2014-2015 University of Massachusetts Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So... has anyone applying MSTP received an invite to the MD/PhD Program Research Retreat? Still no acceptance, but this showed up in the email. Have all MSTP applicants gotten it?

Just called the office and they said that decisions are rolling out and everyone will get a response by April 30th. They pushed it farther back from an initial deadline of Mid-March. Hope this helps for those of us anxiously waiting!

I swear that I'm going to end up institutionalized by the time this process is over...

So has anyone who interviewed on February 12th actually received an email indicating that they were accepted? I know one guy says his portal says so, but how about an official announcement?
I posted about the portal change, and got the official email about 20 minutes later, so I guess the answer is yes.

So there are 76 members on FB group minus couple current students and other not join = how many acceptances remaining?

Waitlist if class is full? Do they rank or tier their waitlists? Any ideas...

i am not sure if they rank their waitlists... does anybody have any insight on this?

they did indicate in the waitlist letter that right now their class is full. but like someone said above, i believe this means they can only have 125 acceptances out at one time.... so as soon as someone in the class already gets into another school and says no to umass they will give out another acceptance. remaining hopeful because I love this school!

So be ready to wait at least another month...

waitlisted today, received an email around noon time. interviewed feb 18th.
Congrats, how exciting! As I'm sure you've already read, there is a lot of wait list movement at UMass, so my guess is you have a good chance! It's so hard to predict when and how they are going to communicate. For a while I thought they only sent out notices on Fridays, but you got the email yesterday, correct?

From the looks of this, I'm pretty sure this is a troll wanting to stir up some anxiety. Unless an SDN member with a reputable history on SDN can verify that they too have received a decision email yesterday, we should all take this information with a grain of salt. Remember, all other decision correspondences were made on friday. Why is this single one out of the ordinary? Furthermore the Facebook group has 77 people including about 15 current students. RELAX people, there are plenty of spots left. Don't let one bad apple ruin the entire harvest. 🙂

sorry to burst your bubble but also got waitlisted around noon on the same day. interviewed 10/23

"The Committee on Admissions has reviewed your application, and has been impressed by your academic and personal qualifications for the study of medicine. Unfortunately, at this time all of the places in the class entering August, 2015, have been filled. However, I am pleased to offer you a place on our wait listfor the class entering the University of Massachusetts Medical School in August, 2015. Those on the list may be considered for acceptance at any time between now and August if a place in the class should develop."

Past years have acceptances and waitlists going out throughout the week, not just Fridays.

yeah I thought the same for a while, but yeah I got it on Monday which was a shock. maybe because of the match day ceremony they had friday someone mentioned above.

Im just saying, take everything with a grain of salt. People who have joined today and yesterday (including myself) cannot be taken too seriously. Look at the cold hard facts people. Some of us are going to be doctors and based off the evidence of people just joining and posting who do not have any other history on SDN is sort of sketchy IMO. There are many people in this thread who have demonstrated seniority for a few months now and I will believe the class is full once one of these people confirms a wait list. Although one may think we live in a perfect society, we do not. Med school applicant as well as students are known to pull fast ones because they are so worried about stuff. Very few times do people actually wish you well and actually mean it. Based off the evidence here, I really cannot believe that any correspondence regarding decision has gone out since March 13. People who are worried that the class is filled and there is no shot, RELAX and look at the evidence I pointed out, then decide to freak out.

Got an acceptance email today. After getting rejection letters from BU and Buffalo and reading that UMass had sent out all the acceptance letters already, this was pleasantly unexpected. Keep the hope alive my friends. I loved UMass when I interviewed and it was also my first choice. I wish the best of luck to everyone, I hope to see you in August! I'm going to celebrate with a Beef Wellington now. :heckyeah:

in other news, UMass is anticipating an 8K fee increase 🙁

Spare us the followup posts and tell us when you interviewed!

I have a new publication. Should I send an update/letter of intent now, or wait until I am wait-listed. Of course I could be outright rejected...

Long time lurker; finally joining the party because UMASS is killing me with this wait. Interviewed in Oct.

Can confirm that (some) October acceptances already went out even though none have posted to SDN. Sorry to bring it up so bluntly, but figured people were antsy to know.

Another Oct here, so I feel your pain! Rather just know if it's a rejection/waitlist than absolute silence for nearly 6 MONTHS

@StayCoolIceCube Figured as much, feel like I'm waiting on a waitlist email or rejection :/
My guess about the way their admissions office works is that they already have 125 "acceptances" out at the moment. Anyone who hasn't heard anything to this point shouldn't necessarily feel disheartened IMO. Once those accepted begin to commit to other schools, they will be sending out more. Maybe they don't want to commit to having so many spots on their wait list, or they are taking their time and making sure they only have 125 "acceptances" out at once.

All I hear about is how much of a bargain UMass is...

An updated Class of 2019 Cost of Attendance:
http://www.umassmed.edu/financialaid/currentstudents/tuition-and-fees-new-students/

$65,367

Also: "Tuition and fees may be changed at any time without prior notice."

lol?

It's considered a "bargain" because other private schools' tuitions start at $50k (depending on the school). That, plus cost of living, will drive up the actual Cost of Attendance well beyond $60k at other schools.

The thing that bugs me is that they boast about how low their tuition is... but their fees are almost 3x that amount, which makes tuition + fees = $30,000+. I thought that was really deceptive.

this might be a stupid question, but for the financial aid application, there is a section that asks for a "brief biography outlining your accomplishments. This information may be used in the Annual Scholarship Dinner Program." because it's going to be used at an event, I was wondering if this should be in first or third person?

Yeah, tuition and fees together is a more reasonable number to compare.

Fees at other schools I was looking at were paltry compared to umass.

Lol accepted my waitlist spot last night. I'm traveling and totally forgot since I have spotty internet access.

Can the people who got WL on Friday comment on when they interviewed? Anyone whose been accepted/WL interview on March 10th? Thanks!
