2014-2015 University of Massachusetts Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anybody have a good idea of the number of acceptances granted so far? AMCAS regulates that schools accept at least their full class size by March 15 (see bullet #4 in the link. https://www.aamc.org/students/apply...afficrulesforadmissionofficers-2015amcas.html

The Class of 2019 facebook page has 68 members, but it's hard to tell how many of those are current med students. I'm amazed at how quite this thread has been this year...I hope some of us hear good news in the next couple of days!

I can't comment on how many students have been accepted, but for all of you who are worried about how quiet the thread is, you just have to remember that UMASS has approximately 1/10th of the applicants of other schools (since it's only in-state). It's pretty logical that there would be considerably less posting in this thread than others and, as is, only a very small subset of applicants post on SDN. Unfortunately, that makes it really difficult to get a good idea of acceptances from this thread compared to other schools.

With that being said, it's just now becoming Spring (yay) and the action will be happening soon.

According to the UMass Med Class of 2019 group on Facebook, they're at 6o+ students. :/

Assuming that there is a group of current students in the group as well, I see this as a good thing-- that's less than half of the class meaning lots of acceptances to go around! Fingers crossed for a big batch of good news tomorrow!!!

Are Thursdays a day they meet?

In past threads and in the few in this thread, decisions have been released on Fridays. But I don't know if thats a fact, just an observation!

I've heard people state this as fact. They announce decisions on Fridays.

The two students I know who have been accepted already have not joined this FB group. I personally wouldn't take it to be a good representative estimate of # of acceptances so far.

oh umass please give us a decision soon! pretty please 🙂 it's almost mid-march

Is this happening? If so, would that mean an increase in tuition to be more in line with other state schools?

Tuition might not be in line with other state schools, but fees are absolutely outrageous at UMass such that the overall cost of attendance ends up being about the same

Welcome to the hell that is applying to UMass. When I applied years ago, I interviewed in October and did not hear anything until a rejection on like April 29th.

WORST ADMISSIONS STAFF IN THE COUNTRY. PERIOD.

Hi guys! I was in the same boat as everyone waiting for a decision through email (interviewed February 12). I didn't receive an email but I decided to check the student portal today and my status had changed from complete to accepted. For all those waiting, try checking the portal.

Hey Everyone,

I would check your email - just got accepted (although for MSTP, so might not apply for everyone...).

This will probably be a resounding "no," but worth a shot....has anyone that interviewed on March 10th heard anything?

I interviewed on March 5th and just got accepted today. Utterly shocked! First (and probably only) acceptance!

Also, I'd called yesterday and they said by March 31, everyone will hear from them. Moreover, I don't know if this made a difference, but I sent a letter of intent and updates yesterday as well.

Interviewed March 10 too, still waiting! The guy running the MMI circuit said they were supposed to meet next week, I know there was a meeting this week but I assume March 10 interviewees were not discussed!

Is it just me or is UMASS severely suffering from serial position effect?? There have been more acceptances from people applying late in the cycle and almost all current med students chiming in interviewed late in the cycle as well. Us interviewees from the fall seem to be getting passed over

Good luck! Hopefully you'll get great news soon!

If I've already sent a letter of interest, do you suppose there is any point in a letter of intent (post-interview)? UMass is my top choice! What about voicing one's intent via a phone call...is that awkwardly aggressive haha?

I would say a letter of intent couldn't hurt, if it truly is your top choice. I made it clear in my letter that I would withdraw all current applications if accepted, and I also showed that I knew a lot about the school, stating specifically what kinds of programs/activities I'd get involved in upon arrival. I probably wouldn't call because they print out your letter and add it to your app.

Thanks! And congrats on your acceptance! The thing is I also wrote a lot about the specific programs I found impressive and exciting there in my letter of interest, so I feel like a letter of intent would be mostly repetitive with exception of me point blank stating I would withdraw all current applications...

Congrats on getting in! I was wondering the same thing. I interviewed march 5. I sent them a letter of interest prior to getting my interview and a thank you note, thanking the committee. Is it overkill to send them another? I havnt done anything remarkable in the last week to "update" them. UMASS is my top choice, but I have to plan a big move to a different state for another school if I dont get in. :nailbiting: yikes!

Wow that's amazing! Congrats! I also interviewed the 5th. Was planning on sending a letter of intent if I got waitlisted, but now I'm not sure what to do! I would definitely withdraw my other acceptances if I got into UMMS.

I interviewed last year in the fall and got rejected later in the spring. This year I was complete the first week of July and got an interview in March.

Anyone hear UMMS is going to start accepting out of state students?

The dean recently announced a tentative plan to admit 25 out of state students per year, hoping to starting with 12 students for the entering class of 2016 and then the full 25 for 2017. The thinking is that these students would pay higher OOS tuition rates to bring some extra revenue to the school, since finances are tight state-wide. This would need to be approved by the UMMS board (and probably the state as well, since this isn't really in line with the school's mission), plus there are a lot of logistical details to work out (like where to find additional clerkship sites in the already overcrowded New England area), so nothing is close to official yet.

are these OOS students going to be in addition to the current class size or in place of current in state students?

From what it sounds, IS will always be 125 (plus MD/PhD). And overall, despite the fee increase, UMass is an incredible deal compared to 95% of schools. The school's decision to make this increase was brought to students in, what i believe to be, a very transparent manner.

Yup, in addition to the current class size, which is why there are issues finding additional anatomy lab space, advisers, clerkship sites, etc. for 25 more students.

Ah, I thought this was as part of the class size not in addition. I could see that happening if they figured out space etc. It would definitely generate money on the admissions side as well as annoying as that is...

Thank you! If you've already done that, maybe it wouldn't hurt to just send a shorter notice stating your intent, then? I honestly have no more information than you and can only speak to my own experience, but I did state point blank that I would withdraw. It seems like a small committee so maybe every communication counts (but avoid overdoing it, of course). Feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions you don't want to ask here. I'm happy to at least try to help.

Good luck, everyone!

"4. By March 15 of the matriculation year, issue a number of acceptance offers at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and report those acceptance actions to AMCAS."

https://www.aamc.org/students/apply...afficrulesforadmissionofficers-2015amcas.html

I assume at least 125 acceptances have been offered by today.
So the question then becomes: How many acceptances do they end up sending in order to get 125 matriculating students??

So has anyone who interviewed on February 12th actually received an email indicating that they were accepted? I know one guy says his portal says so, but how about an official announcement?

Mind if I ask why you are interested? You don't seem to have any skin in the game. Are you asking for a friend or something?
