2014-2015 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haven't gotten my site placement yet, but I'm assuming I'll be in Urbana in the fall, unless some kind of Chicago miracle happens. I did my undergrad at Urbana-Champaign as well, so if anyone has any questions about anything U-C related feel free to PM me.

Why do you think you won't get placed at Chicago?

Dr. Girotti said at my interview day that this late in the game it's going to be less likely to get Chicago/your first choice. Also, people throughout the thread have been getting not their first choice placements the past month or two. Honestly, it could happen, that's why I haven't started looking for an apt or anything, but I am prepared for the possibility that I might probably end up at my 2nd choice.

Ok. Thanks for the info! As an OOS I'm really set on Chicago, so that is unfortunate news - I guess there's still hope.

Good luck, I really hope you get it! If not, UIUC is an awesome and gorgeous campus/college town (Though I'm biased, I guess), as well as a world class research University so research opportunities should be great. If you're into that.
I will be in urbana! 🙂 also for those of you in urbana are you guys planning to live in the residence halls or live in an off campus apartment?
You'll definitely want an apartment. Unless you want to pay way more and live with 18 y/o undergrad freshmen...

Yeah, I haphazardly put Rockford above Urbana, which in hindsight might have been a poor decision. I just figured I would get Chicago. Waiting on the site placement is going to be terrible!

Good luck to you too! I hope we both get our top choice!

Btw great avatar. TBP is awesome!

Errah, errah!

Well, either way if it's not Chicago, it's Urbana for year 1 at least. I honestly just ranked Chicago 1st because I want to live in the big city for the first time in my life and gain clinical experience from the diverse set of pt's that hospitals in such a huge city provide. But each campus has its own thing going for it, so I'm not gonna lose sleep over where I'm placed.

The wait is nothing like the previous sets of waiting though... haha. Waiting for status change, waiting for mail correspondence, I'm way more chill now haha.

I will be in Urbana as well! 🙂 and I'm planning on living in an off campus apartment but really want to find roommates before beginning the apartment hunt. Also, a new UIC Facebook group has been created: https://www.facebook.com/groups/351919861669543/. A separate group should be coming soon(ish) for the UPR (Urbana Peoria Rockford) Track as well!

Awesome! I was thinking about living in an apartment as an option as well. Have you looked at pricing yet? Also which campus will you be on after 1st year?

I actually think rockford is going to give you great clinical experience if you do end up there! I chose rockford as my top choice although I'm not doing the rmed program. I'm a scribe in the ED right now and I've spoken with attendings, residents and medical students from the rockford/peoria campuses and they are very happy with their choice! Some of them did choose chicago as their top choice but they're glad where they actually ended up. There are definitely a lot of hospitals at both of these campuses and an added bonus of being in rockford is that there are no residents. This means that you get to see a LOT more when you are doing rotations and you learn early on how to work with attendings directly. On other campuses you are sometimes out in the hallway watching the resident/attending physician!

Also I joined the new uic Facebook group and I contacted the webmaster regarding a separate page for urbana students. He said that last year the uic class of 2019 acted as a joint page for all campuses until the dean at the urbana campus made a separate page.

Is there not a separate building for graduate/medical students? Or were you referring to living in the same area as freshmen? Also do you know any of the more popular apartment options? If so are there shuttles that take you on campus and to grocery stores? I might not have access to a car so just trying to make sure everything will be accessible even if I live off campus!

I actually just started looking at apartments online last night! Prices seem to be pretty affordable 🙂 I'm hoping to have 2 or 3 roommates and go apartment hunting together next month...once I find roommates lol And I'm on the Peoria track!

Yes to all of the above. Graduate housing is...okay.... But if you want a kitchen and to feel like you have a place of your own to come back to after a long day, then you want an apartment. I lived at Sherman for a year and it is the smallest dorm in the world.

edit - not medical student housing , but Grad student.

I'm probably opting for a ****ty apartment near campus so I can just walk back and forth. If I could suggest a retail estate company to avoid it'd be Green Street Realty.

