2014-2015 University of Illinois Application Thread

M4 here -- the decision to start a UIUC medical school will impact the incoming 2019 class. More official information to come, as discussions are still occurring. (Sorry to be vague... But big changes might be coming, and I am very upset the school community and incoming class has gotten very little notice). The student councils will push to make sure all incoming students know asap the exact changes.
Well. This would be nice to know... 😵

Have you guys heard about the new state med school at UIUC? I wonder how it will affect us
From what I heard the current UIC students are disgruntled because the curriculum at CU isn't even remotely close to the caliber of Chicago... again everything I say is what I hear (as usual) so take it with a grain of salt?

To me though, this sounds excitingly new.

When I interviewed I asked the lady about the possibility of UIUC opening up a medical school and what she thought about it, and how it might change or affect UIC/us as incoming students and she just looked at me like :bored::bored::bored::bored: and that's when I felt I might have blown the interview. But I really do want to know, and I don't feel like it was an especially egregious question to ask, considering it does in fact apparently have implications for incoming students at the school...

It was good to ask, and honestly the game plan for UIC if UIUC opened has only been discussed with the upper, upper levels, it appears. Most faculty and students thought nothing would change.

For clarification (to another applicant above), UIUC medical school is separate from UIC. UIC for now will remain four regional campus; might one day become 3. Older discussions that UIC is "Chicago-centric" is not heard as much anymore... As each campus has great up and coming plans. Honestly, the URP regional campuses might actually have a better m1/2 curriculum than Chicago (systems-based vs traditional). Additionally, UIC students in Urbana will not be incorporated into the UIUC medical school.

I'm also curious about how the new medical school will affect the program at UIC. I wonder if it'll have an effect on research funding and UIC's standing. It appears that the two systems would look to collaborate in a way that benefits both UIUC and UIC, but I'm interested to see how it all develops and what happens realistically. I just hope it doesn't affect UIC negatively! Either way, I think having a engineering-based medical school is a great idea which creates a promising platform for biomedical advances, I just don't want it to come at the expense of UIC's program in any shape or form.

I interviewed in December, acceptance came 2 weeks later on a friday. I hand delivered the site placement card and deposit the following monday. Got my top choice placement a week later (Chicago!!). I have not received any correspondence yet about immunizations/tests/transcripts nor have I preemptively sent anything.

Speaking of which, when do we have to handle those requirements?

I'm working on the immunizations now and they're kind of a pain. I just made sure to have my offer acceptance letter received by the appropriate date - not sure the rest of the requirements have dates associated with them. I assume all of the items without a red text qualifier on http://www.medicine.uic.edu/UserFil...ile/Admissions Files/Chicago immunization.pdf would be required before starting classes, while the four items on the applicant portal (acceptance offer reply, hep B, transcripts, deposit) are required before officially enrolling, so, earlier than the others (varicella, tb, etc.).

I've been accepted. My deposit has been accepted and I've received correspondence from them as an accepted student...yet I still don't have anything criminal background or immunization related! I've called twice and they've said April is when they're doing that, but it seems like everyone has that stuff now!

Should I get my immunization records in order now? I'm just so unsure and I definitely don't want to mess it up

On the .pdf link I posted, there's a URL to begin their immunization-verification process through certifiedbackground.com. I would take a look at it and get started on it; I'll definitely need to make a few trips to my physician's office in the coming weeks, even though my dad kept meticulous records of my immunizations.

Is there a second look weekend at the Chicago campus?
I heard that there is a second look weekend only for Chicago campus. I haven't gotten any info on that yet, and I was assigned Chicago. Last year second look was one of the last weekends in April.

I called their office twice and they kept saying that an email with instructions on what to do with the immunization forms will be sent out later. Do you think this link you posted is the same link that they will be later sending out?

Wish someone would have told me about this sooner! Thanks for posting this!

I wasn't aware an email would be sent out, I just kind of went snooping around to see what I could find in terms of their immunization requirements. Obviously it can't hurt to get ready early but they may change things around in terms of what we need/don't need so it seems to me like it could be the link I posted but perhaps it's not finalized yet.

Update.

After some discussion, there will be no changes in the UIC school curriculum for the upcoming year. UPR students will have their M1 year in Urbana, as normal. There might be changes in the future - but for now, those accepted should not expect a surprise change. Sorry to cause worry.

-- Email sent out over the weekend, in case you guys did not see it--
Dear Colleagues, March 13, 2015

The University of Illinois College of Medicine congratulates the entire UIUC campus and the Carle Health System regarding the University of Illinois Board of Trustees' approval of a new medical school. Our College looks forward to many productive collaborations between the two sister medical schools. The UI College of Medicine pledges its unwavering commitment to the success of our current and incoming students and will ensure that adequate resources are provided throughout their education.

