

Just got off the phone with them. They said that a few II's went out this morning but there really aren't that many slots left so chances are pretty slim right now. They're hoping to have everyone notified of their status (reject vs II) by the end of the month.

So not that much longer now. Just cross your fingers and hope for the best if you're still waiting.