Hey all,
Just another offer to answer questions you might be having at this late stage in the game. I'm an M2 UIC. I don't check this thread regularly, so don't post your questions here but if you PM me I'll get back to you. You can look at my MDApps for more info about me.

What is your opinion of Goodwin-Green?

Just started looking myself, and I'm on the Peoria track as well. I'm hoping for roommates also. I hear parking is a bear so I'd like to get something within walking distance.

Is the "site" on the financial aid award accurate of where you end up at??

Thank you! I really hope you're right because it says "Chicago" for my site, but I my site preferences card only got there yesterday (Saturday), so Chicago may just be a place holder. Didn't get any scholarships, however. Any OOS accepted applicants receive the Dean's Scholarship which covers the out-of-state tuition difference?

Where are you reading this from?

Where are you reading this from?

From the Financial Aid Award Letter. I got an e-mail saying my Award Letter was available and I went ahead and set up a UIC account to view it. On the Award Letter, it listed my site as Chicago. But I literally sent my site preference card in on Thursday for 2-3 day shipping, and the Post Office worker said the system showed her it will arrive on Saturday. Unless the UIC office is open Saturday, I don't see how I'm already placed.

Does anyone know what the rate is for site change actually succeeding?

I'm trying to get moved to Chicago, but I don't know if I should even get my hopes up. I feel like I kind of got the shaft with my placement at my third choice early January.

I got the Dean's Scholarship. Is that tied to any particular campus? I'm hoping for Chicago as well.

Congrats Divadee! I don't think it's tied to any campus in particular; that's what I got from the online information about the Dean's Scholarship.

Did you find out about the Scholarship in your acceptance letter or in your Award Letter?

Anyone else wondering if admissions meeting is this week? Or is this thread already moving on to campus discussion/excitement talks? Also, is anyone clear on the turnaround for "decision pending"?

I am also wondering, since the "third Thursday" is technically this week. Just combed through last year's thread and it seems like after the March meeting, there was not any more decision movement until after the deadline to withdraw from multiple acceptances (which last year was May 15th, and this year is April 30th), after which some "decision pending"s began receiving acceptance phone calls. This makes sense to me because people were writing that they were offered spots in Chicago, which makes me think that they had been accepted to fill in the seats that had been withdrawn the week before. But I think it all depends on how many people withdraw from the class, which obviously changes year to year.

And I might also be completely wrong. All of this is 100% pure, unrefined, cold-pressed speculation.

I called the admissions office last week and the person I spoke with said that they plan to have a meeting sometime in April, and will make a few decisions then. She did not specify when the meeting would be held.

Good to know, thanks so much for calling! Let the status-checking commence once again. :nailbiting:

Chicago miracles can happen. I just got my placement there about an hour ago and was totally not expecting it since I thought it was full, so don't assume yet!!

So, for UPR track (and if anyone can speak to Rockford especially), how much are cars needed..?

I live in peoria right now and work as a scribe at one of the hospitals. The two hospitals I am aware of (methodist and st. Francis) as well as the med school are fairly close to each other. But all of theses places are downtown. You could live downtown and walk i believe but i would definitely recommend living in a safer area and having a car since i'm not sure how reliable the buses are. I would suggest speaking with a current medical student about this (you can join the Facebook page and ask one of them).

I am on the rockford track which i have heard a lot about from residents and attendings in the hospital so I can tell you that you will most definitely need a car. Some of the clinics will be like 20 min apart.

Where are you all living in Champaign?

I'm probably living in either one south or one north. Take a look at their website! The rooms are all furnished and there are a lot of amenities. 🙂
I've heard from friends and a faculty member who lived at One North, it is not a good place to live. I'm going this weekend to check out several other places.

Oh really? What did they not like about it? And let me know how your search goes! 🙂

The student I know well said it was a nightmare. The shuttle wasn't always available, to loud to study at times, very cold in the winter, and supposedly there's a train that comes through right behind the complex. I'll let you know how the search goes. I hear parking on campus is a nightmare and expensive so I'll need good shuttle service or someplace close.

Has anybody received information on Second Look day for the Chicago campus?

Hey, are there any females interested in discussing sharing a 2 BR apartment? I'm starting to look at properties online. Private message me for my number.