Current Ml students enrolled in the College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign who are Peoria- and Rockford-bound will still go to Peoria and Rockford in the Fall of 2015. Additionally, current Medical Scholars Program and Ml-M4 students who expect to remain in Urbana-Champaign will remain enrolled at the College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign until they complete their degrees.

We wish to clarify that, as in previous years, the incoming Ml class of Peoria-, Rockford- and Urbana bound medical students beginning their studies in the Fall of 2015 will enroll at the Urbana-Champaign regional campus of the College of Medicine. This decision has been made after extensive consultation with the University leadership, the College's regional deans, other College leaders, faculty, and students.

Sincerely, Dean Azar

I've got a buddy who interviewed 3/10 at another school and received a rejection letter in the mail 3/16. Talk about turnaround time. Meanwhile, I just sit here waiting 5+ weeks to hear news. At least he got the guillotine and not the slow torture, haha.

I interviewed on 3/4. Today my status changed from "evaluation not submitted" to "decision pending." On the day I interviewed, the associate dean told us that it was likely that the committee would meet a little later than the third Thursday this month. He didn't say why, but I hope my status change today is indicative of a Thursday meeting.

The last interview day is this Friday, plus it's Match week, so it sounds like the next round of decisions will be coming out next week.

The last interview day is friday? Is that official or are you just guessing?
Girotti did say "end of March", I was hoping it's an estimate and the meeting will be this week. Seems like that's not the case :/

I don't think any applicant/non-committee member could be absolutely sure that the last interview is today. I guess, based on last year's thread, it does seem like the interview period is likely coming to an end.

I agree with FriendOfTheCupcake that it doesn't seem very likely that they will be meeting this Thursday...given that they told us explicitly that they would be meeting later than usual. Fingers still crossed!

For all the other February meeting admits waiting for their campus assignment by mail... I got my financial aid letter email with the link to set up the my.UIC portal. After logging in and checking out the site, I found out my campus assignment after clicking on the "UIC Connect" tab at the top.

I just got an email asking me to sign into the UIC online portal to view my financial aid information. Two usernames and three passwords later, I clicked on the "admissions" section and it says "Fall 2015 Chicago Admissions Information, Term: 2015-Chicago; College: Coll of Medicine at Chicago"

Does this mean I got the Chicago campus? I haven't received site placement otherwise, but there's a tab below that says "Switch to a different campus", so I assume it means I'm placed at Chicago, right?

I turned in my deposit immediately after my feb acceptance and I have still not been assigned a campus. I called admissions and they said it will take "another couple of weeks" but it looks like other feb admits have been assigned a campus. This is so frustrating.

I called admissions to confirm whether I'd been placed at Chicago based on my online portal. I was told that the default is Chicago for everyone and that February admits should get their letters in a few weeks. They haven't even mailed them out yet. 🙁

I bet they're just telling you that because you beat the system.

How did you get into the financial aid portal? I got the email, but I couldn't find my UIN number anywhere. I don't see it on the acceptance letter as the portal website says I should.

I was accepted in December and haven't gotten any finaid email...

It was written at the top of the email they sent

I got it after submitting the FAFSA a few weeks ago. Have you done yours yet? If not that may explain why you don't have yours.

Did anyone get a financial aid package that was not all loans?

Sorry, I haven't been on SDN since yesterday! I heard that from Dr. Girotti. I was in the area and ran into him, and he told me that the last interview day would be tomorrow, and the committee meeting next week.

Does anyone know if the second look day is mandatory for matriculants to attend? I decided to attend UIC, however I won't be able to make it to the second look day..... Thanks!!

Hello guys!

I'm a long time lurker on this thread. I saw this and had to comment. This post is inaccurate. I know because I am scheduled to interview on 3/25. When I scheduled my interview they had 16 spots for 3/25 and 16 spots on 3/30 and that was on the Chicago campus. 3/30 was the last day I could see, but I am not sure that is the last day for interviews or if the other campuses are still conducting interviews.

I'm really glad to hear that!! I'm not sure why he told me this Friday was the last day (I promise this was what was actually communicated to me - I wanted to add an official word since the process timelines are too hazy as is) but I'm happy to know that it is not the case regardless. Best of luck with your interview!! 🙂

I could see a Thursday meeting post 3/25, but 3/30 wouldn't make sense unless they pushed the committee review to 3/31 or later? Since it was still indicated that the committee meeting would be next week. I don't think they interview for waitlist either. Hm. Unless they're doing a meeting just for 3/25 and 3/30? haha xD Oh well, no need to add to speculation. So much for more clarity. Sorry again!

We were told that the March interviewees would have some sort of decision by the end of the month. Maybe they meet again in April for the April interviewees? Either way, as I mentioned before, it's hard to make any definitive statements about the whole process as an applicant/non-committee member. Apparently, even the committee members aren't entirely sure from week to week. Some factors are unpredictable...for instance, people withdraw acceptances.
